It is with much sadness, love and gratitude for a life well lived that the family of Myrle Ivan Vokey shares the news of his passing on August 17, 2024.  Myrle’s life overflowed with love, adventures, service, and songs.  His devotion to immediate and extended family, friends near and far, enriched the lives of all who knew and loved him.

Myrle was the fourth child born to Ethel and William Vokey on May 18, 1939 in the bustling town of Bell Island. His parents must have known that he was destined for great things since they gave him such a special and unique name, one that he would have to spell for others over the next 85 years! He had fond memories of a childhood filled with shenanigans and escapades as well as playing with his brothers, William (Dot) and Selby (Anita).

Myrle was a constant champion and advocate for his hometown of Bell Island. No friends ever came to visit Myrle and his wife, Marilyn, without crossing the tickle and touring his beloved home. In later years, he worked long and hard to bring as much prosperity to the island as he could. Equally as proud of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, as he was of Bell Island, Myrle always felt that he was living in the best little corner of the world. Our community and province have lost one of its biggest ambassadors and proudest sons. He was a Newfoundland treasure.

In 1960, meeting Marilyn Joan Carter, at church changed his life forever. Together they would build a relationship that would last for 65 years.  Married for 58 years, their love story was an inspiration to those around them. With full commitment, respect and a few “yes, Marilyn”, they raised their children, Krista (Bruce Cooper), Tonya (Brad Young), Keith, and Jennifer (Mike Tobin).  Their family home was the site of many happy times, parties with friends, family meals and, of course, music.

Above all else, nothing made Myrle more happy, content or proud than being called Poppy by his 8 grandchildren; Rhiannon (Liam Foley) and Moira (Jeremy Butt) Cooper, Thomas and Nicholas Young, Olivia and Arthur Vokey (mother Janet Tucker), and Rebecca and Sam Tobin. He took pride and joy in their accomplishments and daily activities. According to Myrle, “Grandchildren are my favorite hellos… and my hardest goodbyes.”.

Being a lifelong learner and educator, Myrle completed his Ed.D. through the University of Toronto.  He held a variety of roles in the field of education throughout his impactful career, including Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Director of Professional Development at the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association, Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador School Board Association. He also served as President of the Red Cross for both Newfoundland & Labrador and Canada.  Additionally, he performed innumerable speaking engagements and is credited with creating the world-famous ‘Newfoundland Screech In’ ceremony. He was the recipient of many accolades and awards including the Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year.  Myrle had the opportunity to travel to many places around the world. He interacted with royalty, dignitaries and politicians with the same ease as he would with his family and friends while playing a hand of cards at the kitchen table.

Myrle’s dedication to community service was a lifelong commitment for him. Some of his more significant contributions to organizations include Red Cross, Church Lads Brigade, St. Luke’s Homes, Computers for Schools, Patron of Kids Eat Smart, Eastport Festival, and St. John’s Gospel Folks Senior Choir.

Anyone who knew Myrle Vokey would know his passion for music. A self-taught musician, he played piano, guitar and accordion and could perform any tune requested (as long as it was recorded prior to 1965!). His repertoire comprised ‘good-old fashioned’ music; the country and western tunes that he loved so much, including his beloved Jim Reeves. Myrle was truly the life of the party, and he loved nothing more than a rousing sing-song. Friends could be at the door saying goodbye, and he would launch into another few songs extending the party as long as he could.

Myrle will be missed immensely by his family, whose lives were forever changed on August 17, 2024; including a large circle of extended friends and family with special mention of his aunt, Lillian Dicks. He touched many people with his warmth, kindness, gentleness, generosity, humility, and love. We will forever remember the stories and songs, the inspired life he led and the steadfast direction of his moral compass, and the talent he had for finding joy and laughter in the everyday.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Myrle’s name to the Canadian Red Cross or to the Church Lads Brigade would be gratefully accepted.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 on Thursday, August 22.  The Funeral Service will be held at St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, 1 Westerland Road, St. John’s on Friday, August 23rd at 10:30 am. The service will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend. The link is available above.

