Obituary

Passed peacefully away with his loving family by his side in the palliative care unit of the Dr. L.A. Miller Centre.

Predeceased by his mother and father Maria (Rees) and Edgar Somerton; loving sisters Dorothy, Margaret, Ella Smith (Bernard- deceased), Rita Gilliard (Bert- deceased); brother Cecil (Geraldine- deceased); and In-laws Albert and Winifred Joy.

Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of precious memories; wife Elizabeth; son Kelvin (Kim); daughter Tina Gosse (Ron); three precious grandchildren that he adored, Tyler Gosse (Gabriella), Victoria Gosse, and Vanessa Somerton; and his little buddies, his great-grandsons Chase, and Colton.

Kev will be missed by his brother Hubert (Lorna); sister Elizabeth (Albert); sisters-in-law Shirley Labonte (Conrad- deceased), and Mary Sears, and brother-in-law Albert Joy; special nieces Wanda and Patsy Somerton, and Julie Deriaz Best Friends Len Collins and Neil Mitchell; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Always willing to listen and have a chat, Kev will be remembered for his kindness and humor.

Kev served with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. As a veteran, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and had celebrated his 50-year membership in May. During his time with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 Portugal Cove, he held positions of President, and Sergeant of Arms.

Born and raised in Portugal Cove, Kev was a proud member of his community. He received the Portugal Cove/St. Phillip’s senior volunteer of the year award.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Palliative Care unit for their compassion and care of Kelvin, and to our family during his stay. Thank you to the executive and members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 for your messages, texts, visits, gifts, and phone calls.

A special thank you to Wanda and Patsy Somerton for their kindness over the past two years. Words cannot describe our gratitude. The care and compassion that you have given to Dad over the past two years has been immeasurable.

Thank you to the staff and residents of Westbury Estates Retirement Living facility for your kindness.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Saturday, October 22 from 2-9 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. Lawrence Anglican Church, Portugal Cove St. Phillips, on Monday, 24 October at 2 PM. Interment to follow at St. Lawrence Anglican Cemetery, Bauline Line Ext.

Flowers greatly accepted or a donation In Kev’s name can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 Portugal Cove.

To the Somerton family..l am so said to hear of Kev’s passing. I had the pleasure of knowing Kev over the past 15 years. I played darts at the legion and Kev was on my team several time’s. He loved his night out with the men and always had a interesting story to tell . He will be missed.

So sad to hear about Kev’s passing. Many years of working with Kev at the Children’s Rehab Center led to many fun times with him.
He was always in a good mood and certainly brightened up the day with his stories and antics !
I especially loved it when he would play with his invisible dog-“Sport” !
Rest well Kevvy ‘me b’y (as we called him at work). You will be missed.

We extend deepest condolences to Betty and family on the loss of a wonderful gentleman. Long time friends with many fond memories. Rest In Peace.

I recently visited Portugal Cove and stood next to your home reliving fond memories of my childhood. Gazing around recalling the wonderful families especially Betty and Kev. Please accept our condolences. Anna Harding and Family.
