It is with great sadness that the family of the late (Mary) Helena Churchill, announce her passing peacefully away on November 15th 2022, at the age of 101.

Helena was born May 15, 1921, in Stephenville, NL to the late James and Mary Ellen (Cormier) Benoit. She was one of 14 children, with 5 brothers: Patrick, Joseph, Luke, Paul and Isaac as well as 7 sisters, Ellen, Edna, Elizabeth, Madeline, Catherine, Lillian and Josephine. She is survived by her loving brother, Andrew Benoit (Rose), residing in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Helena married the late Eldred Churchill on November 24, 1948. They raised ten children together: The late Wayne (Rose) Churchill, Gloria (Michael) Reddy, Gary (AnnMarie) Churchill, Beverly (Hugh) Cooper, Paul (Jennifer) Churchill, Jane Chaisson, Karen Churchill, Gail Eastman, Jacqueline (Louis) Greene, Christine (Brian) Kelly. Helena was so proud of the incredible adults they have become and the beautiful families they have raised, including 30 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Children were drawn to her, and she was always happiest when they were around.

Helena had a passion for cooking, and she made the best homemade bread, moose pies, and cakes. She was an avid knitter and seamstress, adding her personal touch to many special occasions, from handmade Christmas stockings to intricate wedding and christening dresses. She was known for her keen sense of humour and quick wit, always game for anything. Her beautiful smile would light up a room, and she glowed the brightest when she was surrounded by family and friends.

She was devoted to her faith, having instilled her beliefs and the gift of prayer to countless friends and family. Her kindness was without limit, whether you just met her or she knew you all her life!

Helena will be deeply missed by all who love her – her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and wide circle of family and friends.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 17th from 2-9pm.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Teresa’s, Mundy Pond Road, on Friday, November 18 at 9:30am. The service will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend. The link will be available shortly.

In lieu of flowers, to embody Helena’s generous spirit, we encourage you to donate in her memory to organizations who give to those most in need in our community. Dear Christina, Brian, Jackie and family:

When I heard of Lena’s passing and accessed the funeral home site and saw Lena’s picture, I felt sadness and I felt love for one. of the finest people I have met and known
.
Soon after arriving in Churchill Falls to start my job as a teacher, I met Lena at church and was invited to Lena and Eldred’s home for Sunday brunch. I have to say I had the best cup of tea ever.

As the years passed , I visited the cabin,, had dinners, had many pairs of pants hemmed and visited Lena in St.John”s.

I am also glad that Ann had gotten to meet and get to know Lena as well.

Needless to say, my memories are strong and will not be forgotten.
Rest Lena . xoxo

Paul

Such a wonderful lady. We enjoyed her visits to Florida so much. She would sit in the bedroom with my Mom and they would both be knitting and talking about the old days and all their memories for hours and before she left to go back home my freezer would be full of goodies that she would make . We will be keeping you all in our prayers .
