Obituary

It is with heavy and saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, John “Jack” Bishop on Saturday, December 14th, 2019, age 86 years. Dad lived a wonderful life from the streets of Cabot Street where he grew up, his involvement with the St. John’s Caps, raising four children, trips to Vegas, many games of cards and fishing trips, too numerous to mention. Dad loved his time spent in Salmonier Line cutting wood and fishing. He had a tremendous work ethic – delivering milk at the age of 14, then moving on to his 36 year career with Coca-Cola.

Dad is predeceased by his parents, James and Alice; parents in law Dennis and Madeline English; his brothers, Charles, Doug, Dick and Kevin; sister, Margaret and his only son, Johnny; brothers-in-law, Jim Byrne, Tom English, Dennis English Jr, Patrick English and Ronald Quinn; sisters-in-law, Joan Bishop, Doreen English and Joan White; as well as many lifelong friends.

Leaving to mourn his wife Mary, daughters Madonna, Maureen and Jenny (Harry Gulliver), four grandsons; James, Shawn, Chris and Danny, 2 granddaughters; Terri (Dan Stefan) and Kelly (Brian Matthews) and five great grandchildren; Cole, Jack, Luke, Lauren and Jacob; sisters in law, Audrey Bishop, Betty Bishop, Marg Bishop, Dorothy Ryan, Bernadette Dinn, Beth Dreger, Eileen English and Helen English; brothers in law Tony English (Charmaine) and Ronald White; as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews.

Dad also leaves to mourn many special friends including Ed and Gloria Learning, Doug Thistle, Mike Druken, Tony English, Derrick White, Ron Gollop and Bob Martin.

Cremation has taken place. Resting at Carnell’s Visitation and Reception Centre, 1045 Topsail Road, Mt. Pearl, Thursday, December 19th from 12pm – 9pm. Mary. Praying for you and your family. We love you!! Dwayne, Twila and Liam. Xo

Jack called me his adopted daughter. It’s a title i’m proud of. Very fond memories of Salmonier Line and Jack….I can hear him now ” Make sure you fill up the wood and splits for the next person” . He said that mostly to his daughter( my good friend and buddy) Donna. She burned wood like there was no tomorrow!!! Went ice fishing for the first time many years ago with Jack, Ed and Donna..What a time we had. I still think about it quite often. My thoughts are with his family and friends. I’ll always have good memories of him… My deepest sympathy. Cathy Lawlor…

It is with a heavy hart I learned today of my good friend Jack passing
I have so many memories over the years.
I first met Jack as a rookie sales rep for Coca Cola back in the late 70’s, when Jack said I was “ok” everybody else at the plant and on the trucks treated me fine. I was in!
Jack may not have been the big boss but he ran the place, If Jack Bishop said it was ok then it was ok.
He had so much respect from the entire operation because of his knowledge of the business, his character personality and he was a great sport.
He treated everybody with respect, he was a great person to know.
I remember going down to the Stadium with him to check out the “New” line up for the Caps, he’d watch for awhile and give me his rating, and by God he was always right.. If Jack said “It will be a good year for the Caps” it was, and if not, It wasn’t”
Once when camping not to far from his cabin a horrendous rain storm came up he came and found us an insistedd we come to his place for the night, just would not take no for and answer, fed us a nice hot meal too.
After leaving Coca Cola we kept in touch and would get together for a cup of tea and chat and keep up to date on things, when I left St.John’s and moved to Dartmouth, one day, right out of the blue he showed up at my front door!, What a surprise that was, every year when he would come to Halifax to visit the Casino we’d have lunch and catch up, and I would visit home we’d meet at Leo’s for a fish n chips and chat..
We’d speak on the phone every now and again and I so enjoyed those chats, in the last six months I called several times, left a few messages but did not hear back.
To all of Jacks friends and family we all know what a great person, friend and Dad he was!
We’ll all miss you my friend Jack, maybe someday we’ll catch up again for a cup of tea, and I make sure not to “scald the bag”
With respect, sadness and admiration!
Your friend!
Larry

I worked with your dad at Coca Cola for several years as a young man. Working with your dad was a pleasure and we became good friends. I have a cabin off Salmonier Line and every summer I would pay him a visit. This summer there was no one there. I tried to check but there was no one home. at the nearby cabins. I asked the lady in the store nearby and she couldn’t give me any information. I am very sad to hear of his passing but I have a lot of wonderful memories of him.

To the Bishop family we offer our sincere condolences. Shocked & saddened to hear of Jack’s passing. Though our paths have not crossed in many years, I will always remember the great times we had with the St. John’s Caps. Jack was a remarkable & kind person. He treated everyone with respect & certainly went out of his way to make sure every Cap’s player lost some money to him & Ron Quinn in card games through the hockey season. This world is a better place for having Jack in it. RIP my friend.
