Passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family on November 19, 2024, aged 95.

Leaving to mourn, her loving husband of 70 years, Mark; children: Elizabeth (Joe Ryan), Mark (Barbara Muise), Jacquie and Maureen (Nick Gillis); grandchildren: Zach, Ben and Emma Marche (David Aylward), Evan Bourgeois (Deidre Shears), Ian, Sean (Ben Morrison) and Colin Gillis.

Mary was a school teacher and she valued learning, encouraging her children and grandchildren to pursue higher education. She was born on Allans Island, the eldest and last surviving of the 7 children born to Vincent and Mary (Tuff) Fleming. She was 8 months old when the tidal wave struck the Burin Peninsula in 1929. Her mother carried her to the highest point of land on the island before the wave struck and saved them from being swept out to sea.

Upon completion of high school, Mary attended Littledale College and received her teacher’s certificate. She subsequently moved to Stephenville in 1952 to work and there she met her future husband. She and Mark were married in 1954.

When she retired from teaching and had raised her family, Mary began gardening and various crafts. Quilting in particular, was her passion and she created beautiful works of art with fabric. She made many quilts including one for each of her 7 grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her brothers: Cyril, Jim and Tom and sisters: Kay Heder, Jean Ryan and Louise Marshall. Leaving to mourn, brothers-in-law Warrick Marshall, Steve Heder, Leonard Bourgeois, and sisters-in-law Joan Fleming, Ruth Bourgeois, Faye (Harold) Flynn, Marie Deacy, Glenda (Bob) Chavarry and Marg Rioux.

Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Freshwater Road on Thursday, November 21 from 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be held at Carnell’s Chapel on Friday, November 22 at 2 pm. Flowers gratefully accepted or a donation may be made in Mary’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of one’s choice.

The family wish to thank the caregivers at Cambridge Estates for their care and kindness shown our mother during the past 2 years. Thank you also to the many residents of the Cambridge family who shared friendship and who showed kindness to our mom.
