Passed away suddenly at the Health Sciences Centre, Jean Goudie, aged 80 years. Predeceased by her husband, Herb, a little over 6 months ago. Also predeceased by her sister Hope, and her parents, Robert and Dorothy Caines. Leaving to mourn is her daughter, Dawn Power and her grandson, Griffin. Also leaving to mourn are her 6 step children and their families: Ken(Marion), Lee(Linda), Ian, Scott(Annette), Steve(Anne), and Nina. Special mention to her cousin, Anne Phelan-May, who she loved like a sister.

Mom was a “townie” who grew up in the East end of St, John’s beginning on Cavell Avenue, moving to York Street, and then Duckworth Street where her family owned and operated Robert Caines Grocery for many years. Mom was also a proud graduate of Bishop Spencer College and was delighted to keep in touch with her classmates on a regular basis.

Mom loved the Evening Telegram’s Jumble and Crossword puzzle and took pride in completing them regularly. She was also a true animal lover and was the concierge of many cats, dogs, and budgies throughout her lifetime. There was nothing better to Mom than watching all the different types of birds that visited her bird feeders daily.

Many thanks to her kind neighbours on Park Avenue in Mount Pearl for the past 50 years who looked out for Mom, especially during the last few months. Thanks as well to the staff at Littledale where Mom spent the last four days of her life for their kind and attentive care. Finally, a heartfelt and special thanks to Nina and Anne Porter for being the “boots on the ground” and for their loving support and compassion shown to Mom, especially in her final hours.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, January 29th from 2:00pm – 4:00pm and from 7:00pm – 9:00pm.

To Ken, Marion and family

I’m so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Dawn and family, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom. Jean and I were cousins, and I have many fond memories of her. I used to spend time at her house when she lived on Duckworth St. We used to cross the yard from York St and crawl in through the kitchen window. My father, Gordon Caines, thought the world of her. She and Herb were a wonderful couple. Last time I saw them both was back in 2015, and it was a very nice visit. The picture you have placed on her obituary page is quite lovely and is exactly how I remember her. I am sending you my deepest sympathy and keeping you and her in my prayers.

Dawn, Griffin & family. My heartfelt condolences on the sudden passing of my dear friend, Jean. I had a long chat with her on Thursday night and she said Dawn had left to return to Calgary. I loved our visits before COVID and Herb passing, and will certainly miss her no nonsense,, attitude and hilarious sense of humour. Together, we tried to keep in touch with other members of the class of 1959 which is now, sadly, less one more member.

To Dawn, Griffin, and Uncle Herbs Family,
Sincere condolences on the passing of Aunt Jean. My Thoughts and prayers are with you all.
