Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on February 10, 2023, after a
courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, Kathleen Mary Woodford.

Predeceased by her parents Thomas Patrick Woodford and Judith Mary Woodford (Herder) and infant brother Daniel.

Leaving with cherished memories, her sons Nick and Sam Dobbin, and daughter Claire Dobbin
(Adam Parsons); brother Andy and sister-in-law Laura; brother Tim; cherished niece and
nephews Lily, Thomas and Daniel; Uncles and Aunts Jim and Gail Herder, John and Elsie
Woodford, Patricia Woodford; many, many special lifelong friends; several dear cousins of the Woodford, Kennedy, Herder and Carnell families; many treasured members of the Dobbin
family.

Kay’s infectious personality and smile lit up the room and she always had a cheery “Hi beauty!”
or “Hi darling!” greeting for everyone she encountered. She radiated kindness and affection in every step and was always thoughtful in her actions and her words. She dearly loved her family and friends and was happiest when they were all gathered together. A lifetime lover of playing a game of cards and having a chat: from playing 120s on Downing Street with friends, to weekly games with her dedicated Bridge mates, and finally Cribbage at the dinner table with her children – who she had trained well in the art. Her other passions included sailing, which was fostered from a young age on her father’s iconic Tom Cod, as well as an enduring devotion to singing and music, exemplified during her time with Lady Cove Women’s Choir.

Always eager to lend a hand, Kay’s very first volunteer experience coming out of university was with the Boys and Girls Club of St. John’s. She offered her time and expertise to numerous
other organizations since, including: board member of the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival; committee member of Blind Date with a Star, in support of Learning Disabilities
Association of Newfoundland and Labrador; board of directors with Newman Sound Men’s
Choir; chair of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra Silver Ball; board of directors with the
Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra; committee member of the Dr. Jack Hand Legacy
Foundation; committee member of the Canadian Cancer Society Festival of Trees; founding
member of the award winning Lady Cove Women’s Choir; member of Newfoundland and
Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs and served on their annual awards jury; and
Ambassador with the St. John’s Board of Trade.

Special thanks to the countless friends who offered their support during Kay’s illness, and who brought a smile to her face with their visits and flowers. The family is also extremely grateful to Dr. Marie O’Dea, Dr. Dawn Armstrong and members of the Eastern Health Palliative Care Team for the care and comfort they brought to Kay in her final days.

Family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, on
Thursday, February 16, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Friday, February 17, 2023 from

To Kay’s children and the Woodford family, I am so sorry to hear of Kay’s passing. As part of the the Commerce class of ’84, we were blessed by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that Kay brought to every occasion. She went on to lead a remarkable life of achievement and giving. She clearly holds a special place in the hearts of all that knew her.

Such sad news. I went to school a year behind Kay at Pius X and Holy Heart. We went to many of the same (numerous!) school music events. I remember spending a beautiful, relaxed afternoon with her and some others one summer in Holyrood. We might have even played cards! She had such a special smile, and a unique sense of humour.

Tim and family, I’m so sorry for the loss of your beautiful sister. Sending hugs to you and the Woodford families.

This is indeed very sad news. Kay was such a beautiful soul.It has been many years since our paths have crossed, but Kay is unforgettable. My deepest condolences to her family and legion of friends.

Sincere condolences to all of Kay’s family. She was a lovely person and it was a pleasure to work with her at my time at Tom Woodford Chrysler. Rest in Peace Kay.

Dear Andy,
I remember Kay fondly growing up in St. John’s and she was always laughing and smiling, always happy. I remember I loved her hairstyle so much that I asked my mother to cut my hair like Kay’s. So very sad for your family and friends, my heart goes out to you all. I pray for peace, grace and strength. God bless you. Sincerely, Virginia Montoya

Our deepest condolences to the Woodford family, as well as the multitude of friends Kay garnered over the years who she made feel like family..
Angela and I are two of the Commerce Class of ’84 alum who had the privilege to get to know Kay through the early 80’s. She quickly established herself as one of our ringleaders through her Herculean efforts to organize every class event and her congenial disposition, treating all with kindness, grace and humour.. I was also fortunate to continue studies with Kay at McMaster University where she was as quick to gather friends on the Mainland as she was at home.
We will miss her dearly but will forever treasure the memories of our days together.

