Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Strickland, aged 87, on December 17th. Joan was born on May 21, 1937, in St. John’s to Arthur and Mildred Taylor.
Joan was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, and proud community member. She was an active member of Wesley United Church, Women’s Institute, and UCW, and volunteered with VOWR. She was compassionate, intelligent, discerning, and the best host this side of Newfoundland.
Joan is survived by her children Mona and Christopher (and his wife Brenda Dillon), her grandchild John (and his wife Katie Aitken), and by many extended family members and friends who cherished her dearly. She was preceded in death by Cyril Perry and Cecil Strickland.
Her kindness, strength, and warmth will live on in the hearts of all who knew her and beyond.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on December 27th at 11am at Wesley United Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity or organization of one’s choice.

I was so saddened to hear that Joan had passed away. She was such a lovely person and always so nice to me. I will miss her so much.
May her wonderful soul fly to heaven and for her to be flying with the other angels up there.

Sorry I was unable to attend service today but I had a medical appointment at the exact same time. Your mom was such a caring and kind person. Her many acts of kindness quietly done may never be known. When I was sick last year her many gifts of delicious homemade food was so appreciated. She was a really kind generous person. I am deeply saddened to learn of John’s passing. I met Joan through my volunteer work at VOWR. I was greatly impressed by her kindness and her welcoming disposition. It was always a pleasure to encounter Joan, she made you feel special and her gracious personality was a joy to embrace. Joan was a lovely lady. When I moved to St. John’s she was the first person to greet me at Church and make me welcome. We had so much fun together at UCW. We grew close sharing stories about our lives. I will miss our weekly conversations. My condolences to her family who she dearly loved.
Our deepest condolences to you, Mona, Christoper and family. My sisters and I had a very good visit with Joan when we brought our mother’s ashes back to St John’s for burial. She was the best hostess we could have ever asked for!
I can see her now in the loving arms of my mother and “Uncle Bud”.

Dear Mona, Christopher, and family so sorry to hear about Joans death. She was so important to mum from their childhood escapades to adult life. I know mum phoned her often and visited Canada to see Joan when she could. It was unfortunate that we were not able to visit Newfoundland in September this year. It was so amazing that through all her health issues she remained in close contact always concerned about others. My thought and prayers are with you all., love Lynda
So very sorry to hear of Joan’s passing. She was a lovely lady who worked tirelessly (along with her UCW friends) at Wesley Church. Joan always made time for a quick chat anytime we bumped into her at the supermarket or at Church. She will be missed. We offer our sincere sympathy to you all.
So very shocked and saddened to learn of Joan’s passing. She was a beautiful person and I am happy I got to know her.. She had been a friend of my Husband’s family for many years, however, I met her when I joined WI. So sorry yo hear of Joan’s death. She was a valued member of the Templeton Women’s Institute for many years and contributed to the group in so many ways.
I particularly liked her sense of humor and her calming influence.

At a drop of a hat she was there to help. All the food that was prepared with love and served at the church all by the ladies of the UCW and church volunteers was endless.
