Olive Elkins

Olive Jeanette Elkins (née Vardy) passed away peacefully on April 26th at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s, surrounded by the love of her children. Born on March 10^th, 1935, in Hickman’s Harbour, Trinity Bay, Olive was predeceased by her parents, James and Belle (Marsh) Vardy; her beloved husband of 66 years, Arthur Elkins; siblings Dulcie Brown (Jim), Sarah, Wilfred (Geraldine), Bill (Nell), Ralph, Jim (Edith), Clyde, and Scott. She leaves to cherish her memory her three children: Brenda (Peter), Sandra (Gary), and John (Jennifer); seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers Ross (Ruby) and Charl (Pat); sisters-in-law Lorraine, Charlotte, and Barb; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Olive lived a rich and active life. Together with Art, she raised their family in Corner Brook, where she contributed to the family business and later enjoyed a career in retail. Olive was a dedicated member of the United Church and was especially supportive of newcomers in the immigrant community. She was also an enthusiastic bowler, participating in tournaments at both the provincial and national levels. Upon retirement, Olive and Art settled in Flat Rock, where she embraced new friendships, enjoyed chatting over coffee at A&W, and delighted in the occasional bingo game. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal funeral service. Those wishing to honour her life can consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or your favorite charity.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Andrea Singleton and the staff at Cambridge Estates, as well as Dr. Chris Drover, the staff of the Emergency Department, and the dedicated nursing team of 4^th Floor East at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, for their exceptional and compassionate care during Olive’s final days.