My heartfelt condolences to Kay’s dear family, friends, and all who loved this beautiful human. Such a loss , too strong to comprehend . May she Rest In Peace .

To the Woodford family
A beautiful service for a beautiful lady.
What else can you say about Kay , that Father Paul hasn’t already eloquently stated at the funeral.
Please accept our deepest sympathies.
Paul and Susan Hiscock

To Claire, Nick, and Sam i am so very sorry for your loss. A loss to us all. Your mom was such a beautiful person inside and out and I know she is so proud of you. I’ve known Kay since high school singing with marvelous Sr. Katherine, then in university, and finally as a parent at my school. Here’s a little anecdote to help describe this wonderful soul:
Every few years we would take the choir and band students on a music trip, and inevitably there’s a few wonderful kids who even with fundraising were not able to join us. Kay is one of a few parents that for years I could call upon to anonymously pay the students’ cost. One time I had a lovely 14 year old guy who really had a gift but the parents were not in a position to pay the trip. I had this student sing “Home” by Bublé, and sent the tape to Kay. Within hours she emailed me back: ” How much Susan? This kid is so talented…he’s going!” I thanked her for her constant kindness and she just said ” I’m so glad I’m able to help.”
Kindness, beauty and personality galore. I am sure you are so proud of your mom.

Claire, Nick and Sam
I was so sad to hear about the passing of your beautiful Mom. We all loved seeing her during her many visits to Rennie’s River Elementary, and she showed kindness to all. I can see her now rushing down the hallway for parent teacher interviews with that big smile. Please accept my deepest condolences, and know I’m thinking about you lots.

Kay ♥️ all my love to the family. I sang with Kay in Lady Cove and loved her. Much love to all as you grieve the loss of a true force.

My warmest condolences to Kay’s family & friends. To think of Kay is to picture her infectious smile. Always a smile. Indeed, much too young.. A beautiful service.

A beautiful and deeply touching funeral service worthy of one who had great and positive impact on many others. She was very worthy and deserving. I cannot attest to her vast multitude of achievements; I can attest to how kindly and respectfully she treated others. That is the legacy of Kay I will remember.

Sincere condolences to Andy and all the family on Kay’s passing. Such an amazing woman that impacted so many lives.
May the memory of that great legacy give each one of you strength ,hope and comfort in these days of sadness and grief.
Hold those beautiful memories close at heart.
Rest softly Kay.
Andy and Agnes Careen.

A wonderful goodbye today for our beautiful friend . Sam, Nick and Clare, your Mom has left a spectacular legacy and lots of support to lean on . Take care.

Beautiful ceremony online, wish I could have been there to hug Nick, Claire and Sam. I am sure the rest of the Hickman family has been giving them all the hugs in my absence.
Will miss my beautiful friend Kay dearly. Will miss her smile, her hugs, our chats, and the joy she’d bring to every situation.
Love and miss you, Kay the Great.

She was a force of positive energy. Condolences to the family.

Kay was loved by so many.
She started helping with Blind Date( our fundraiser for Learning Disabilitues) early on and was the best at reaching out to local celebrities to take part.
Kay knew them all and no one could say no to Kay.!
She really helped this fundraiser take off and I can’t thank her enough.
I will miss her deeply and wish to send my sincere sympathy to her children who she was so very proud of!

To Kay’s family & friends,
I am so terribly sorry to hear of Kay’s passing. Please accept my heartfelt condolences at this very difficult time.

May Kay rest now in love and peace having lived her life so, so beautifully.. Heartfelt condolences to Kay’s beautiful family and dear friends. ❤️

I first met Kay at University, Commerce ’84. She had that disarming smile then, as in the photo displayed. Would light up the room. Throughout life you meet few people who are special by what they give to others. Kay was certainly one of those. Never one to say no, no matter what the ask. My sincerest condolences to her family. Give like her, and the world will be yours.

