Passed peacefully away, at the Palliative Care Unit in Corner Brook, on April 22, 2021, at the age of 96. Predeceased by her husband Hubert and sisters Madonna, Blanche, and Carmel. Left with fond and loving memories, children: Don (Bertha), Dave (Barb) and Ann (David Coleman); sisters Fran Patchak and Barb Pike, as well as special friends Bernice Keough, Carolyn and Colin Budgell, a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Laura was born in Tors Cove and moved to St. John’s as a teenager. In 1945, she graduated as a Nurse from St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.  In 1950, she married Hubert Hickey. She took a break from her nursing career until her children were finished high school. She then worked at Exon House for many years, caring for children with special needs. After her retirement, she became a volunteer with several community organizations, including The Parkinson’s Society, Meals on Wheels, and the St. Pius X Catholic Women’s League.

Mom had a positive outlook on life and was an independent fun-loving person with a great sense of humour. She was a caring person with everyone she met and left a memorable impression on those around her. She was affectionately known as “LoLo” by many of her relatives.

Mom liked to travel and would often visit her three sisters in the US who married American servicemen. She also liked to go on cruises with her close friend Bernice. On one of her many trips she kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland.

At her home, Mom loved to entertain with family, friends, and neighbors. She was a great cook and baked countless birthday cakes for her children, grandchildren, and other family members. Everyone loved her million-dollar icing. We were always surprised with her many different types of desserts including cakes and cookies. She hosted or attended many card games as she liked to play bridge and auction. She was an avid gardener and hosted numerous garden parties. Family was everything to her.

So very sorry to hear of the passing of the lovely and gracious Mrs. Laura Hickey. Laura was a very good friend to my mother, Mary McDonald, who passed in 2020. They played cards and socialized together frequently; my mother always spoke very highly of her and very much valued their friendship.

Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Mrs Hickey. Truly a beautiful woman both inside and out.
