It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the passing of John Michael “Jack” Ghaney, surrounded by his fiercely loving circle of family and friends.

Predeceased by his parents, Jack and Rose Ghaney, his brother Keith Ghaney, his mother-in-law, Mildred Furey, and his brother-in-law Robert “Rob” Held.

Left to mourn with hearts full of precious memories are his cherished wife Annette; his beloved daughters Nicole (Nick) and Jacklyn (Allison), who he was immensely proud of each and every day; grandsons Rory and Reilly, who were his pride and joy; his siblings Wayne (Andrea), Lynn (Reg), Cathy (Sean), Lisa (Tony), Barry (Trina), as well as sisters-in-law Sharon and Daphne, and brother-in-law Frankie.

Jack will also be remembered fondly by a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, as well as the many lives he touched along the way, including the friends of Bill W.

The family would like to express our immense gratitude for the staff at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre for their dedicated care during Jack’s health journey, including Dr. Jehan Siddiqui and Jack’s own niece Kelli Collins-Skinner. Additionally, a huge thank-you to all other staff at the Health Sciences Centre who helped to support and care for him along the way.

Jack was extremely enthusiastic about all the simple things life has to offer. He loved fishing, hunting, bird watching and spending time with family and embraced a philosophy of living life in the moment and truly soaking up every minute. Forest Field was Jack’s peaceful getaway, and the cabin he built there was his ultimate passion project that showcased his hard work and dedication. He was a talented musician and a lover of music and animals, a constant nature seeker, and above all, a helper – there was nothing Jack wouldn’t do to help someone in need, a true “Jack” of all trades.

Jack was loved by all who knew him, and impacted countless lives with his advocacy, advice, strength and stellar sense of humor. Most of all, Jack was a family man who adored his wife Annette and his daughters Nicole and Jacklyn. Jack was extremely proud and very thankful to have gotten the chance to meet and hold the newest addition to the family, his newborn grandson Reilly.

Jack will be immensely missed by his large circle of dedicated family and friends. There is nothing we wouldn’t do to have him here with us, to once again see his often funny and at times inspirational Facebook posts, and to hear him sing one more song or two. He will live on forever in our hearts and minds, and will never be forgotten.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday, August 4th from 12:00 to 3:00 pm and 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Service will take place in the Carnell’s chapel on Wednesday, August 5th at 1:00 pm.

While flowers are welcome, the family suggests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the St. John’s SPCA or a charity of your choosing.
