Obituary

MCARTHUR, Loretta – Passed with peace and grace on September 13, with her family at her side. Predeceased by her parents Edward and Ida Vaughan.  Survived by her loving husband Brian, daughter Elaine (Paul Follett) and son Andrew (Jillian Keough).  Also left to mourn are two treasured grandchildren Olivia and Mason Follett, sisters Margaret (Garfield Avery) and Marilyn (Charlie Cofield), and brother Howard Vaughan (Linda).  She will also be forever missed by her extended family of nieces and nephews who lovingly knew her as “Aunt Dorella”.

Loretta was born in Small Point, Newfoundland, and moved to St. John’s as a young woman to begin her working life.  After marrying Brian, she continued working and raising a young family until a life-changing illness over 45 years ago.  Her strength and endurance from that time served as an overwhelming exhibition of the potential for the human spirit to overcome the most devastating of circumstances.  She will be always remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt whose greatest passion was her family.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Petra Joller, Dr. Cheryl Hurley, and Valerie Maher, RN, for their care over the recent months and years.  She was cared for by numerous other Physicians, Respiratory Therapists, Nurses, and other medical professionals for more than four decades, and we are so grateful for your compassion and dedication.  Special thanks to the many personal care workers who made a valuable contribution to her care.

Visitation is scheduled for 2 – 4 PM and 7-9 PM on Wednesday, September 15th and Thursday September 16th at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s.  A funeral service will be held at George Street United Church, George Street, St. Johns, at 2 PM on Friday, September 17th.  Interment will be at 2 PM on Saturday, September 18th at Broad Cove United Church Cemetery, Broad Cove.  Flowers are welcomed but in lieu, donations may be made in her memory to Empower – The Disability Resource Centre, or the charity of your choice.

Brian and family, we are so sorry to hear of Loretta’s passing. She was such a pleasant lady. I remember at one of the City’s Christmas parties, many years ago, we had a sing along and Fred was sitting on one end of the room and I was sitting next to Loretta, she looked at me and said that man over there doesn’t have a note in his head, I laughed and responded I know I’ve been married to him for years. We had a great laugh and spoke of it several times over the years. She was such a fun loving person, may your many wonderful memories help you though these difficult days.

It is with extreme sadness that we learned of Loretta’s passing . Do you remember at the beginning of Loretta’s sickness ,and I am certain that you do ,you had a small dog and you couldn’t take care of him anymore ,so you asked me to take him. Well the little dog was renamed Frisky ,and became the pet for my three sons as time went by . We had him for sixteen years ..
Brian and family, we are thinking of you at this time .

I met Loretta and Brian when I was a Nurse Intern in ICU when she was admitted with her illness. Then as a new nurse in the ICU a few months later. You were both so strong and determined to get home and live a normal life. And as a testament to the care and loving Loretta received from her family and others, Loretta stayed out of hospital for 22 years and only then because of an accident. I am so honoured and humbled to have known Loretta. What a role model she was. And such a sense of humour. My condolences to Brian, and Andrew who I know will miss her dearly.. my thoughts are with you all.💕

To our friend Brian.
