It is with heavy hearts that we announced the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother in law, uncle and friend on January 18, 2026, at the Health Science Centre. Surrounded by his loving family and friends.
John was born and grew up on Fishot Island on the Great Northern Peninsula where he started his career as a boat builder. He built one of the first long liner on the Northern Peninsula.
He later moved to St. John’s to start his career as a carpenter/home builder.
Making St. John’s his home, he met and married his beloved Pauline (nee McDonald). Together they built a loving home and raised four beautiful sons, Jonathan, Stephen, Jason and David who were his pride and joy! Their home was a place where family and friends were always welcome!
As a master carpenter/home builder. He took great pride in every project he created. He left his mark on many great homes he built in and around the St. John’s area.
John will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman who greatly enjoyed moose hunting with David, Larry, Francis and his boys! There were many great stories shared with the family about those adventures.
Trap shooting was a favorite pastime of his and he was an active member of the St. John’s Rod and Gun Club for many years.
John’s greatest loves were his sons and he took every opportunity to spend as much time with them as possible teaching them many great life lessons.
John’s warm smile, gentle humor and kind personality made him a great friend and easy to be around he will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John leaves to mourn his beloved wife Pauline; sons, Jonathan, Stephen (Wendy), Jason (Joe-ann) and David (Laura); his two beautiful granddaughters, Vivian and Evelyn; daughter in law Amy; brother Francis; sisters Josephine (Dorm) and Marie (William); sisters in law Kathleen (George) Anne, Ruby (David), Alice (Paul) and Ellen.
John was predeceased by his infant daughter Alice, his parents, Edward and Alice Aylward. His brother Edward, sisters Kathleen, Theresa and Gertrude. Sister in law Bernadette Aylward. As well as other sister and brother in laws. He leaves a large circle of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses of 4 North A at the Health Science Centre for their kindness, compassion, and support that you showed our dad and family, it will never be forgotten.
Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, January 22nd from 1 – 4 PM & 6 – 9 PM and on Friday, January 23rd, from 1 – 4 PM & 6 – 9 PM.
Funeral mass to be held at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, 120 Mundy Pond Road, on Saturday January 24th at 11 AM.
Following the funeral, family and friends are invited for refreshment at 20 Oxen Pond Road, St. John’s.

Our It is our joy to have John in our lives. Our condolences to all of the Aylward family near and far. John is and will always be a wonderful, thoughtful, loving and honest man, husband, father, brother, brother-in-law and friend. We will miss seeing him when we come home to St. John’s; however, Pauline, you can expect that we will always continue to visit you. John and Pauline you are a perfect example of a loving family! You are our inspiration. My personal thanks (Dorita) goes to John for being the best carpenter teacher to Ivan. I met and shot with John at the St John’s Rod and Gun Club Istarting in the mid 70’s. Always with a smile, a friendly conversation, a willingness to pitch in when things had to be done and always a gentleman and friend..

We are so sorry and sad to hear of John’s passing.
What a fine gentleman he was , and a true privilege to have known John all these years..
John was such a good carpenter, and through all the wonderful work he did for us, we never had so much as a disagreement.. He was a pleasure to deal with and it was always fun when he brought one of his boys with him.
What a wonderful role model..he was for his family.

Pauline and boys , we are so saddened of John’s passing and know that your memories of him will lessen your loss over time.Meeting him some 35 yrs ago through Philomena and her family ties with the many encounters and conversations with him I alway felt the kindness and humility he had , he always set aside time for these talks ! I know the boys are as proud of him as he was of them, this is the ultimate measure of any man.

I was so very sorry to hear of John’s passing. I remember him well from doing legal work for him while working with the late Frank Fowler. John was one of the sweetest, kindest, easy-going people I’ve had the privilege to work with. He always had a smile.
