Jeremy James Citrome
October 5, 1972 to September 12, 2026
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Jeremy Citrome. Beloved husband of Jillian Gould. Cherished son of George and the late Elaine. Loving father of Sally and Max. Dear brother of Ted. Jeremy was born and raised in Ottawa, and will be deeply missed by his close circle of friends from there. He and Jillian moved to St. John’s in 2007 to begin their careers at Memorial University, and have built a wonderful community: incredible friends, amazing neighbours, as well as caring students and colleagues from his 18 years of teaching. Along with his family and cats, his love ran deep for his friends, music, coffee, and the gym. Jeremy was a trained medievalist, but his expertise extended far beyond his academic specialties—he had an encyclopedic knowledge of 1980s wrestling, the Simpsons, and horror films. He also was a gentle soul with remarkable strength and joie de vivre. His voice commanded the attention of any room, he took great joy in jamming with his band, and he cherished quiet café afternoons with a book, sometimes alone, often with Sally or Max in tow. Jeremy, we are heartbroken, and our world will never be the same without you.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at 11am at the Beth-El Synagogue (124 Elizabeth Ave.) followed immediately by the interment at the St. John’s Jewish Cemetery (76 Blackmarsh Road). Shiva visits at the Gould-Citrome home begin Tuesday afternoon following the interment and continue at the times listed below (contact Kelley Totten at ktotten@mun.ca for details if needed).

My condolences to Jeremy’s wife Jillian and kids, Sally and Max. He was a special guy with goofy side and gentle nature. I will cherish my memories of his friendship. I’m going to miss knowing that he was around. I mean, Jeremy threw my baby shower 32 years ago. What a guy! Rest in peace, Jer-Bear
This is terrible news. Jeremy was a. lovely soul. I’ll never forget his kind heart and goofy humor. I had the priveldge of knowing him as a good friend and roommate in Ottawa and we kept in touch occasionally all these years. My deepest condolences to his family for this great loss. He will be sorely. missed.
Jeremy taught with us at UBCO for a few years. During that time, he was a delightful raconteur, a terrifically funny guy. Many of us felt it was a loss to Kelowna when we could not hire him permanently.. I was happy he made such a great life in Newfoundland and shocked to hear of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family.
Dear Jillian, children and the Gould/Citrome Family:

I’m so saddened to hear of Dr. Citrome’s passing. He taught me during my first year at MUN, and I always loved going to his class. He had a captivating way of lecturing that was unique and always engrossing. One of the novels he taught in that class went on to become one of my favourites, and he also taught me a few things about writing that I still use on a regular basis. I’m very fortunate to have learned from him, and I can’t imagine I’m the only one who feels that way. May his memory be a blessing to his family and all who loved him.
Jillian, Sally and Max
Sending you all the love in the universe as you process this deep grief. I am so so sorry. I have such good memories of Jeremy. He was so loved ❤️
Sharing my sincerest condolences to the loves, family and life-long friends of Jeremy. Countless hours spent in coffeehouses during our uni years over long philosophical chats and laughs, dinner parties and adventures — Jer was a bright spirit, hilarious guy, and thoughtful gent. A wonderful friend to me, I was just sharing photos months ago with him, dug up from those days … will miss the chance to connect again with his human or virtual form, but wishing for his spirit to comfort his closest, while we share in the great memories of a terrific guy. Blessings xx
Jill, I’m so sorry for your loss. Wishing your family peace and love during this difficult time.

To Jeremy’s family and loved ones, my sincerest condolences. I did not know Jeremy well, but I was fortunate to learn from him at the English dept at MUN many years ago. His enthusiasm was contagious and I still remember how he was able to bring pages of old texts to life. I hope your memories and the knowledge that Jeremy was able to connect with so many people brings some comfort at this difficult time.

Our families’ paths crossed when our children were born. I talked to Jeremy many times at Mother Goose sessions, while waiting to pick up children from activities, at mutual friends’ homes. He was so genuinely kind, open, and positive – and that is how I will always remember him. Sending you all my love.
Jillian, Sally and Max. I am so sorry to hear about Jeremy’s passing. Reading about all the love felt by so many…May his memory be a blessing at this time and always. Sending all my love to you and your family.

