Obituary

Passed peacefully away at home on September 28th in the company of her family, Marilyn Ena Patricia (Greening) Flynn. She was predeceased by her parents Roland Greening and Catherine Gladys (Swyers) Greening. Those left with gratitude for her wonderful life are her husband Noel, sons Jordan and Jaron (Kate Andrews) and grandchildren Gabriel, Jude and Zadie (and their mother Maria). Also her siblings Kathi Greening-Lawrence (Hibbert d.), Lorne (Elizabeth), Beverley Meikle (Ralph d.) and Donna Spencer (Jack). Her sister-in-law, Elaine Dunn d. (Jim) and brothers-in-law Tom (Nancy), Brian (Mary) and Martin (Noreen). She also leaves many nieces and nephews in the Greening and Flynn families.

Her father was a native of Musgravetown and her mother from Bonavista. Marilyn was born and raised in N.S. but was proud of her Nfld. heritage and was looking forward to witnessing the completed restoration of her mother’s home (Bridge House in Bonavista) which has been declared an historic property. Although small in stature she was big in dreams and adventures. She left Halifax in the ‘60’s with three of her good friends that took them to Boston for several months before heading to Los Angeles for a couple of years. Then back to Dalhousie for her B.A. and eventually to Toronto where she became a certified Montessori teacher and settled into a teaching position at the Newmarket Montessori School. Children have always been an integral part of her adult life, including when she moved to St. John’s in 1976 and had her two boys.

Marilyn had a strong commitment to living a healthy lifestyle and she devoted much of her time to the study and practice of healing touch. She and two other practitioners volunteered their services bi-weekly for almost 15 years (until halted by the outbreak of Covid) for residents of Emmanuel House. She was an exceptionally good listener and always had a keen interest in others’ lives. While gentle in manner and disposition she had a steely resolve and an open-mindedness to new ideas.

Family was her primary focus in life and Sunday family brunch took precedence over all else and, in addition to her children and grandchildren, often included extended family members as well. She was a “giver” who frequently put others ahead of herself.

The family wish to thank Drs. Pat O’Shea, Dawn Armstrong and Cheryl Hurley and Community Health Nurse Vivienne Ryan and the staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre for their outstanding care of Marilyn over the past 18 months.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  A private burial service will be held on Monday, October 3rd

A Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Donations in Marilyn’s memory can be made to the Rick Morris Memorial University Bursary or to Stella’s Circle.