Brian Murphy

Kay’s family and ours goes back a long way as our parents were good friends. When our father Bill died a few years ago it was Kay who not only arranged a singer for us but the full Lady Cove Choir to sing a beautiful rendition of Auld lang syne. For that we were all ways be grateful..
kay seemed to be everywhere, full of energy and spirit touching so many lives as she went.

Andy, Tim, Kay’s children, and extended family: I would like to add my sincerest sympathy to those of others on Kay’s passing. The world has lost a beautiful soul…too young; too soon…but with all the lovely tributes that have been left on this site, it is quite obvious that many lives have been enriched by Kay’s presence. This is her legacy to you. May it bring you great solace in the days and weeks ahead as you learn to live without her.

I was so saddened to hear of Kay’s illness and passing. I knew Kay and her family from the RNYC. Each Wednesday night and on weekends she would join her Dad and her brothers Tim and Andy and crew to race on Tom Cod. Her Mom would always join them after for the celebrations. I am sure her parents met her with open arms. Kay was a beautiful lady inside and out with a smile that would always radiate from her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her children, brothers and all her family and friends. May her Precious Soul Rest In Peace.

Heartfelt condolences to the Woodford family on this tragic loss. Kay was an absolutely beautiful lady – inside and out – and someone I was so proud to count among my close friends. While our lives went in different directions in our mid-20’s, our friendship always just picked up where it left off, whenever I had the good fortune of running into Kay on trips back home. She truly had a special way of lighting up a room and making people feel good about themselves.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. While this loss is so hard to reconcile, I hope you find comfort in knowing that you were blessed to have had the love and life of a really special person, who ment so much to so many.
Cherish your memories of this incredible lady.

My condolences to Kay’s family. I was one of the many graduates of MUN’s commerce program that had the pleasure of Kay’s friendship at that pivotal time of our lives. She was indeed such a kind, compassionate and positive spirit – so inspiring to all of us. I will miss her genuine gorgeous smile. My thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.

We lived in our house on Pine Bud Avenue for a few years and the Woodfords became our new neighbours, friends and family. Our families grew up together sharing homes and experiences. Memories of Kay were her bubbly personality, infectious laugh and her kindness. She will always have a special place in our hearts.. Kay will missed & always be in our hearts.
The Hanrahans of Pine Bud Avenue.

So saddened to hear of Kay’s passing. She was a beautiful lady, and I remember her more as a young girl when she spent time at her parents’ family summer home in Holyrood. I babysat for her and the boys on at least a number of occasions, and she was always so pleasant and talked to me of her dream of singing. Sending condolences and deepest sympathy to her children, Andy, Tim and all Kay’s family and friends. May her gentle soul RIP. God bless you all.

So so sorry to hear of Kay’s passing. She had a smile that would light up a room and the personality to match. So grateful to have her as friend through Business School and the years that followed. Thoughts and prayers to family and friends

Nick, Sam and Claire

My condolences to the families, very sorry for your loss.

My heart goes out to the Woodford family, and Kathleen’s friends at this horrific time of grief! I knew Kathleen as a child, Tim and I were classmates at St. Pius and my grandmother lived across the street from the Woodfords on pine bud ave! Kathleen, always even as a teen was full of light and grace and would most certainly go out of the way to make you feel comfortable! I would always be in awe of her contagious smile that would instantly make you feel at ease when you entered a room Kay was in! If there were more “Kay’s” in the world, it most certainly would be a better place to live! May you rest in peace Kathleen and may your family take comfort in knowing how her kindness touched so many! My deepest condolences go out to each and everyone in Jays family and her many friends!

Our sincere condolences on the passing of Kay.. She was a beautiful person who shared her light and the warmth of her smile with all those she encountered.
Our deepest sympathy to her family and her many close friends.

Kay will be so missed. Going back over 40 years, and never a cross word, and always a laugh through business school, sailing at the RNYC, helping out and volunteering with the NSO, and of course long chats at the car dealership back in the day, when we’d never know the price of the car we brought, because we were to busy having a good time…. what’s better than that – a life so well-lived but too short.

