Linda Margaret Leonard

April 26, 1955 to January 14, 2023

Obituary

Passed peacefully away in the arms of her husband David on January 14th, 2023, Linda Margaret Leonard (nee Percy) age 67 years after an extended and courageous battle with Cancer.

Predeceased by parents Evelyn and Roy Percy; parents-in-law Greta and Edward Leonard; also predeceased by sister-in-law Elizabeth Leonard and brother-in-law Francis Ryan.

Leaving to mourn husband of 43 years David; sisters (Irish twin) Karen, Donna (Chris) Power, Renee (Ken) Beanlands, brother John (Louise); sister-in-law Barbara (Peter) Simmonds and brother-in-law Ed Leonard, as well as many nieces and nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours, (Bubble Buddies and best friends) Darlene and Jerry, the “Fantastic 5” retired nursing co-workers who were always there for us.

Thank you to Dr. Stuckless and staff at radiation therapy and the chemotherapy unit. Special thank you to Dr. Armstrong – your care and encouragement to continue travelling made dreams come true.
Also thanks for the compassion, respect and care of Dr. Fardy, Dr. Rogers and entire staff at the palliative unit who made the transition as gentle and as peaceful as possible. As well as many thanks to the home care team at the community support program Topsail Road.

As per Linda’s request no visitation is planned. Internment at a later date to be announced.

Linda was a Registered Nurse for 41 years – a profession which she loved and took great pride in. She was blessed with boundless energy and a joy for life. Her passion for travel and wide eyed wonder of each new destination and the feeling of coming home to favorite haunts was infectious.

Linda’s open and honest personality endeared her to all she met. Europe was her go-to of choice. She was always saying “we’re so lucky” whether sitting contented at a café or hiking up a mountain.

Moon River was our travel theme song and whenever she heard it she would get emotional remembering the good times and hoping for more. Even with her difficult fight with the disease she was determined to cross one more destination of her bucket list.

Linda will always be remembered as a fierce and iron willed lady whose unyielding grace gave her the will to battle to the very end.

Moon river, wider than a mile
I’m crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you’re goin’, I’m goin’ your way
Two drifters, off to see the world
There’s such a lot of world to see
We’re after the same rainbow’s end
Waitin’ ’round the bend
My huckleberry friend
Moon river and me

My Dear Dave.;
My deepest condolences to you. Linda was a beautiful lady and will be greatly missed.

We have no words to express how saddened we were when we received the news about Linda. She fought the great fight, lived in hope and was determined that she was going to continue to have new adventures despite her diagnosis. – and indeed she did. I recall your wedding day and how happy you both were and then continued to live as newlyweds throughout the years.. You both ensured people felt special when invited to your house and the ladies always left on Valentines Day with a rose and chocolates. David, cherish your memories and to quote Helen Keller “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us”. Take care and stay in touch.

Linda was the Florence Nightingale of nurses as shown throughout her nursing career. I graduated with Linda in 1975 and worked together for 30 years in the GI unit as a colleague and a very dear friend during and in retirement. So many memories and laughs over the years we were family which included her soul mate and partner Dave.At Christmas Linda would quote a line from A Christmas Carol ” God Bless Us, Ever One. We were blessed to have known Linda.

Dave, My sincere sympathy. I feel your pain and suffering. It will be two years on March 16th since Marge died in my arms. The pain and your mourning will continue as you live with your memories.

Dave ,and the Percy Family ,
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Linda’s passing . I met Linda in the early 198o’s when I was a nursing student on 4NB at the HSC . From the first time I met Linda , I knew she had all of the characteristics that made up an exceptional RN . She was always so calm , understanding , kind and compassionate …. a true role model and mentor for a young student nurse .

Over the years that followed we would catch up , have a chat and share a few laughs . I met you Dave when ye were out and about the city on few occasions and it was a real pleasure to witness your loving relationship. I also knew John, Linda’s brother as we had a mutual friend back in the 80’s . John , Linda always thought the sun shown out of her only brother and she was so proud of you .

This world could use more Linda’s . God had a reason for taking her which we don’t understand but I would think He needed more angels . May Linda Rest in Peace .

Dave, please accept our deepest sympathy. To hear of Linda’s passing is absolutely heartbreaking. She was a beautiful person inside and out. The life you both shared was an inspiration to all who witnessed it. We have very fond memories of some beautiful dinners at your place and we speak of them often. As a couple, your enthusiasm for travel, and life in general, was infectious. It was always a privilege to be in your company- the love and admiration you two shared was palpable. Thinking of you at this incredibly difficult time and praying for strength for you and the family.

My heart is broken to have lost such a close beautiful friend. I have known Linda since my early years as a nurse and we became close friends when she came to the GI Unit to work with us for thirty years. Linda’s kind compassionate way with our patients was beyond remarkable. Always worried and thought about them even when they left our care. She was a great support and confidant to me through many stressful times. She was a fabulous nurse
Outside of work we had many great times and a lot of laughs. She was always ready and excited for girl outings and she was known as the Christmas Elf! Her excitement and enthusiasm always started the Christmas spirit early.
I loved hearing about the trips that her and Dave would go on and over the last couple of years fighting her illness she managed to travel a little more.
Dave her love for you was abundant and you were her hero. She would always say when she talked about you”Dave, god love him”. I always admired the love and respect you had for each other.
I could go on and on but I will cherish my memories and miss her dearly.
Dave I hope you can find the strength to carry on knowing that she will always be with you.
Sincere condolences to you and the Percy family
