It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of our sweet mother, grandmother, wife, sister and dear friend, Nancy after a courageous and short battle with cancer.
Leaving behind to mourn, her husband Joe Whelan, whose unwavering support made her journey as bearable as possible; her son Joe Whelan (Wendy) – children Kenzie, Alex and Joey; daughter Dodi Todd (ex Mark), children Charlie & Theo; daughter Dana Tucker (Cory) – children Riley & Coryssa; son Peter Whelan (Gill) – children Peter, Hunter & Max.
Nancy is predeceased by her parents Richard & Ethel Squires, and her brother Rich. She is survived by her siblings Rose, Dianne, Harry (Jackie), Lynn, Susan, Michelle (Clint), Mike, Monique; the most wonderful Whelan clan, and her many nieces and nephews, and friends.
Nancy came into the world October 24, 1950, a fiery third daughter of 10. She grew up in St. Philips, and didn’t stray far from home – raising her family that she was so proud of, in Paradise. She devoted her younger years to being the best stay at home mom. She was a wonderful baker, a Christmas enthusiast and the most fun mom ever. She pursued post-secondary education later in life, worked in accounting and government, and attained a number of dear friends she cherished seeing to this day. No doubt her charisma and hard work ethic made her an unforgettable colleague. She volunteered in the community for various organizations such as the Catholic Women’s League, and girl guides and could be counted on to whip up 20 or so cheerleading skirts in a heartbeat, or whatever it was her kids needed. She will be remembered for her profound kindness, indelible strength, humor, legendary turkey dinners, singing while driving, lifelong fitness for fun, and her greatest joy of spending time with her family. She was often reminded that her kids and grandkids successes were a direct result of the unwavering love and support of the most incredible mom and grandmother.
Nancy had a zest for life and a spark that lit up every room she entered bringing joy to all those around her. She was fiercely proud of her family, and her treasured grandkids. Even in the last 18 months when we now realize how truly ill she was, she checked in about their games and marks, and friends. She cherished her calls from her grandkids in Alberta, and Nova Scotia. Her demeanor was noticeably improved speaking of them, getting a visit, or hearing from them. She always had the biggest hugs and smiles for her loved ones. If anyone was lucky enough to hear her stories of growing up, she spoke so fondly of her siblings – each one holding a piece of her heart in a different way. Her mark on this world was great, and the void she is leaving behind, immeasurable
Cremation has taken place.

I hope this message finds you. I was in the hospital room with Nancy when she learned she couldn’t be released and when she excitedly learned she could go home. I lost my own Mother in December and watching her make hard decisions and accepting her fate was surreal. I had a beautiful discussion with her about the bravery of a mother and the unconditional love that really does endure past this world. I understand the impact of losing a beloved mother and grandmother. I extend my compassion concern and prayers. A beautiful soul indeed.
