Obituary
Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on April 25, after a brief battle with cancer.
Left to mourn are his wife and best friend of 49 years Sally; sons Christopher (Jennifer) and Jason (Geneviève); daughter Vicki (Dion); his pride and joy, granddaughter Lélia and grandsons Evan and Bryden; brother Paul (Sharon); sister-in-law Brenda Fudge (Gary); and a large circle of extended family and friends.
John enjoyed the outdoors and spent many years camping in Newfoundland and on the mainland. After he retired from Fisheries and Oceans he reconnected with old friends and enjoyed many days golfing followed by good company and conversation. He was also known as the chief barbecuer at gatherings and a lifelong automotive enthusiast.
Special thanks to his many friends for their support over the last couple of weeks; your friendship is deeply treasured.

Visitation will take place May 8th at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Freshwater Road from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A private family interment will take place on May 9th at the Anglican Cemetery Kenmount Road.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation in John’s memory to the SPCA , Mazol Shriners or a charity of your choice.

John was my very first supervisor with DFO in 1977. I have never forgotten, not only how welcoming and down-to-earth he was, but also the positive impact John had on my early career. God speed.

Sally I was so sorry to hear of John’s passing. Cool told me of his illness. Another good man gone way too soon!
I have known John for over 60 years and we have had many encounters but one is particularly memorable. I met John and his buddy John Cummings one day at Bally Haly as they were driving to # 1 tee. I said I didn’t know you guys were serious golfers to which John replied “ oh, we’re not – we just hit til we’re happy !”.
What a great outlook on golf and life in general .

I first met John in 1969, when camping at Butter Pot Park. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with many adventures and fun times along the way. Even though my family life brought me away for many years, I always considered John to be one of my dearest friends. He was a true gentleman who was very respectful and kind to everyone. He was soft spoken and at the same time, possessed such a great wit which was very evident in his mischievous grin and twinkling eyes. He was a true friend.
Sally, when you came into John’s life, you completed that friendship in a wonderful way. It was very evident right from the start, you were meant to be his partner in life. You both were and remained, good for and to each other as husband and wife for almost 50 years. It was very evident that you shared a great love and respect for each other. You both raised a wonderful and successful family, whom I know he loved dearly and was very proud of. He was also very proud of each of his grandchildren and beamed as he spoke lovingly of each of them.
I know you will miss him dearly. Hopefully, the wonderful memories you made as a family in all of your travels and adventures, will provide you with great comfort in the difficult days that lay ahead.
Please know that we also will miss him dearly. Always know we are here if and when you need us. We will keep our friendship going. One day our circle will be complete again.
