It is with gratitude and joy that we celebrate the life of Joan Dawson (Davis, née McDonald), mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who passed away peacefully at the age of 89, on 29 December 2021 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s, following a brief illness. She is survived by her children Bette (Chris), Bill (Donna), Robert (Sue), Rhonda (Gord) and Donna (Rob); grandchildren Stephanie (Rich), Katie (Jeff), Matthew (Victoria), Billy (Melanie), Sarah (Keith), Jennifer (Doug), Kayla (Will), Kristopher (Brooklyn), Adriana (Giorgi), Margaret and Katherine; and great-grandchildren Reeghan, Rose, Khloe, Harrison, Brayden, William and Hartlen. Joan is mourned by her brother Patrick McDonald and his family as well as the families of her siblings who have gone before her: Mary Webber, Helen Pittman, Bill McDonald and Marie Fuller.

Joan was active. She enjoyed 30 years as a volunteer for VOWR’s 50 Plus: The Radio Show, working especially closely with Madeline Thomson, Bill Dyke, John Shortall and Paul Ledrew. She formed lasting friendships at weekly gatherings of the Friday night dart league and over many games of 45s, but none rivalled in length her friendship with schoolmate Mary Collins, who will miss her as much as any of us. Joan was a woman of great faith. She hardly ever missed Mass and, in recent years, her good friends Kay and Bob Conway ensured she got there.

Due to pandemic restrictions, we will postpone her funeral Mass and interment until the summer months of 2022, when we hope to gather in greater numbers to celebrate her life. Anyone who would like to join us for that celebration should email Joan’s daughter, Donna, at JoanDawsonCelebrationofLife@gmail.com to be advised of those plans. Many thanks to the family, friends, hospital staff and neighbours who blessed her life and cared for her to the end. May she rest at peace in her eternal home.

The family will be having visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road  from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday August 11th.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 12th, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. from the Basilica. Interment to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Those who wish to make a donation in Joan’s honour may contact VOWR Radio at http://www.vowr.org/donations.html.

For almost 30 years your mom and I exchanged Christmas cards! I met your mom while I worked at MUN years ago! When I left Newfoundland she made me promise to stay in touch and we did! Through my marriage, the births of my kids, my divorce, I would let her know annually what was going on with me! She was an amazing woman of great strength, and gentle heart! I loved her dearly and after almost 30 years of exchanging our Christmas cards , my heart is heavy but I am forever grateful for her friendship.

We were very sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom, such a kind and loving person. We have many memories of growing up in Rabbittown (Avalon Street). She always had a smile on her face and was a pleasure to have a chat with. Please except our deepest sympathies. Heaven has gained another angle. She may be gone but she will live forever in our hearts and the memories that we all share. Thoughts and Prayers to all.

Very sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. I met Joan for the first time back in 2009 and again on a couple of trips home between then and 2015.

Joan was a joy to speak with … a wonderful soul. May she rest in peace with the angels in heaven.

God bless.
