Joyce Andrews (née Stevens)

April 24, 1942 to May 7, 2026

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Andrews (née Stevens) at the Palliative Care Unit, Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre, on Thursday May 7, 2026.

Born in North River on April 24, 1942, Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Ida Stevens; her brothers, Charlie (Florie) and Lloyd; and her sister, Mary.

She will be forever remembered by her devoted husband, Ray, with whom she shared 67 wonderful years together, including 64 years of marriage. Also left with loving memories are her daughter Beverley (Robert) and her son Lindsey; her sister-in-law Maud; sisters-in-law Dorothy (Ellsworth) and Frances (Eric); brothers-in-law Roland (Daphne), Ross (Michele), Frazer (Mary), and Vince (Amy); as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Joyce grew up in the close-knit community of North River. In 1959, she met the love of her life, Raymond, from Port de Grave. They were married in North River on August 19, 1961, and together they raised two children, Beverley and Lindsey.

After spending a number of years living on the east coast, Joyce and Ray moved to Grand Falls-Windsor when Ray was transferred for work. Following 10 years in central Newfoundland, they returned to St. John’s in 1979, where they made their home for the past 47 years.

Joyce was deeply involved in numerous groups and organizations over the years, but one of her greatest joys was her work with the “Care and Share” program at Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle. There, she lovingly coordinated meals for those who were ill and organized catering for families following funeral services, offering comfort and care to many.

Joyce had a gift for hospitality. She loved opening her home to family and friends for evenings filled with food, laughter, fellowship, singing, and music, often lasting well into the early morning hours. She also enjoyed her weekly bowling outings, but above all, Joyce cherished her time in the garden. Her love for flowers, trees, and plants was evident in the many hours she spent tending and arranging her beautiful garden.

In keeping with Joyce’s love of flowers, they will be gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may also be made to Daffodil Place.  www.homeforthenight.ca

A special thank you to Doctor Heidi Brake and all the caregivers at the Miller Centre Palliative Care program.  We sincerely appreciate all your love and care for our Mom.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Freshwater Road, St. John’s. Visitation will take place on Friday, May 8 from 2–5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.   For those unable to attend please join us virtually though Elim’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/elimtabernacle/ .  Interment to take place that afternoon at the Port de Grave Pentecostal Cemetery.

Uncle Raymond, cousins Bev Bob and Lindsey
Wish we could have shared our lives, attended the wake and the lovely service today. The price we pay for living across the country. What a beautiful life shared through Bev and Lindsey’s tribute, and Uncle Raymond’s thankful blessings. The different faiths blended in music and words was good for the soul, Aunt Joyce planned it well. Wish we could visit MacPherson Avenue and have one of Bobs delicious meals.

Now I will go to my happy place – my garden like a Stevens would and spend the day remembering, especially Florida memories.

God bless Aunt Joyce❤️ Love you all so much, hugging you across the myles xoxoxoxo

Ray, Lindsey, Beverly & Bob,

I am so very sorry to hear of Joyce’s passing.

I first met Joyce as a student at MUN library. I was a shy, young 18 year old from the bay so intimidated by the massive size of the campus and the thousands of students. I was filled with fear and missing familiar faces.

That fear left me the instant I asked Joyce for help at the MUN library. She was kind, caring and I felt like she had all the time in the world to help me. I would look for her every time I went there.

I instantly remembered Joyce’s face when I first met her as a neighbour on Mac Av many years later. You never, ever forget the people who have touched your heart and shown you kindness throughout the twists and turns of this beautiful journey of life……

Soar high with the angels sweet, gentle woman!

To The Andrews Family,

Mary and I were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved wife and mother. Please accept our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.

She was a truly beautiful soul whose kindness, compassion, and faith touched so many lives. Her love for helping others reflected the Christian life she lived so faithfully each day. Whether through her caring heart, gentle spirit, or the joy she found in flowers and the beauty of God’s creation, she brought warmth and comfort to everyone around her.

Her legacy of love, grace, and devotion to family and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May you find strength in the treasured memories you shared and comfort in knowing she lived a wonderful life grounded in God’s love.

Keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow.

We are so sad to hear off Joyce’s passing. Ray, we have such lovely memories of the times we shared with you and Joyce. We especially remember our lovely driving adventure many years ago as we travelled down the East coast of Canada and the USA and Joyce always going in to any place we stayed and checking out how clean it was before we got her seal of approval. We remember her love of family and how you were always first in her life! We can’t forget the fabulous meals we enjoyed together. I am sure you will hear many stories like this in the next few days,. Mr. Andrews, Lindsey, Bev and Bob ,
It is with much sadness that I heard of the passing of your wife/mom/mother-in-law. Mrs Andrews was a gentle kind soul who during my university days fed me many meals and made me feel so welcome in her home. I am sure that there have been many others over the years that she showed such kindness and love. I know your hearts are breaking right now but the love you all shared and the many memories you made will be a comfort in the days ahead. May you feel the love of all your extended family and friends. You have an angel watching over you now. Rest in peace Mrs. Andrews .

So sorry to hear of Joyce’s passing. She was a very beautiful lady with a heart of gold, a compassion for others and a smile that shone. I will never forget how caring she was for Pearl and myself when Pearl was sick. Joyce blessed us many times with words of encouragement, prayers, food and her laughter. She will never be forgotten. Praying for you all and so thankful that there’s an assurance of one day meeting her again.

Ray, Lindsey, Beverley and Bob, with love and affection we share with you in the passing of a wonderful wife, mother and Sister- law aunt and friend. Truly a wonderful lady who loved life to the fullest . She had strong ties to her beloved North River and spoke fondly of the area. Daphne and I realized early in this stage of her life that she was prepared for her final earthly journey, her faith was so very strong and with that she planned her final wishes.
We with you will cherish our memories, especially since Joyce is the first link in the chain of the present day Andrews Clan to be broken.. We continue the walk beside you on this journey. Love and prayers from Rol and Daphne & family
