Obituary
Nicholas Theodore Halpert passed suddenly in his home under the full moon on Thursday, May 7th to reunite with his beloved wife Sophia (Meyer Halpert). Born in Kentucky in 1949, he arrived in Newfoundland with his parents in the early 60s. In 1968 his father, anthropologist and folklorist Dr. Herbert Halpert founded the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA). It was at Memorial University where Nicholas, naturally drawn to academia, studied Philosophy.
The 71 years of his life were full of adventure, travel, and experience. Nicholas was a talented musician as a young man roved through vibrant music scenes across Canada. In recent years with his unmistakable, booming voice and razor-sharp wit, Nicholas enthusiastically shared anecdotes and meals with those close to him. Nicholas was supportive, generous, and always happy to celebrate a special occasion. His terrible puns were well known and loved in his presence and will be fondly remembered in his absence. Being a grounded person, he welcomed silence. Nicholas was a free-spirit and spent long afternoons in nature among the trees.
Predeceased by his dear parents Herbert and Violetta Halpert, and his wife Sophia Meyer (Halpert), Nicholas leaves to mourn his stepdaughters Maggie Meyer (Yann Edwards), Jessie Meyer and Sara Meyer (George Ingerman), his two young grandchildren Alice and Max on whom he doted, his treasured dog Bandit, his close friends Stephanie, Harold, Jim, Don, and all his buddies at Ben’s Pub.
A memorial celebration of Nicholas’ life will be held for all his friends and loved ones when it is safe to gather together again.

So very sad to hear of Nick’s passing. He was a deeply spiritual and loving man. He had a wonderful voice and sound with his guitar. My condolences to his family. He was very devoted to his family and will be present always in the spirit of Love.

Met Nick when we were young and soon became friends. . Over the years we only saw each other now and then but our friendship remained strong.. I will miss Nick as I am sure will all of his family and friends.

Fondly remember the love of his life Sophia and his mother Leti whom we had developed a loving and caring relationship with over the years.

It does not seem possible! I was only chatting with him a few weeks ago on facebook…but had known him for many decades through his mom, Letti, and lovely wife, Sophie. Oh my, I am very sad. He could be so damn funny! My kindest thoughts of sympathy to his many friends, step kids and grandkids on the loss of a wise and creative person.
I am so sorry to hear the news. I saw him a couple of weeks ago in Domiinion. We had a lovely chat as we stood in line. Nick was always ready for a good chat. Hugs to all the family.

Our condolences on this sudden loss. We always loved running in to Nick while walking in Pippy Park, which was often, the dry quips and mutual love of the peace of nature.
