Obituary
Lucy Ann Miller traveled through the journey of life with joy, friendship, passion, patience, and strength, creating a community that never stops growing. Her hope, positivity and sunshine will continue even after her passing on September 18th, 2025. She saw the world through rose-coloured glasses, which helped everyone around her feel loved and accepted. She never judged; she only knew how to care for all who had the pleasure of her friendship.
Artist whisperer, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, adventurer, occupational therapist, ‘glitter girl’, and constant friend. There are not enough words to describe what she means to her husband and soulmate Jim, children Daniel (Allison) and Jamie, sisters Deborah and Sarah (Randy), grandchildren Bailey and Kai, and the community of loving (great) nieces and nephews, cousins and in-laws in the Capps, O’Grady, MacDonald, Miller, Noseworthy and Dooling families. Also remembered dearly by the Melvilles & Capps’ clans in England, and an abundance of devoted friends – the Glitter Girls, Water Polo and OT friends, and so many more. All who loved her hold her in their hearts now with her best friend and sister-in-law, Sue; her nephew, Devon; her parents, John and Susan; and her father-in-law, Harold.
Lucy was known for her active and adventurous nature. Throughout her life she enjoyed numerous activities and the teams built within them, including rowing, lifeguarding, synchronized swimming, and running. Her love of travel was fostered from a young age while living with her parents and sisters in England, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Canada, as well as on numerous family trips. Her family finally found roots and a place they called home in Newfoundland. Lucy, the self-proclaimed travel agent, planned many incredible trips with her family and friends: sailing trips and catching Florida sunsets, gelato-filled escapades and film festivals with her daughter Jamie, gallivanting with the Glitter Girls through many a countryside while singing in their matching jackets, and one unforgettable experience with the “Portu-gals”.
Lucy’s first friends and confidantes were her sisters Deborah and Sarah. They share a love of life and true friendship that has followed them around the world, supporting each other through all the happiness and hard times. Deborah’s warmth, calmness and wisdom guided Lucy and Sarah, balancing their “twinergy” with grace. Although you immediately knew when the Twins entered a room from the increase in energy, they were often found silently communicating through twin telepathy. Together they were a dynamic duo of adventure, laughter, and spontaneous song and dance. Lucy was Sarah’s person, the right hand to Sarah’s left, and forever her wombmate.
Lucy had an exceptional career as an occupational therapist, which reflected her commitment and care for the well-being of all people. She spoke fondly of her time at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center and spent much of her career on the creation and evolution of the Occupational Therapist Assistant Program at the College of the North Atlantic. Lucy was a pillar of the OT community in Newfoundland, providing interdisciplinary, community-based services, including programs for children with autism and learning disabilities, a feeding/swallowing clinic for Pediatrics, traveling clinics for Children’s Rehab, and advocating for OT services in schools and at the Janeway. She brought this compassion and her organizational skills to the board of Stella’s Circle, work she was proud to contribute to for many years.
Lucy was the heart and cornerstone between the Miller and Capps families, forging an extraordinary connection that united everyone as one big group of aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. She was a mother and grandmother to her core, always beaming with pride when talking about Daniel,Jamie, Bailey and Kai’s accomplishments. Lucy constantly went above and beyond to show her children the depths of her love. She was their biggest fan, helping with any task big or small, while providing trust, compassion, and invaluable advice. She was overjoyed when she became a grandmother, and Bailey and Kai loved their NannyLu dearly. Together they celebrated every magical moment, milestone, game, campfire, swimming lesson and silly sleepover. She was an aunt and great-aunt to her treasured nieces and nephews, but her innate kindness, generous love and enthusiastic pride always made her feel more like a second mom and grandmother. She could usually be found having a not-so-quiet morning coffee or afternoon tea with various branches of the wide family network, or helping organize the next “Big Weekend” at Snow’s Pond and family fun at North River.
Lucy’s life is deeply woven into the indescribable love between her and her darling husband Jim. It was felt by anyone, strived for by everyone, and questioned by no one. She was Jim’s muse, partner, and co-pilot throughout their incredible ride of life. She was known as the “artist whisperer”, as she was able to understand and communicate with Jim in a profound way about creativity, philosophy and the artistic process. Her happy place was sitting in the studio with Jim, listening to Bruce Springsteen, pleasantly offering words of encouragement. She created an intangible fire that warmed their home and was the inspiration behind all of Jim’s work, while always holding his heart and their life with steadiness.
Lucy will be the heartwood of her family and friends, forever grounding us through grief’s uprooting. We will carry with us the abundance of wisdom she has shared, most importantly, the true meaning of love, acceptance, and connection. Lucy would want us to live life to the fullest, embrace the madness, ride the ‘freaky circle’ called life, and meet each day with patience and positivity. Lucy’s energy will be found by the sea, forever wrapped in the blanket of Jim’s endless love, gently supporting the creation of magic.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion during this challenging year. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Newfoundland and Labrador Cancer Care Foundation are welcomed.

We were close friends especially in the early years at the Children’s Rehab. Then Mary and Jamie became fast friends. I can remember so many mornings talking outside Vanier about what was new in the world, school, and our families .

Sarah, family and Glitter girls, I am so sorry to hear of Lucy’s passing! When I was 16 I worked a summer job at the Miller Centre with her as an OT aide. I always remember how sweet she was to me and taught me so much even as a newly graduated OT herself. I really looked up to her. I know she held a special place with so many people💗

When I knew Lucy she was light, laughter and love. She obviously never changed. The tribute to her captured a remarkable life. I got to know Lucy through working with her at the CNA. From the very beginning of the setting up the OTA Program. I was very impressed with her ability to handle so many irons in the fire. Lucy and I worked together as occupational therapy colleagues for much of our careers. She contributed greatly to the profession in the province and to the lives of the many children and families she supported., as well as her students at the College of the North Atlantic . Lucy was an innovator, an early adopter of new practices and willing to pursue new ideas. She always gave 100 percent to whatever she tackled. Her positivity and vibrant and caring personality drew people to her. We met again in play groups with our grandchildren and she exuded the same positive energy and enthusiasm and love of life.

To the miller/Capps family my sincerest condolences go out to you all! Lucy was a rare gem and one of the kindest most down to wart people I ever had the pleasure to know and like family, I remember when Kent was a baby Lucy came often to check on Kent with her OT profession and assuring me all the time that Kent was a healthy bay. Often times I called Sarah and David’s and Lucy would answer the phone and I’d say “ hi Sarah” and she’d say “ no it’s Lucy” and laugh! Her easy personality and zest for life was easily noticed! I have such fond memories of Nanny Lou bringing Bailey and Kai to playgroups. She truly was the fun grandma—not only to them, but to all the children. She always had enough love and joy to go around. I first met Lucy when she applied for a job at the Children’s Rehab Centre. She was fresh out of OT School. She was rowing that year. She BOUNDED into the OT Dept every day. She filled it with Light and Laughter and Great Skills and great Love for the Kids and Staff alike. Lucy and I maintained contact over all the years since. Such a bright light gone much too young. I was blessed to work with both Lucy and Sarah at Upper Gullies Elementary in the beginning of my teaching career. Their expertise and kindness guided many ISSP meetings and my programming for my students. It was a gift to work together in the school as a team in this way.

Lucy was an absolutely amazing person and one of the most positive, loving and giving people you would ever have the privilege of meeting. From our first meeting at U of T, she had a profound impact on me which truly changed my life.
