Margaret Frances Johnston

September 3, 1926 to January 15, 2022

Obituary

Margaret passed peacefully away in the presence of her daughter after a very difficult decline with dementia.
Left behind to remember her long and wonderful life are her daughter Linda and son in law George Rideout, her loving grandchildren-Megan (Marshall), Stacie (Will) and Shaun (Archie). Margaret will be missed by her sister’s in law Peggy Everard and Eva Walsh.
Also missing their aunt and great aunt are a wide circle of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews from the Everard and Johnston families.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Harold in February 2019, her infant son Neil, her parents Edward and Lucy, her siblings and their spouses – Dennis, Mary Leonard (Cosmas), Genevieve Johnston (Arthur), John (Dorothy) and Gerald, her in-laws and their spouses from the Johnston family, nieces Connie Everard and Isabel Johnston and nephews Craig Johnston and Wallace Clowe.
Thanks to the staff of Ruby Manor – Mom’s home from December 2015 – December 2020.
A heartfelt thanks to all the exceptional staff at St. Luke’s especially Trinity Square who have cared for her so lovingly since she moved there.
Margaret was a strong woman with a strong faith.
She loved the simple things in life – keeping her home neat and tidy, a game of cards, going for a “drive” and shopping.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was always there to care for them and offer advice or words of encouragement. Memories of after school care, cheerleading at childhood events, and the constant compliments (no matter how horrid the styles were) – “everything suits beauty” was a true reminder of her unconditional love.
Her favorite hobby was trouting – either winter, spring or summer. She was always the last one to reel up her line whether the trout had been biting or not!
Although the last few years of her life were challenging, you could often get a glimpse of the elegant lady she had been. We will miss her laugh; her side eye glances and her optimism.
Margaret has now been reunited with the love of her life, Harold, and we know they are sharing a glass of Chardonnay and trouting by the pond of everlasting life.
Flowers gratefully declined but if you can, please donate to the Alzheimer Society or The Gathering Place — Also – Give someone a compliment today- Mom always did!

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation, and a funeral service will be held at St. Kevin’s Parish on January 19th 2022 at 10:00AM by invitation only.

Try not to feel too sad. I’m sure that, like us, you’ll never forget her, and some day when you remember her, it will make you feel better. It may seem hard to believe, but it’s true.

As each of us meanders our way forward through our life’s journey, there are but a handful of those special humans who inspire us, affect us, impact us so profoundly as to have lasting, nay permanent influence on our character and our very philosophy.

Margaret Frances Johnston, Marg, was one such rare human. As a surrogate mom during the most formative time of our lives, she essentially raised me and my five siblings and permanently reinforced in us the core values that have made each of us who we are today.

She instilled the same in Linda and her whole family.
I will forever cherish her memory and am grateful and humbled to have known, loved, and been loved by her.

Godspeed Marg…

–Brian