Marilyn and family
It was only this morning that I was informed about Merle’s passing. If I had known earlier, I would definitely have paid my respects. As you know Merle and I go back a long way, to the early 1970’s. We had shared many experiences in the school environment and with NLTA. His zest for life, humour, positive thinking will be remembered by many who crossed his path.
Take care
Morley and Phyllis Reid.

Keith and Vokey Family,

So very sorry to learn of Merle’s passing. Heaven will be a much friendlier and happier place with many songfests.

To the Vokey Family…

On behalf of the teachers of Newfoundland & Labrador, I send our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Vokey. I very much valued his smile, wisdom, and warm demeanor each time we met. He has left a strong legacy and his contribution to education and teaching in this province will always be remembered. Wishing you all strength and comfort moving forward.

Trent Langdon (NLTA President)

My condolences to Dr. Vokey’s family, extended family and large circle of friend and associates. His achievements are more than impressive. Unfortunately, only once did I have the pleasure of meeting this gentleman, when he was guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Cabot about thirty years ago. I mentioned to him that when he ran for Provincial politics, I resided in the riding. In that particular election, I happened to mention to my late Father, Jack Feltham, a fellow teacher that I was undecided. i just forget the name of his opponent. Dad commented that Meyrl was certainly well educated, very well informed of community, Provincial and Federal issues, and had a great sense of humour. In his wisdom, Dad perceived that characteristic has its place in the effectiveness of many meetings, debates and gathering. On that sage advice he got my vote.

Hi Marilyn. So sorry to hear of Myrle’s passing. Please accept our sincere sympathy .

I went to st Johns when I was 15 and was screeched in by Myrle. So very sorry to Narilyn Krista Tonya Keith And Jennifer. Sending you strength and hugs love the Switzer family

Marilyn I don’t know how to express how much my heart hurts for you and your family. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have met Myrle this summer; he was an incredible person. I will always cherish the memories of July 22, 2024, the day we spent exploring Bell Island, our delicious meal of fish and chips, listening to Myrle’s amazing stories, and even the flat tire! After that long day, there was more celebrating—a visit by mummers in July, an evening of singing and music at your home. Getting “screeched in” by none other than the man who created the tradition was unbelievable. Myrle was truly amazing and he will always hold a special place in my heart.

Mr.. vokey was a lovely man, though he didn’t invent/create the screech in. He was a great embassador though. May he rest in peace

Most sincere condolence to Marilyn and the entire Vokey family. Merle’s passing is surely a great loss to all the community to which he contributed so much time, effort ,talent and genuine spirit. His memory will be cherished and long remembered. Ray & Marie

There are not enough words to describe all of the good that Uncle Myrle was. He was remarkable in every respect- husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and a mentor. He achieved all levels of success in whatever he attempted. What a wonderful legacy for all of us to remember him by. To Aunt Marilyn and my cousins, be proud and happy for what he was. He will rest in peace.

Forever grateful for the joy, laughter and song that Myrle brought to our lives. More than 40 years ago we all first met through our volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross Society and the slogan, “Friends for Life” still holds true. Marilyn, although we are out of town and unable to be there today, know you are close in our hearts as we think of your entire family during this time.

Marilyn and all the Vokey family

Marilyn and family,
Pam and I are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Myrle .He was a wonderful mentor and leader and friend to those of us who devoted our careers to the professional development of teachers in Atlantic Canada. We remember his music, his stories and his humanity. He inspired PEI and NB to create ceremonies resembling a Screech In. Neither really made the grade!
I hope that it bring some comfort to know how well Myrle was loved across Atlantic Canada.. We will miss him and hold his spirit in our bank of wonderful memories.

To Marilyn and the entire Vokey family, I send my thoughts and prayers, as you grieve and cope with your loss of Myrle, and as you celebrate him too!
One moment comes to mind: I was so grateful for Myrle’s immediate willingness, after being contacted on my behalf by Reg (Bonnell), to step in and be our keynote speaker in PEI, due to a last-minute cancellation of the keynote professional development speaker for a district-wide PD Day. quite a number of years ago. His warmth, wisdom, and generosity of spirit, were greatly appreciated by attendees and organizers alike.
My condolences.

