It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Nora Regina Squires—a woman whose kindness, laughter, and generous heart touched everyone she met. Nora was born in Paradise on February 2, 1944, and passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s.
Nora was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Blanche Murphy (née Hussey), and her brothers James, Leonard, Stan, Chris, Lawrence, and Carl.
Leaving to mourn are her children: Jean (George) Squires, Patsy (Jim) Whitten, and Rick (Colleen) Squires; her grandchildren: Deirdre, Amy (Shalin), Ryan (Denika), Lacy (Cedric), Amanda (David), and Brooke (Will); her great-grandchildren: Dominic, Jaxon, Emilia, Logan, and Jaci; her sisters: Mary (Jim), Daphne (Charles), and Debbie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
The family would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Sharon Jones, whose exceptional care, friendship, and compassion brought Mom so much joy and laughter over the last several months.
Mom’s greatest joy came from being with her family and those she loved. Her generous spirit, loyalty, wonderful sense of humor, and easy-going nature made her a pleasure to be around. She was grateful for even the smallest kindness and had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Whether sharing a cup of tea, telling a funny story, or simply listening with genuine interest, Mom had a gift for making people feel important.
Although Alzheimer’s disease changed many things over the past five years, it never took away Mom’s loving heart. Her smile, gentle spirit, and deep love for her family remained until the very end. We were blessed that she never lost the essence of who she was. She always knew her family and close friends and continued to bring joy, love, and laughter into our lives right up to her final day.
Later in life, Mom discovered a calling that perfectly reflected who she was. Through practicing and teaching Reiki, she shared compassion, wisdom, hope, and healing with many people. One of her students, Arlene Penny, beautifully captured the legacy Mom leaves behind:

Her warmth, generosity, and beautiful spirit left an imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her. I know that her love, her teachings, and the light she shared will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. What a beautiful legacy.”
The family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Admirals Coast Retirement Home for their exceptional care and kindness during the nearly five years Mom lived there. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the staff of Meadow Creek Retirement Home for their compassion and support during the short time she resided there.
Heartfelt thanks are also extended to the staff of the Emergency Department and 5 North B at the Health Sciences Centre for the compassion, dignity, and support they showed Mom and our family during her final days.
Mom measured her life not by what she owned or accomplished, but by the people she loved. Nothing brought her greater happiness than having her family together, and nothing made us happier than being with her.
Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, on Monday, August 3rd from 2–4 p.m. and 7–9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the chapel at Carnell’s on Tuesday, August 4th at 11 a.m. Interment will follow immediately at St. Thomas of Villanova Roman Catholic Cemetery, 2292 Topsail Road, Conception Bay South.
Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever in our hearts.
Her love remains the greatest gift she leaves behind.
Due to a serious scent allergy, the family kindly request that all visitors refrain from wearing scented products.
As an expression of sympathy, Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Jean, Patsy, Rick and Family. I am so sorry to hear of your moms passing. Nora and I worked together at School Tax. She was always a very sweet, pleasant person and a pleasure to be around and work with. Whenever we met over the years she was always the same way. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. RIP Nora.

So saddened to hear of Nora’s passing. We hadn’t spoken for years but Nora was there for me years ago when I needed support as a struggling single parent. She even offered me a complimentary reiki session, or a ride to get some groceries- what an angel!! I first met Nora doing courses at The Lantern- her calm, quiet demeanour and wise advice drew me to her. Well done, Nora. Your work on earth is done. Rest now in the arms of the lord. Deepest sympathy to all the family.

I worked with Nora for many years at The School Tax Authority. We had many great conversations and I found her to be a woman of great wisdom. So sorry to hear of her passing. My condolences to her loved ones

Nora was the very best. We spent many nights playing cards, having a laugh and always a feed. And weekends at the cabin were always lots of fun.
We will do it all again one day when we all meet again.

May her spirit, kindness, and gentle presence live on in all of us who were fortunate enough to know her.
My Reiki weekends with Nora remain some of my most cherished memories. I had lost my grandmother two years before meeting her, and I would often say that visiting Nora felt like visiting my Nan. She never let anyone leave without insisting on a cup of tea, a piece of hard cheese, and a ginger cookie to follow.
The day she met my daughter, Bridget, I’ll never forget the light and love in her eyes as she looked at her. It was such a beautiful moment.
Her thoughtful gifts, her wisdom, and the stories she shared are treasures I will carry with me always.
In grief, one of the most powerful forms of healing is hearing the stories of the woman who was a mother, sister, grandmother, and dear friend—seeing the lives she touched, the love she gave, and the legacy she leaves behind. Nora shaped so many hearts, and that love will continue through all who knew her.