I didn’t know Jeremy well — I didn’t think it was appropriate to come to the service — but Jeremy always stood out to me.
In a sea of larger than life academic egos — Jeremy was disarmingly humble, and I always admired and respected that — it’s exceedingly rare. He shone with equanimity and youthful joy — there’s a reason students really connected with him.
I believe in reaching out to people to express gratitude, respect and care — regardless of how well you know them — precisely because I’m very aware that you might not have the chance tomorrow. The sorrow I feel is partly for failing him this way, and partly for our collective loss — our troubled world has lost a source of light, hope and inspiration. Someone who quietly made waves simply by being himself.
My heart holds nothing but love for his family — but not a hint of pity. I trust that because Jeremy was so deeply a part of your life, that you will carry the pain with courage, grace and dignity.
Let us be kind to each other.
Shalom
I had Jeremy for one of my first year English courses at MUN. He was one of, if not the best professors I’ve ever had. He was brilliant, kind, funny, and his lectures were so engaging. He always seemed so enthusiastic and passionate about what he taught. He still inspires me to this day and will continue to throughout my life and academic career. I’m sure he was just as amazing outside of the classroom. Rest easy Jeremy, I’ll always miss you, we all will. <3
I spent every summer with Jeremy when we were kids at summer camp. I remember him as a sweet boy who always showed a real tenderness towards others. I am heartbroken to hear the news of his passing. I am so sorry for your family’s loss. I get the sense from the other condolences I read, his presence will live on in so many of the lives he touched and improved. It’s clear that he’s truly left his mark. With these condolences as evidence, I am reminded of the quote: it’s not the years in your life but rather the life on your years. Sending warmth and love.
Dr. Citrome was a passionate and thoughtful professor. His positivity and kindness in the classroom made a lasting impression on me. My heart goes out to his family as they grieve his loss.
It is deeply shocking and sad to hear of Dr. Citrome’s passing, my heart goes out to his family and my deepest condolences. I had the pleasure of being Jeremy’s student several times over the 4 years of my degree and the passion with which he taught is something I still fondly look back on. The interesting discussions and topics really left a mark on me and I will cherish them for being the reason for my interest in Medieval Studies. I thank him for the mark he left in my life and I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers.
Jillian,
We are so sorry to hear about Jeremy. Jeremy was one of a kind – genuine and always so fun and interesting to be around. We’re holding you, Sally and Max in our thoughts.

My deepest condolences to you and your family, Jillian. Sending much love your way at this difficult time.
My sincerest condolences to Jillian, Sally, Max, and family for your loss. I have been very fortunate to count Jeremy as a close friend since the day we met during our first year in undergrad at Ottawa U. Jeremy was a rare gem of a human being: kind, genuine, smart, and incredibly funny. I will miss him dearly and will cherish the memories of the great times we had over decades of friendship – from the endless discussions in Café Alt, to sharing notes on heading off to grad school and starting academic careers, and more recently catching up in St. John’s with our families as though time hadn’t passed.
Thank you, Jer, for the laughs and the friendship.
I had the pleasure of having Jeremy as my Professor and no one has come close to making a class so meaningful and inspiring as him. You could tell he was passionate about what he spoke about, and he made me love my major in ways no one else could. I grieve for the students that won’t be able to experience his radiance. The English Department lost an irreplaceable gem today.
Hi Jillian. Marci, Joel, Lisa, David, and I are thinking of you and your family. Each time we visited, we were so impressed by the warmth and kindness of Jeremy, your family, and your friends. We will always treasure those memories.
Jillian,
Many years ago, I used to be a server at a restaurant you and your husband frequented. The two of you became some of my favorite patrons. I remember Jeremy as being very sweet and jubilant.
May his memory be a blessing to all. <3
Jillian, I was so sad to hear of Jeremy’s illness recently, and even more so now to learn of his passing. I only met him once, but he exuded warmth and just seemed so kind and lovable. Just like you. Professor Citrome was my favourite teacher I ever had. I cannot express how much he taught me and how thrilling it was to be in his classroom. I am so saddened to hear this news. My deepest condolences.
Gillian and family. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Jeremy was such a kind-hearted person with always a smile on his face. Even though I haven’t seen him in so long, I can still hear his voice and especially his laugh. My heart goes out to you all. Jeremy will always live on in your hearts, memories and his children. Sending you so much love right now during this devastating time.

I’ve known Jeremy since Grade 9. It’s hard to explain to people what his loss means to people who didn’t know him. Jeremy made life interesting for the rest of us. Wasting time with him was never time wasted. I always learned something, I always laughed, and I sometimes got a bit irritated, but in the best kind of way — he loved a good debate and never let different opinions get in the way of steadfast, unwavering friendship. I had the honour of visiting Jer at home with Jill, Sally, and Max, and for a man who didn’t speak too often about his emotions, he let the “I love yous” fly several times a day with his beautiful family, and I gained new determination to say it more to my own family. There will never, never be another Jer, and I am so grateful that he decided to try learn how to play the violin, leading him to sit next to me in Grade 9 orchestra class. I’ll miss him terribly. I love you, Jer.