Marilyn and Family,
Sadie and I were so sorry to hear the sad news of MYRLE’s passing. Our first encounter with Myrtle goes back many years ago when he gave both our first teaching positions. Little did we know that later we would become colleagues and friends.
Hoping that the memories you hold dearly, and the support of family and friends will help get you through the difficult days ahead.
Thinking of you,

Not all underground mining veins of Bell Island were rich iron ore; some were pure diamond. How else to explain the spectacular arc of our adored Myrle.

Marilyn and the Vokey Family
Sincere condolences on Myrle’s passing. He was a wonderful person who will be missed by many. May he rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Marilyn, and family.
I first met Myrle at MUN in the early 60s and at the beginning of May 1965, in my graduation year, had the enjoyable experience of driving with Myrle to Norris Point (my home town) as Myrle was taking up a substitue teacher position there for May and June. Our paths crossed on many occasions in future years but most memorable are the last 15 years or so of the Tanglers Group of Rotary where Myrle and Marilyn always played a big part in our yearly Lobster Parties and Christmas Visitations and Party. After dinner, whatever the season, it wasn’t long before the Myrle led traditional music and entertainment turned to the classic western sing-along in which everyone participated and loved. We both have wonderful memories of those happy times. Thanks for that!

Marilyn & Family,
Sorry we can’t be there with you and your family but our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.
Treasure you memories as they will be a great source of strength. in the future..

Dear Marilyn,
I am sorry to have read of Myrle’s passing. I have many fond memories of time spent with Myrle during my first teaching years. I was so very fortunate to have Myrle as my superintendent and his guidance and understanding was very much appreciated. He was always there to listen and to advise, and his kindness and humor did so much to relieve the anxiety and naivety of a young teacher. I very soon considered him a friend and was delighted when he agreed to be M C at our wedding. Jack joins with me in extending sincere sympathy to you and your family. May you all take comfort in the wonderful memories which Myrle made with each of you!

Keith and family, I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad . He was an amazing man and reading through all of his accomplishments really shows the love and pride he had for his family and his home.
His legacy will live on and his name spoken proudly for many years to come.

Jennifer(Mike), Keith, and all the Vokey Family,
My heart breaks for you in the loss of your Dad. He was a larger than life presence, whose humour and musical talent will remain in the hearts of many. Continue to sing his songs, tell his stories, laugh, and shed all the tears. The “greater the love, the greater the grief.” Thinking of you all.

A rare one! A good one! A big loss to so many – but of course, especially to you, his family. I am thinking of you and what this will mean for you. I know you will have many many memories to keep Myrle alive in your hearts. He joins the league of “absent friends” to whom I will raise my glass!

Dear Marilyn and family,
Our sincere condolences to you all at this very sad time. Our thoughts are with you..

We first met Merle through music and song and mutual friends some 25 years ago. He was a fabulous communicator of both, a great musician who lit up a room every time he picked up a guitar or an accordion. We shared his love of country music , (prior to 1965 even better!) and loved playing it with him on many memorable occasions at home and in Florida over the years. We are saddened to hear of his passing. Our sincere condolences to Marilyn and her family who will feel the loss of his vibrant personality and presence most of all.

Marilyn & the Vokey family.
Cathy & I wish to express our sincere & deepest sympathy to you & the Vokey family on Myrle’s passing.

There are not sufficient words to describe Myrle’s life and his contributions to all those who had the fortune to know him. His legacy will live on forever.

My main connection with Myrle was music. Myrle & I performed at many events, family & friends gatherings. For over three years we entertained “Come From Away’s” for a tourism company that brought people to our Province. We just didn’t provide music but educated them with the true meaning of our Newfoundland culture. As everyone knows Myrle was a specialist & proud Newfoundlander in our Newfoundland culture. Myrle’s stories, his music & dynamic presence will always be remembered.
Greatly missed but Always in our Hearts.

From this lake to the rock, our thoughts are with you. Myrle lived a life of incredible accomplishments, but none so great as his beautiful family. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, reminding us of the importance of family community, and the simple joys of life. His gentle nature, genuine kindness, and true love for his family and friends will live on in every life he touched.
Sending our love and hugs

Marilyn and Family,
So sorry to hear of Myrle’s passing. He was a great friend of Mom and Dad’s. I have lots of memories of the times together. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.

