It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Lan Hong (née Fong) at the Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the age of 89 years.
Born on March 29, 1937, in Haiping, China, Lan lived a life defined by resilience, devotion, and quiet strength. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Yan Quon (Billy), and her cherished daughter Caroline. She leaves behind her loving daughter Julia, son William, daughter-in-law Yin Yin Mon, and her treasured grandson Mason, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Lan was a woman of remarkable determination and work ethic. One of her proudest accomplishments was her career as a kindergarten teacher in Hong Kong, where for over ten years she shaped young lives with patience, discipline, and care. After immigrating to Newfoundland, she went on to become the co‑proprietor of Hong’s Take Out in St. John’s, which she proudly ran for more than 30 years with her husband. Lan welcomed all customers as though they were family, and she considered them lifelong friends. She was deeply proud to call Newfoundland and Labrador her home.
Strong yet nurturing, Lan was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering willingness to offer heartfelt advice, to anyone who needed support. She was a longtime member of the Chinese Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (CANL), with special interest in supporting CANL’s Annual Flower Service and Lion Dance troupe. Her wisdom, independence, and compassion left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lan’s memory may be made to the Cancer Care Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador or the Health Care Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador or the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, and would be greatly appreciated:
Our family extends our deepest gratitude to Dr. Rajuki, Dr. Quinlan, Dr. Evans, Dr. Rockwood, Registered Nurse Pamela Hunt and the dedicated nursing staff of 4NB at the Health Sciences Centre for their exceptional care, compassion, and support. We are forever thankful for the kindness you showed our Mom during her time of need.
Lan will be resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, NL on Friday 15 May from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 1 PM on Friday 15 May.
She will be remembered as a strong, loving matriarch whose legacy of perseverance, generosity, and pride will live on through her family and the many lives she touched.

Dear Julia and William,
My deepest condolences. Your mother was always so generous and kind. Growing up I remember her at the front counter at the takeout – Always with a smile welcoming people in.. She was so hard working. She commented to me years later how many events and things she and your father missed while running that business – but still felt happy in making others happy through the takeout. I always enjoyed seeing her at community events. She delighted in seeing my family at these events and always told me so. She will be missed.
Dear Julia and William,
Jim and I were deeply saddened to learn of your mother’s passing. I first met your parents in Hong Kong more than sixty years ago, and over the years we shared many happy times with your family that I will always cherish. Your parents will be remembered for their kindness, warmth, and hard work, and for the lasting impression they made on all who knew them.
May they now rest in peace together.
To the Hong family,
We are so sorry to learn of the passing of your dear mother.. Mrs. Hong was our neighbour on Lambert Place for many years. She was a sweet, gentle lady who, when our grandchildren visited us, always came to see them as they played on our lawn. And she would always stop for a chat while on her regular walks.. We offer our sincere condolences at this sad time for all of you.

William & family…sorry for your loss.
Your mom was a very lovely and kind woman. She was generous to a fault. It was my honour to have known her. Unfortunately, I am in St Anthony this week so I will miss her celebration of life. My deepest condolences to Julia and the family.
Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your mother. We have known your family for more than 30 years, and throughout that time she was always remembered as a warm, generous, and kind-hearted woman. She had a special gentleness with young children, speaking softly and lovingly to my grandchildren as though they were her own.
Your mother was also a wonderful supporter of the Chinese Association Lion Dance troupe and CANL’s Annual Flower Service. Her thoughtful encouragement and the “lucky red envelopes” she shared so generously brought joy and blessings to many. She had a beautiful way of treating close friends like family, making everyone around her feel welcomed and cared for.
We will always treasure our last two visits with her in her home, which have now become precious memories for us.
May her soul rest in peace, and may your family find comfort and strength in the love and memories she leaves behind.
