Joan Maurine Peckham R.N.

February 6, 1932 to January 23, 2025

Obituary

Passed peacefully away at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence on January 23rd, 2025, Joan Maurine Peckham age 92.

Predeceased by her husband, Dr. Gerald (Bud) Peckham.

Leaving to celebrate her life are her five children, Debbie [John Courtenay], her twin sons Gerry [June] and Gary [Charlene], Cindy [Howard Crooks] and Greg [April]; grandchildren, Brad [Heidi], Terri [Mike], Jordan [Kathryn] Curtis [Ayla], Sydney [Josh], Becki [Chris], Jessica [Kirk], Stephen [Kayleigh], Melissa [Alex] and Christine; great grandchildren; Rileigh, Aryanna, Jackson, George, Hayley, Samuel, Tyler, Nate, Wynter, Rogan.

Joan was born February 6th, 1932 to Ethel [Pike] and Charles Hillier on a very snowy, stormy night in Grand Falls, NL where the doctor arrived on a horse and sleigh to attend the delivery. She was a little sister for her two older brothers, Silas and Roy Hillier. Joan grew up in Grand Falls and had many fond childhood memories. At the age of 18 she took the train to St. John’s, where she attended and graduated from the Grace Hospital School of Nursing three years later. During her training she met the love of her life and future husband, Dr. Gerald “Bud” Peckham who she affectionately referred to as Buddy. Bud graduated from Dalhousie University Medical School and returned to St. John’s, NL, where he worked as a Cardiologist. They lived and raised their five children in St. John’s and enjoyed many years spending time in their summer home on Mitchell’s Pond in St. Philip’s.

On behalf of Joan and her family we would like to thank Dr. Sharon Ripley, Joan’s physician for many years and a dear family friend.

A huge thank you to all the staff at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence, where Joan resided for ten years, for their exemplary care and compassion.

A special thank you to physiotherapist and friend Holly Harpur (her singing buddy) who was a tremendous force in Joan’s rehab and care.

Joan made many close friends at Kenny’s Pond, both residents and staff, who she cherished dearly.

Joan was loved by all and was known for her infectious smile and sense of humor – a friend to all. She will be missed terribly by her family and everyone who knew her.

At Joan’s request, cremation has taken place at Carnell’s Funeral Home in St. John’s. A private wake and funeral service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.

So sorry to hear of Aunt Joan’s passing. I always enjoyed visiting Uncle Bud and Aunt Joan at Christmas time. I fondly remember many Christmas Eves and all the family gathering at our home on Downing street. I always enjoyed visiting their home in town and out in St. Philips.
