Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Maude Skanes (nee Hollett) announces her passing after a brief illness on Saturday, April 27th, 2019 at the Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 85.

Maude will be lovingly remembered by her husband Gerald, her two daughters Donna O’Driscoll and Beverley Leloche-Skanes (Cheikh), and daughter-in-law Kimberley Spurrell Skanes.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, her grandchildren, Lynda and Jennifer Leloche, Michael, Christopher and Katie Skanes, Jason and Ryan O’Driscoll, and Victoria and Michael Mackey; Five great grandchildren, Julien and Kieran, Paige, Kenzie and Juliette; three sisters Bess Smith, Helen-Jane (Junior) House and Gwen (Eli) Pardy; Brother-in-law, Graham (Verna) Skanes, sisters-in-law, Grace, Lillian (Maurice) Hollett and Lily (Philip) Hollett; Special friends, Judy and Al, Joan and Wilf, Millie and Bob, John and Peg, Mary Mills and Rick Miller; A large circle of nieces, nephews and friends.

Maude loved gardening, going for walks, having picnics on the beach and watching the sun set or having a good game of crazy eights with her grandchildren.

Most of all she loved her family and close friends. She loved them dearly and lit up every time she saw them. For all her quiet caring that spoke volumes from her heart, for all the special things she’s done, for all the years of being the very best kind of wife, mom, nanny, sister and friend, these thoughts of her are where loving memories now come flowing from.

The family would like to thank the staff of the stroke unit of the Health Sciences Centre as well as Lynn Miller for the devoted care that was provided during Maude’s hospitalization. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Freshwater Road, St. John’s, Monday, April 29th from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, April 30th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, May 1st at 11 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel.
