Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family shares the loss of Matthew William Stirling Soper, who passed away on July 5, 2026, at the age of 39, after a courageous battle with cancer, he leaves behind a legacy of creativity, passion, and love.
He was born on June 25, 1987, in Labrador City. Matthew was truly a man of many talents, known for his passion for both sports and the arts. Growing up, he was a well-rounded athlete who competed at the local, regional, and provincial levels, earning respect for his dedication and team spirit. Alongside his athletic achievements, Matthew had a deep love for music and theatre. He wrote and starred in numerous musicals and was a proud founding member of the Encore Community Arts Association, where his daughter Emily proudly continues his legacy through her involvement with Encore.
Matthew was a vibrant presence in the Labrador West music scene, performing with several bands, including Cold Shot and Ptarmageddon. With Ptarmageddon, he had the opportunity to perform at the East Coast Music Awards and participate in a Newfoundland Arts Centre tour—experiences he cherished deeply.
He was also a proud employee of Rio Tinto IOC, where his strong work ethic and character were valued by colleagues and friends alike.
Above all, Matthew was a devoted and proud family man. He loved deeply and unconditionally, finding his greatest joy in the time spent with his children and loved ones, always supporting, guiding, and cheering them on in all their endeavors.
Matthew is lovingly remembered by his wife, Megan Soper; his children, Emily Card-Soper, Carter White, Braiya White, and Shaye Soper; his mother, Jane Soper; his father, Bill Soper; his sister, Katie Payne (Mark Payne); his nieces, Lily and Emma; as well as many extended family members and close friends.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, William Soper Sr.; his grandmother, Rachel Wesley Soper; his grandfather, Leonard Stirling; his grandmother, Margaret Stirling; his aunt, June Cotter; his uncle, David Soper; and his aunt, Susan Burry.
A celebration of Matthew’s life and love will be planned to take place in Labrador City at a later date.

Matthew will be forever remembered for his passion, his creativity, and the love he shared so generously with everyone who knew him.

Dearest wife Megan , Jane ,mom and Bill, dad, My thoughts go back to the day Margie knew she was going to become a grandma and Len to be a grandpa when they lived on Bauline Line on Millers Pond. Margie wanted the family in St. John’s so they decided to visit Labrador City often which they did. Their first grandchild was their highlight for such a long time.as they anticipated all his precious steps in life.May God envelope the entire family with peace, grace and mercy during this very difficult time. 🙏..

Matt will always be remembered for the good times he and Rodger shared on the hockey rink and the bond Justin and Brad had with him through their mutual love of playing music with the bands. Those memories will always be special. Matt’s life was far too short but the impact he had on those who knew and loved him will never be forgotten.
