Sadly, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Margaret Irene Maloney, 93, has passed away. She died peacefully at St. Clare’s Hospital on November 15, 2025 after a brief illness.
Margaret was born on February 16, 1932 to Augustus and Mary Jane Moulton in Burgeo. She left home at 15 after finishing school and travelled to St. John’s where she worked at the Waterford Hospital until she was old enough to enter nursing school. She graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing and went on to a 35-year career that took her across rural Newfoundland, to London, England, where she completed a midwifery program, and eventually back to St. John’s, where she worked in nursing administration and completed a university degree in nursing.
Margaret was an amazing wife and mother. She was a masterful cook and delighted in entertaining family and friends. Her Sunday dinners were a feast, and her cherry cakes were much sought after at charity auctions. She embraced life’s small pleasures. A drink and a chat, a cup of tea with company, or time spent sewing and mending, and she never lost her fondness for a little excitement. A friendly game of Scrabble or a scratch ticket could brighten her whole afternoon. Always there when someone was in need, she gave so generously of herself and expected nothing in return.
Music was a huge part of her life. Margaret and Pat enjoyed countless hours of music with an extraordinary group of friends. She sang and travelled with Newfound Sound, and she never missed a performance by her children or grandchildren.
Margaret will be deeply missed by so many. She leaves with wonderful memories her three daughters, Mary Jane, Patricia (Stephen Grainger) and Peggy; her grandchildren, Justin Grainger (Kelly) and Amy Grainger (Kevin Gironnay); her great-grandchildren, Declan and Bennett Grainger; her sister-in-law Joan; and her 15 nieces and nephews and their families, especially Yvonne Grant and Maureen Murphy. Nan Nan was looking forward to meeting her newest great-grandchild, baby Gironnay, due in February. She will also be missed by the staff and residents at Bishops Gardens, especially her good friend Bill Finn.
Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband, Patrick; her four brothers, Arthur (Anne), Clarence (Louise), Harold (Florence) and Gordon; her in-laws Aidan (Eva), Brian (Elizabeth) and Mary; as well as many cherished friends.
The family is grateful to the wonderful staff at Bishops Gardens, Dr. Robert Slaney and those who cared for her at St. Clare’s.
Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Friday, November 21, 2025 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral Mass will take place from St. Teresa’s Church, 120 Mundy Pond Road, on Saturday, November 22, at 10:30 am. The service will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Diabetes Canada or a charity of one’s choice.

While we didn’t see Margaret much in recent years, we have fond memories of time spent with her in our home and the homes of her children on special occasions (parties).
Margaret had a quiet strength to her, along with her kind and generous nature, and she always gave the impression of one who knew what she wanted in life, her family being her primary focus.
She will long be fondly remembered.
