Obituary

“Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter silvered wings…”

 J.G. Magee (Jr.)

Joseph Ivan Hodder passed peacefully away on December 23rd, 2022 at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence, St. John’s, NL.

Leaving to mourn with treasured memories and love are his parents, Ivan & Regina Hodder of Buchans NL; son, Robert (Lesley) Hodder and beloved grandson Daniel Hodder all of Moschelle, NS. Siblings; Patricia (Daryl) of Sarnia ON, Wayne (Colleen) of Buchans NL, Joanne of Edmonton AB, Cathy (Wayne) of Paradise NL, Craig (Susan) of Traytown NL, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles

Predeceased by brother Paul, nephew Alexander and niece April.

“Junior” was the eldest son of Ivan and Jean. Born in St. John’s NL, he grew up in Buchans. There he discovered a love of country music and learned to play the guitar. Entertainer, philosopher, poet and musician to friends and family, his natural talent was treasured by those who loved him.

His career started with training in aircraft maintenance. He proceeded to become an aircraft engineer however, his relentless passion was to fly helicopters which he did at whenever opportunity presented itself.

His proudest achievement may have been acquiring a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alberta, a fitting milestone for a lover of history.

On May 22nd, 1993 the world stopped turning.  Though severely injured in the crash of a fixed wing airplane in Villeneuve, AB, he was able to recover his independence.  This was greatly influenced by the support and love of Angie Hunter and her family.

Despite significant obstacles and loss imposed by his injury he carried himself with pride and dignity always.  He never once was seen in a state of self-pity and his attitude was that of gratitude for the remaining life he had been gifted.  He retained his humour, with curiosity and sense of irony long after his injury.  Solace was found in his visits with Willie.

This final year was his most challenging and fraught with setbacks.

Joseph Ivan

Until we meet again fly high and free – we love you

The family expresses sincere thanks to Tania Tilley and the nursing staff of Kenny’s Pond for their kindness and attentive care.

Thank you to all who said prayers, sent blessings or thought of us at this difficult time.
Junior was cremated and requested that there be no service. He requested that his ashes be spread in the Yukon, a place that he travelled, worked, and probably flew helicopters.
Described to Angie as wild and mountainous, maybe it’s where his spirit felt most at ease?

My condolences to the Hodder family on Junior’s passing. We worked together at Red Cross Lake one summer and have great memories of him singing Kris Kristofferson songs and riding his dirt bike.

Back in the 80’s we drove to Alberta from Buchans in his Chevette with his massive toolbox taking up most of the space. We had an unbelievable trip and the laughs flowed freely. It was and still is one of the best times I ever had.
It’s a memory that has always stayed with me, and always will.
The time the cop stopped us in Montana and asked where we were from and Jr said Buchans. The cop asked if Buchans was near Toronto, and jr said “Just down the road “with a straight face was hilarious!! Bet you could hear us laughing inToronto as we drove away!!
Rest easy and in Peace my friend..
Maybe do another trip when we meet again.

Aunt Jean, Uncle Ivan and all the family… so saddened to hear of June’s passing.. Sending all our love and prayers to get you through this difficult time!
Love Always
