Molly (Mary Ellen) Kennedy (nee Lahey), age 69, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 surrounded by family and friends in the Palliative Care Unit at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre after a short battle with cancer.  She was born on Bell Island to Philip and Catherine Lahey, the youngest of twelve children.

Molly will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Clayton, sons Wayne (Tammy), Jamie (Rosalie), Don (Tiffany), stepdaughter Bernadette (John), grandchildren Daniel, Logan, Ava, Layla, Hayden, Dominic, William, and Matthew, brothers Gerald and Philip and sister Nancy; as well as many relatives and friends.

Molly was predeceased by her parents, brothers Donald, Jim, George, and Johnny and sisters Catherine, Bridie, Alice, and Veronica.

Molly will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice, friendly smile, outgoing personality, and her commitment to hard work.  She shared her gift of song while performing at numerous Country, Bluegrass, and Irish music concerts and events.  She was an active volunteer and spent many hours entertaining at local fundraisers and for charities throughout the region.  Molly enjoyed a wonderful career with Facilities Management at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.  She enjoyed travelling whether it was around the province or to other countries and spending time with family and friends.  Molly always loved a cup of Tetley tea with Carnation milk, as her friends will always remember.  

Visitation will take place from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Thursday, May 11, 2023 and from 2:00 – 7:00 pm on Friday, May 12, 2023 at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s.  Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 12:00 noon in the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s.  Interment to follow at All Saint’s Anglican Cemetery, 145-161 Dunn Hill Road, Foxtrap.  The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed using the link above.  

The family would like to extend gratitude to all the staff of the Newfoundland and Labrador Cancer Clinic, Health Science Centre Intensive Care Unit and The Miller Centre Palliative Care Unit.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.  Flowers will be graciously accepted.

We were deeply saddened to learn of Molly’s passing. Before retirement, she and Neil worked in the same building at MUN. She was cheerful, outgoing, friendly — always fun to be with. We shared interest and involvement in music; Molly was a great performer with a unique vocal style. We know she’ll be missed by many.

To Clayton and family I was saddened to hear the passing of Molly. I had worked with her with the cleaning services with Facilities Management in the Education Building with her. I would always remember her singing and present demeanour. Please accept my sincere condolences 💐.

Molly was always the first person to say good morning to me at the Faculty of Education. I enjoyed our chats and her fine sense of humour. Rest in peace Molly.

We are very sorry to hear of Molly’s passing. We knew Molly from Memorial University and spoke with her daily for many years. She was a warm and caring individual, with a pleasant demeanor and warm sense of humor. We always enjoyed our conversations with her. She will be sorrowfully missed.

I’ll never forget joining Molly for one of the music nights in the basement of St. Augustine’s Church. Her love of music and people bubbled through in everything she did (and I first discovered Molly’s love for singing when she was cleaning floors at MUN in the Fac. of Education) Her eyes, they shone like the diamonds…Was that beautiful voice coming from inside a classroom? You bet–and Molly lives on in our hearts.

This is sad to hear the news of Molly’s passing. Her smile and a little chat in the hallway will make your day. I am thinking of her family and offer sincere condolences.

Very sorry to hear of Molly’s passing. She was a welcome face at the Faculty of Education . I always enjoyed our chats about family and her love of music. Her meticulous attention and care of the Discovery Play centre for our visiting children from MUN childcare was always noted. Puppets and toys were always miraculously returned to their rightful place for the children to find the following day. My thoughts are with her family at this time.