Heartfelt condolences to Kay’s family and friends. Such a lovely lady with endless kindness. Each encounter was a holiday of its own- magical in every sense. Happy memories of cocktails at Sandy Cove savoring the evening sun, sharing dinners and hearing wonderful stories. He mega watt smile instantly made everyone feel treasured. And those beautiful blue eyes, pools of love and acceptance. You are dearly missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Kay’s passing. Kay was such a beautiful person, inside and out. She would always have a kind word and smile any time you saw her. My deepest condolences to her family. God bless you.

Please know that you are being held closely in my thoughts and prayers as you navigate this very difficult time. Kay’s impact on so many was far-reaching and profound. Her loss is unfathomable.
Kay and I didn’t see each other much in the last 35 years but that gap in time and distance has done little to erase the extraordinary impact she had on my life. We shared a vast treasure trove of experiences together – living together, traveling, and countless days and nights spent together during university. I cherish each of these memories, Kay’s twinkling eyes and high-wattage smile. Godspeed, my friend.

My sincerest condolences to Kay’s family, Andy and Tim. I have a picture of Kay with that larger than life smile etched in my mind as she is perched behind Skipper as we race across Conception Bay to cross the finish line first. I will always have that memory. Prayers and thoughts are with you all.

God looked around his garden and found an empty place, He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.

He saw your path was difficult and he closed your weary eyes, He whispered to you “Peace be Thine” and gave you wings to fly.

It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Rest In Peace Kay

My sincerest condolences to Kay’s family and friends. Such heartbreaking news. My heartfelt condolences to Kay’s precious family and many many friends. My memories of Kay are of a childhood spent at Pius X, and playing in her room at very young age. We both had surgery to our feet at same time. Our mothers had coffee and a chat. Unable to walk Kay and I played. We have lost a beautiful light. Kay is now free. We keep her in our hearts. She is in many many hearts

Our sincere condolences to Kay’s family. A beautiful spirit has left this world too soon. Cherish the countless memories.

Nick & family, sorry to hear of your moms passing, deepest condolences to you all at this very sad time.

Tim, Andy, Nick, Sam, Claire and families,

Every time we would see Kay a smile would come to our face. She was the sweetest , kindest and such a beautiful person. Inside and out. She has left an indelible mark on us all. Taken from us too early. Our deepest condolences to Andy, Tim and the entire family.

To all of Kay’s family and friends,
Lots of good memories of Kay, going to school, as she lived on Pine Bud Ave, around the corner from my. House on Allandale Rd. Kay would spend lots of time with my late sister, Carolyn, at our house.
RIP Kay

So very sorry to hear of Kay’s passing. I got to know her when I was neighbours with Spirit of Newfoundland, where she worked at the time. She helped me plan the most beautiful celebration of life for my late husband, who, coincidentally, also passed away after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. I will always remember her kindness, smiling face and sense of humour. My deepest condolences go to her children and all those who loved her.

My deepest condolences to Kay’s family.

I’m so sad to learn of Kay’s passing. Such a beautiful, kind soul. I’ve known Kay going back to our university days and trips together to Florida. Such fun. Kay was a joy in so many lives and has touched everyone she met. Such a beautiful legacy.

Tim and Andy,
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and Kay’s many friends. Kay was a legendarily bright light and an infectiously pleasant person. She was the little big sister to every kid in the St. Pius X neighborhood. A smile so big will never be matched. God bless Kay.

Andy, Tim, and Kay’s immediate family ;

I am so sorry to learn of Kay’s passing.

Our condolences and sympathies to your families during this difficult time.

May you find peace and comfort with memories.

