Obituary

Marilyn Bursey (Rideout), aged 69, passed peacefully away in the presence of family on April 7, 2025, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Leaving to mourn husband Brian, stepchildren Laurel (Greg), Forrest (Jessica and children Farrah, Griffin, and Marin), Erin (Matthew and children Alexander and Kathryn), mother Gertrude Rideout, sister Maxine Reddigan, niece Allison (Greg and daughter Anna), nephew Mark (Cassandra), and brother Paul Rideout (Cheryl and son Mark).

Marilyn left Grand Bank at the age of 16 to pursue her education in St. John’s. Following graduation, she had a long career of 37 years with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, where she worked with the Fire Commissioner’s Office, the Department of Mines and Energy, and most recently with the Bull Arm Site Corporation.

Marilyn loved children, dogs, and her garden. She was also a great lover of the outdoors, and accompanied by her husband, covered virtually every corner of the province on foot, by canoe, or in a boat. One epic journey resulted in a book “Trekking Through Northern Labrador”. Her travels were not restricted to Newfoundland and Labrador however. In total she visited 6 continents and about 50 countries, including some well off the beaten track such as the Falkland Islands, Kiribati, and Swaziland.

Most of all, Marilyn will be remembered as a wonderful wife, sister, and aunt, and as a good and respected friend to all who knew her.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday, April 9 from 2-4 p.m., and on Thursday, April 10 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, April 11 at 11 a.m.

To the Rideout and Bursey families,
I first met Marilyn in 1978 upon being employed at the Fire Commissioners Office. She was a great person to speak with and it wasn’t long before the Grand Bank connection was realized.
Over the years, throughout our careers with the province, we had occasions to chat about everything and nothing.

I never personally met Marilyn, but my aunt Laurel always spoke very highly of her. She always seemed to me like an incredible woman, and I am so sad I never got the opportunity to meet her. Laurel said she had lots of love to give. As part of the Booth family, I would like to share my condolences and pray for your family.

To the Rideout and Bursey family, our sincere condolences to you all. I was so glad that I got to visit with her a little while ago. She always had a great smile.