Marilyn and Family.
My heartfelt condolences on your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Myrle when I was Executive Director of the Canadian School Boards Association. His insightful input into our discussions ensured that all perspectives were taken into account when making decisions. But it was his love of music and joy of life that is most remembered. The highlight of our annual conventions was always the after-hours informal music sessions where he was able to share songs from the island. He will be greatly missed.

Sincere condolences!

Marilyn and family,

Thank you for sharing Myrle with our family, with his colleagues, and with visitors and tourists to his cherished home , Newfoundland. Myrle reminded all of us of the importance of music and laughter in our lives. He reminded us to be proud of our legacy as Newfoundlanders. After an evening with Myrle , everything seemed a bit brighter in our lives. Good food, good music and good laughs. What more could you want. He was important to so many people and that included our Dad, Henry Gosse. They shared a love for music and spent hours enjoying treasured songs and reminiscing about Bell Island where our very large families shared countless celebrations that began and ended with music. Myrle gave our father’s eulogy and everyone in attendance was moved by his eloquence, and his determination to honour our Dad’s legacy. So we will remember with both love and gratitude, our cousin Myrle. Full of life and full of love. He brought brightness and joy to so many.

All my condolences to the Vokey family I have the honour to interact with Myrle, When I worked at Canadian Red Cross in the 70s. Also condolences on behalf of my late father Norman Winter who was the commissioner of the Red Cross at the time.

I first met Mr. Vokey when he was the Superintendent of All Saint’s Anglican School in South River, Conception Bay North. He was a regular visitor to our school and could be a very imposing figure to a young five year old.
On one particular day in 1970, damage was sustained to the boys washroom of our school. Mr. Vokey was summoned to investigate and search out the person or persons responsible.
I recall sitting across from him for what felt like the interrogation of the century. He soon realized I was not the guilty party and sent me back to class.
Fast forward to the summer of 1999. I was a member of the Glovertown Detachment of the RCMP when, on one particular occasion, I encountered Mr. Vokey on the TCH for a speeding violation.
I immediately recognized him and it took me back to 1970. We shared a great laugh regarding the story and I told him how much he had been respected. He was humbled and continued on his way. No ticket issued.

We were glad we got to meet and chat with him in many rinks around the Eastern Avalon when Sam and Caden were Teammates and opponents. As you celebrate a long life, so well lived, and so deserving of celebration, may all the wonderful memories be a blessing at this time. God Bless.

To Marilyn and the extended Vokey family
Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of a most sincere friend and gallant Christian soldier, ex: Captain Merl Vokey. We spent many occasions together over our long years of service to the C.L.B. at dinners, parades, camps, concerts, and inspections. I will miss his company, his many stories and music. I know that he has contributed greatly to the longevity of our Brigade, now 133 years old, and inspired many of our leaders. While the last post has sounded, our commander in Chief will find a place for him among the ranks in heaven. May he rest in peace and one day rise in glory
J. Adrian Heffernan (Colonel) M.S.M

Dear Marilyn & Family,
I am saddened by the news of Myrle’s passing. We met many years ago, through my dear friend Peter Forbes. I have always appreciated his welcoming my son Bradley, on his first trip to NL:, which led to Bradley’s meeting and marrying Kerri. I will never forget the incredible reception in your home, following Brad & Kerri’s wedding in St. John’s. He was a gifted comedian and musician and probably the best story teller I ever met. Godspeed Myrle!

Krista, Jennifer and Family.,
Sorry to hear of the passing of your loved one.

Your father was a strong and genuine voice in our province. My enduring memory i of. him is a time when he single- handedly captivated an auditorium full of K-6 students at Bishop Feild with his talented story telling A Dad to be proud of.

Dear Marilyn and family:

We are so very sorry to know your enormous loss..
What an extraordinary , rich life Myrle lived! Our hearts reach out to you during this time of great sadness. May you be comforted by the love of family and friends. Love and prayers from your Bonaventure neighbours.
Jane Leibel and Peter Williams

Marilyn,
We are so very saddened to hear of Myrle’s passing. He brought joy to everyone who knew him. Growing up, we could always tell when Myrle had arrived at a party, based on the laughter coming from the front room. Reading the beautiful tribute to his life and legacy brought a smile to my lips, and a tear to my eye. Thinking of all of you at this difficult time.