Dear Nick, Claire, Sam and Kay’s extensive circle of loved ones,
I was so surprised and saddened to hear of Kay’s passing. Having finished with the Blind Date With a Star Committee (which Kay also brought her bright light to for longer than I did), and then moving to the west coast in 2020, I wouldn’t bump into her as often as I once did. The last time I saw her was at the Elk’s club this fall and at that time I simply assumed I’d see her again at some point in the months ahead – as I always did.
I’ve been searching everywhere for a pic she and I had taken together in 2013 at Nicole and Jamie’s pre-wedding festivities that I will always treasure.
Words won’t bring much comfort at this difficult time, but you must know that your Mom had a way of making everyone feel special. If love and kindness could keep her alive, she would live forever and ever.
Keeping you all in my thoughts and wishing you sincere condolences on this profound loss.
Deepest sympathies,
Amanda Hancock

Nick, Claire and Sam,
The last time I saw your mom was last summer and she of course was beaming with pride as she shared all the updates about you three.

Babysitting you two – Claire and Sam – in the summer was such a joy. Whilst Kay would often come back later than promised (making me late for summer sports, lol!) I couldn’t help but just laugh and admire Kay’s fun loving spirit and enjoyment of life – she was having too much fun…hence why the tardiness! I remember one time she came back later than expected, sharing a story of how she was behind because she got pulled over for speeding. But always taking it all in stride with her big smile and laugh!

She had the special gift of making you feel like the only person in the room and genuinely interested in your well being – cheering you on. I would say she was one in a million, but not even that is true, because there truly was and never will be anyone like her.

I am in disbelief that she is gone, but her memory and impact will always be felt as she touched more peoples lives than you’ll ever know. May you feel her spirit close to you and take comfort in knowing she will always be looking down on all three of you sending little “winks” from above (probably telling everyone up there how proud she is of all of you).

My deepest condolences to the entire family. My favorite HHM memories include Kay. She was an incredible person who was as beautiful on the outside as on the inside.

Sincere condolences to you all on Kay’s passing. She was a genuinely exceptional lady who always made time for others. I was saddened to learn that she had passed and have no doubt that she will be greatly missed by many.

Dearest Kay Kids,
You were given the most precious gift of a mother who actually set the people around her aglow with her warmth, inclusiveness and loving kindness. Her motto could have been this one: leave every single person you meet feeling better than how you found them. She loved everyone. Left no one outside the sphere of her beautiful beingness.
To say that she has left a gaping hole in the hearts of all of us who were fortunate enough to move in her orbit is a paltry statement.
To quote her dear friend Yvonne, “there appears to be a vortex of grief over the city of St. John’s” which I can say reaches all the way to California.
We are all of us gutted but our state is nothing to what yours is, that I know with certainty.
You will however learn to navigate around this void as you must and as the rest of those who love her will manage to do. It is all that we can do.
I wish you comfort when it seems impossible to feel anything other than pain and I wish you hope when hopelessness engulfs you. I wish you waves of joy, knowing that she is only a thought away and happily wrapped in her mother’s arms even as she watches over you with all the love in her soul. I wish you these things with all of the love in my heart.
My husband Paul knew your mother from when they were a bunch of kids on the beach in Florida and that she was very accepting of him (a little snot from the Battery -edit Renee) into her friend group and passes on his deepest sympathies.

Andy, Laura and family, so sorry to hear of Kay’s passing, , she was a force – a force in a great way, that infectious smile, always had something good to say about everyone she encountered. We are grateful, she touched our lives. Let her fill your hearts with smiles, and love. Corie and Stephen

So sad to hear this news . It has been many years since I spoke to Kay but needless to say…what I do remember …she always greeted everyone with a smile. In fact, I don’t think I was ever in her company when she didn’t have a smile on her face.

On behalf of our family we wish to extend our sincere condolences on the passing of your wonderful and loving Mother.. Kay was a special person to both family and friends alike. Her perpetual smile and glowing personality was a constant whenever you were in her presence.
Having been a close friend for nearly 50 years we saw the joy she experienced sharing in the success of all her kids and the outpouring of love and support which has been evident over the last number of months is a testament to the wide circle of friends who loved her dearly..
While it is a difficult time for you all, you can take strength and pride in the lasting impression she has made on everyone she touched over her lifetime and in keeping with her personality she was stoic to the end. She will be missed by all of us.. Tommy, Rhonda Williams and Family.
