Obituary
Passed peacefully away at Pleasant View Towers, on Monday, July 11th Mabel Abbott in her 90th year. Predeceased by husband, Gordon, sisters Violet Reelis, Eliza Butler, and brother Fred Squires.
Left with many fond and loving memories, sons Vern (Elaine), Keith (Karen), Colin (Michelle); daughters Valerie (Russell) and Rhonalee (Gary); grandchildren Mark (Lisa), Ryan (Amanda), Kristopher (Sarah), Kyle (Brittany), Josh (Nicole), Adriana (Zack), Joel (Melissa), Steven (Anna); great-grandson Jake; sister Margaret O’Keefe; very special friend Maureen Haines and many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention.
Special thanks to Mom’s room-mate Sadie Day at North Pond Manor for taking such good care of our Mom during her stay there. Also, the family would like to extend our thanks to the staff of North Pond Manor and 4 South East Pleasant View Towers for your kindness and compassion.
The Funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 16, 2022 at St. Lawrence Anglican Church, Portugal Cove, NL. A celebration of Mom’s life will immediately follow at The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 10, Legion Road, Portugal Cove from 2-5:30 p.m.
Donations in Mom’s memory can be made to St. Lawrence Anglican Church, 1824A Portugal Cove Road, Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, NL A1M 2N2

Mabel and Gordon were icons in Portugal Cove. It was always a pleasure going in their take out. They were so welcoming. Mabel was all smiles and upbeat with genuine interest in how you were . Her ability to keep orders in her head was remarkable— I never ever saw her using pen and paper to keep track. Mabel was much loved and everyones friend. May her memory be a blessing.
To Vern, Keith, Valerie, Colin and all the Abbott family. We want to extend our deepest condolences to you all on the loss of such a beautiful and loving woman. We only just found out this evening that Mable had passed away or we would certainly have attended the funeral service to say goodbye. Your Mom was a lovely person and will be missed by everyone. But I’m sure that if there is a Fish and Chips takeout in heaven, she will be there by Gordon’s side making some of the best meals that ever came out of Portugal Cove. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. RIP, Mabel.

Well what can I say I,m aunt Mabel,s nephew Gerry O Keefe next to my mother Margaret o,Keefe ( Squires) ,her and aunt mable will always be a squires .She was the best aunt a nephew could have .I spent a lot of time visiting my aunt mable in the last few years for sure as her and my mom ( her sister ) were right across from each other at Pleasantville manor .Each and every time Joan and I would go see her and my mom there would be a clean up on isle four over from the fruit cake I use to bring them .My uncle Gordon and Aunt made the best grub period anywhere in Newfoundland hands down .Reading the condolences only proves what kind of woman my aunt was SHE WAS DA BEST PERIOD .She loved to dance with my father Frank okeefe at the dance in da cove many a night having to stay at aunt Mabel’s and uncle Gordon’s for the night ,wow they loved to party . I know one thing for certain my father is having a beverage in heaven as we speak with Uncle Gordon welcoming my Aunt Mabel into heaven ,the party continues up there for sure .Fish and chips for all ,with the fries done by Keith and Vern .What a woman and what a family I am proud to be part of the family it’s an honor .. Joan and I loved aunt Mabel and will miss her dearly . She was so so so proud of all her children . I will certainly miss the scattered dance at the home with her ,What an aunt she was simply the best Rest in peace aunt Mabel Joan and I will miss you dearly but Uncle Gordon has been waiting for a long time . Rest easy Mrs. Abbott,one of the sweetest ladies I have ever known,met her in 1980 at the takeout,then she stayed at North Pond in Torbay with us for a while,I always told her I wanted the fish batter recipe,she told me she would gladly pass it along if she could remember it,then we would laugh,rest in peace,my condolences to you all

To Mabel’s family, my cousins on Dad’s side, my condolences to you at this sad time. Your Mom, always with a brilliant smile and a hug, was a sweetheart. I have so many fond recollections of her. I remember the first time I rode my bike from St. Philip’s to Portugal Cove and stopped in for a small plate of fries (there was less traffic back then), and so many times after that over the years.; when I would see her and Maureen at work on a Sunday afternoon, it would brighten my day; at St. Philip’s flower services; and so many, many community and family events., etc. You all have an angel looking over you now, because she surely will.

I am so sorry to hear of Mabel’s passing. I remember her so well! My mom Dorthy Tucker would take me as a little girl to go get fish and chips. Mabel and her husband was always so nice and made my mother and I laugh so much. After 45 years I still remember them both and especially remember just how kind and gracious she was as-well. My sincere condolences on your mothers passing. Growing up in the Cove, Mabel as your mother was fondly referred to was the lady with an infectious smile that fed everyone from the shop on the pinch. How she managed to cook for all those hours and also raise such a well respected family came from a work ethic that does not exist today. It was so great to see her at the social events in her retirement years prior to that horrible disease taking control. I remember one such event that I was volunteering as cook and I made a point to bring her the meal,. I told he that I waited for a long time to finally cook her a meal in return for all the ones she prepared for me. I got a big hug and a smile that I will always remember. She made an impact on many lives and will be truly missed,

Always had a smile and an extra wing under my fries every week when I would buy lunch there… Bob particularly loved her hamburger platter with fried onions…I would say she snuke in more food than she sold …….she was a super lady who will suffer no more. I remember going to their snack bar on Fridays for a plate of chips & a bottle of pop for lunch. Your mom loved to see all the kids from St. Lawrence & knew everyone’s name. It was our “treat” for the week growing up.
Especially remember your dad & mom cutting the chips with the chopper. People came from miles to enjoy a feed!
Both of them & their snack bar Abbotts will always be a part of Portugal Cove history.

As a little girl walking to and from school I would often stop by to get my chips, dressing and gravey and she would sometimes sneak me a little piece of fish or a chicken wing and I was always so surprised and so very grateful felt like I won the jackpot.
