It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of John Gerald (Gerry) Whalen at the age of 83.
Gerry is predeceased by his father Alfred in 1998 and is survived by his beloved mother Sheila Whalen (Foster). Gerry leaves to mourn his two sons Geoffrey Alfred, Mark (Melanie Ozon, Declan Maunder), his grandson Louis Whalen who was the light of his life, Angela Hickey, Sandra (Green), sister Gail (Jim Herder), many nieces and nephews from both the Whalen and Green families, as well as a large circle of friends and colleagues he made over the years.
Gerald attended Prince of Wales College and was a proud Collegian. Though he favoured hockey and soccer, he was a talented athlete in many activities. Gerry was instrumental in facilitating growth for various clubs, teams and parks dedicated to athletics. Gerry was a devoted Shriner for most of his life and was proud to support their philanthropic work in the community. As a pharmacist, he was known for his kindness, generosity, his sense of humour and going the extra mile for his customers whenever he could. He also enjoyed a period of time as an instructor at a local college where he taught aspects of his profession.
Gerry led a busy life but always loved to stop and talk with old friends and acquaintances and with new people he would meet. It is this quality that many will remember the most.
Special thanks to his home care workers Amma, Victor and Kesina for their care, dedication and kindness.
As per his request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. on Sunday August 3, 2025 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
A private service will be held at at later time.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly suggest a donation in Gerry’s memory to Mazol Shriners Children’s Charities or to a charity of your choice.
