Joseph George Squires

Obituary

It is with tremendous sadness and much love that we announce the passing of our brother Joseph (Joe) George Squires.

He is predeceased by parents Florence and Joseph Squires; as well as his birth mother Rita Hogan.

Leaving to mourn sister Joanne Blake (Ken); his brothers Ward Squires (Tina), Glenn Squires (Marion); special cousins Susan Bruff (Kevin), and Barry Power; and his aunt Frances Power. He also leaves to mourn a large circle of very special nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.

Those who knew him will remember a man who devoted his career to teaching adults with special needs, but for him it was never simply a job. He cared deeply about his students and believed in helping them succeed not only in the classroom, but also in life. The difference he made in the lives of his students will always be his greatest legacy.

While Joe never had children of his own, he took immense pride in being an uncle and great uncle. He loved to tease them when they were young and never failed to ask them about their lives as they got older. Family get togethers were one of his favorite things to do. He loved to debate about politics and sports and loved his Toronto Blue Jays.

Joe always lived a simple life. His legacy is not in the things that he possessed, but in the lives, he touched and the kindness that he showed each day. He will be remembered with love and will be missed more than words could ever express. You will always be our “big brother”.

Flowers are kindly accepted as well as a donation to The Vera Perlin Society.

Visitation will be held on Thursday August 6th from 12-8pm, a service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday August 7th at 2:00 pm. There will be an interment at the Anglican Cemetery on Kenmount Road following the service.

Our deepest condolences to all Joe’s family. We knew Joe from years ago when he worked at Jeans & Things with my husband’s sister Yvonne. Joanne and family: We are so sorry to hear of your brother’s passing. Sincere condolences to you all. May he rest in peace.

Our sincere condolences to all of Joe’s family and friends..

Joe, our family was deeply saddened to learn of your passing. Instantly thinking back over the years. About our beginning friendship as students doing the same summer course at MUN. Where many times afterwards, most of the class meandered on over to the Breezway to continue our critical thinking and debates. And though we discovered it wasn’t the best place for studying for that day’s test or producing papers from our impaired thinking, it led to a lot of funny “Hey, you remember when…” Nights on George Street, not wanting to learn how much of a good time we may have had the next day lol. Standing up for me at my wedding. Even years after my children meeting you, they still have referred to you fondly as Uncle Joe. You struck a chord in their hearts, in ours and many many others. You meant a great deal to a great number of people Joe. Your quirky humour, your kind friendly demeanor, your selflessness in devoting your time to others, love of the Jays and Leafs and always up for a chat, you truly left an ever-lasting mark on the people you met.
I’m going to miss you my buddy. Thanks for the years of friendship and the memories with you that bring a smile to my face.
Rest easy Joe Squires.

My deepest condolences to Joe’s family and friends. He was so very well thought of by all. His work was his happy place. God speed Joe. Dodie Crawford

Glen and Marion we know how much Joe meant to you and we feel your sadness as well. Our many conversations with Marion gave us that connection of love you had for each other. Keep your memories close to your heart.

We are so very sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. The obituary about Joe is beautiful and describes him perfectly. Joe is my birthday twin as Joe and I shared the same birthday. I’ve known Joe about 40 years through my husband Peter and Peter’s family. Joe was a part of their family, like a brother. He would bring my mother in law, Mrs. White a potted poinsettia every Christmas for many years. Peter and his siblings have so many stories about growing up with Joe. Lots of good heated discussions over hockey and politics with my father in law too! Fast forward a few years later he taught my niece and nephew at Vera Perlin. They thought the world of him, as many others did too. I worked at the bank where Joe would bring his class into teach them about banking. He was so kind and caring to all of his students. He found his calling in life for sure! My co-workers and I would look forward to every Tuesday for the Metrobus to pull up with their arrival.

Joe was so such a gentle giant, just great guy. He will be missed by many but never forgotten. Myself and Peter extended our sincere condolences to all of his family and many friends. May your wonderful memories of Joe comfort you through the difficult days.

You can now rest easy Joe.

I was saddened to hear of Joe’s passing. My deepest sympathies to his family. I had the privilege of working with Joe at the Vera Perlin Society. He was a great guy. Joe was very passionate when it came to his job and the young men and women with whom he worked. He treated them with the utmost respect, dignity and kindness. They were his extended family. I hope that the loving memories you have of your brother, Joe, will bring you much joy and happiness in the days ahead. RIP Joe!!

Joanne, Ward, Glenn and all the family, please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved brother, Joe. I knew of his work with the mentally challenged as some of my students went on to him at the college. He was well loved and respected. And I often remember hearing how he loved family gatherings and carrying on with his nieces and nephews.
May his soul, and the soul of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Sending love,
Cathy Blake
