Obituary

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dearly loved father John Richard Walsh, age 88, of St. John’s, after a brief illness on March 03, 2019 with his family by his side. Our dad had a long career as Director of Veterans Affairs Canada in St. John’s, NL. He was a tireless and passionate advocate for veterans and their families and a proud 40 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He worked with the Legion and within Veterans affairs to champion the establishment of the Newfoundland-Labrador Field of Honour at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. He was a self-educated expert on the two great wars and the heroic roles played by Newfoundlanders.

A fiercely independent and proud person, dad was able to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycles well into his eighties. He loved cameras, photography, old movies and was a voracious reader. He loved animals of all kinds and rescued many during his lifetime.

Most of all, dad loved his family and was a loyal and supportive father. He was the go-to person, the problem solver and advisor for his family members, and many others throughout his life.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Walsh; parents, Leo and Josephine Walsh; brothers, Alex and Richard; sisters, Louise and Carmel.  He Leaves to mourn his children, Pamela (Ken), John (Cindy), David (Paulette), Joanne (Tom), Patricia (Jim) and Bernard (Dara); grandchildren, Steven, John, Jennifer, Jillian, David, Stephanie, Casey, Michael, Jason, Zackary, Brendan and Danielle as well as his great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is survived and mourned by his brothers Basil (Margaret), Desmond and Victor, and his sister Thelma. John also leaves to mourn his partner and best friend Mary Moriarity, and her family, and their friends at MUN and the HighGate.

We were sorry to hear of John’s passing. We enjoyed John and Mary’s visits to our home in Virginia Beach and Florida. John was a good story teller and his off colored one liners were guaranteed to invoke a good laugh. John was an excellent photographer and several of his pictures hang in our Florida home.