Marilyn and Family,
We are so sad to hear of Myrle’s passing. I have many wonderful memories of him visiting Mom & Dad, there was always music and a sing song with each visit. Cherish your many great memories and know we are thinking of you all at this very sad time.

Marilyn and extended family of Myrle
He was an iconic figure in the Province and was an inspiring figure to many – his sense of humour –wit and general all round pleasant disposition were wonderful traits of great character-
God gave him a long life –some will say not long enough – but these issues are beyond our human comprehension.
He used his allotted time wisely and for good purpose .
In his day and generation Myrle Vokey made a difference to many and will be fondly remembered by those whom he met on the road of his life
He is now at rest and may that rest be peaceful
Godspeed Myrle

To Marilyn and Vokey family
I am saddened to hear of Myrle’s passing I played hockey with Myrle at MUN in the 1950s. We recently made contact at the Beaches Accordion Festival at Eastport. He compacted a lot in one lifetime and impacted many. The memories and music will linger. As Wordsworth expressed it “The music in my heart I bore,
Long after it was heard no more”.

Marilyn and family
I was shocked when I saw Myrle’s obituary online. I am so sorry for the loss of such a wonderful husband, dad and poppy.
I always remember you and Myrle always playing the guitar and singing. You both had beautiful voices. My favorite song you sang was Bread and Fishes.
I can remember the kids were so small the last time I saw them it was on ferryland street. You were only a couple of houses down from Selby’s and Anita’s.
I remember Myrle as a kind and compassionate man and him singing on all the special occasions.
You have a wonderful family and I’m sure they will all help you get through this difficult time in your life. It is so hard to say goodbye to your spouse the person your whole life evolved around.
Please know that I am thinking of you and all the family as you say good bye to a wonderful caring man.
Rest in Peace Myrle
Karen Bond. Was (Vokey)

Dear marilyn and Family, many hearts are saddened by the news of Meryl‘s passing but many souls have been lifted up by his presence during a lifetime of love shared so abundantly with all of you and others.. My deepest condolences to all of you!

. I am two months younger than Meryl and although we did not meet until well into our adulthood lives, he left an indelible mark on me and so many others. Meryl was like a brother to me. We shared a professional interest in education, and an undying love for music, songs and stories, all of which Meryl mastered.

Meryl was many beautiful things which will rest in the hearts and soul’s of all who knew him. His whole life was a testimony to education and teaching. Presented “ on a quilt of love. “ To me he was the kind of teacher that Rabbi Stostack Spoke of when he said:

Teacher

“I do not simply teach the mind

I reach the heart and when I reach the heart

I touch the soul

To those who say two generations hence what shall I be

If but a distant memory I respond

Though the mind fades…………..Memories linger

Though the body fails……………….The spirit prevails

Though the scroll burns…………………….The letters dance in the air”

My deepest love to all of you

We are so sad to hear this news.

We have so many great memories of Myrle .
We loved it when mom and dad used to have “the crowd“ over for a get together when we’d come “home” for a visit.

It was always a highlight for Myrle to lead us all in songs all evening.
We also treasure that we have both Myrle and Marilyn (on video) singing at our wedding

He was a treasure to many and we are grateful to have been part of his life.

Myrle was a good friend during my time serving on school boards. He gave me much guidance when we were dealing with education reform and presented me with a certificate for my service during this challenging time in the education era. I remember Myrle, (my only sister’s name) you and the children so well. We were neighbours on Ferryland St. and our daughter, Lesley, played with Krista and Tonya. I recall Keith being such a sweet, quiet boy and at that time Jennifer was the baby. It is wonderful you have your children and grandchildren around you. Notwithstanding the fact that the enumerable memories that Myrle created for all of you will be with you forever. Enjoy them for the priceless reminiscences they are. He was the best pop I could ever ask for. I will always remember everything he’s ever done for me, from coming to every hockey game and paying me to score! and as little as just giving me a chocolate bar. I will never forget pop and will think about him everyday for the rest of my life.

Sending my deepest sympathies. May you be comforted by the memories and love surrounding you.

Thinking of you,
