L. Mildred Collingwood

February 26, 1924 to October 15, 2022

Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Mildred Collingwood announce her peaceful passing on October 15th, 2022 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.

Mildred grew up in Botwood and as a teenager, she moved to St. John’s to continue her schooling. It was around that time that she met her future soul mate, Nelson and they were married for 73 years until Nelson’s death in 2016. Mildred worked hard through her entire life; serving her community through their Dry Goods store at Collingwood’s Corner for 25 years and later, volunteering at Emmaus House food bank for over 20 years where her supportive and thoughtful nature were valued greatly by the clients and volunteers alike. She played an integral role in various fundraising efforts for the Anglican Cathedral during this time as well.

Above all else, Mildred was a devoted mother to Joan (Edward) and Anne (Gerry), and she continued to play a loving role in her family as it grew to include grandchildren Stephen (Cindy Rae), Michelle (Doug), Susan (Gord), Allison (Jason) and Christopher (Andreia) and great grandchildren Jessica, Jared, Ben, Jack, Josh, Raquel, Violeta and Emily.

She enjoyed spending time together over home cooked meals and desserts she knew her family loved, particularly at their special cabin at Rhody’s Pond. We all cherish our memories with her and look forward to sharing stories of her for years to come.

Thank you to Mildred’s special friends and to the exceptional staff at both Hillcrest Estates and St.Clare’s 6 West for all the care that Mildred received.

A private family visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home. A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held at the Anglican Cathedral on Wednesday, October 19th at 11:00 am and the service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Emmaus House or a food bank of your choice would be a wonderful way to honour Mildred.

We extend our condolences to the family on the passing of Mrs. Collingwood. Through the years we have had many conversations with both Mr. and Mrs Collingwood as we walked past their cabin at Rhody’s Pond. They both loved it there and we were always especially delighted to see them and admire Mrs. Collingwood’s beautiful Phlox that bloomed in her garden every summer. We have missed them both these last few years and we remember them fondly each time we go by.
Sincerely, Linda and Ed Murphy

Mrs Collingwood was a wonderful person who gave of herself to others and loved well. She has made a huge contribution to so many peoples lived by deed and example throughout her entire 98 years. I have known her for a long time and know her families that she raised and who loved her. She lives on in them and how they live their lives. Sorry for your loss.

For the family,
So sorry to hear the passing of your sweet dear Mom, Nanny …friend ….Mildred. I worked closely with Mr and Mrs Collingwood…..I couldn’t call her Mildred because I had so much respect for her. She was such a hard worker and always give it her 110 percent. She was involved with the Anglican Cathedral food bank and Christmas hampers. She would take some much care and thought into assembling each hamper. Some years she would have her grandchildren with her too to help with the heavy lifting. The love and devotion too at Emmaus House again was where they were most comfortable…always in the back of her mind were the children. She will be sadly missed but I know the family and friends have a ton of memories to share…especially the making of her cherry cakes at Christmas. Rest In Peace Mrs. Collingwood as your work here on Earth is done… I know your loving husband is waiting for you with open arms. You will be missed! Until we meet again!

May she soar with the angels. Remember her fondly ❤

Joan and Anne. Sincere sympathy on the passing of your gentle and gracious Mother. We have had our cabin at 2 Mile Post since 1952. I remember Mr. & Mrs. Collingwood as well as Mr. Teddy Collingwood since I was a child. As an adult I fondly remember Mildred and Nelson. It was always a pleasure to stop and have a chat with them whenever I was out for a walk. Until you all meet again, Rest in Peace Mrs. Collingwood. Memories are priceless.
