Owen Joseph Crossan passed away suddenly but peacefully on Wednesday, January 7th at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community.
Predeceased by parents Bernard & Mary, brother Brian, all of Scotland, and parents-in-law Samuel & Florence Cooper.
Leaving to mourn are wife Pam (nee Cooper), daughters Hilary (Justin), Maureen, and Heather (Chris), son Neal, brother Charles (Blanche) of France, sister-in-law Gloria Crossan of Scotland, brothers-in-law Harold (Nancy), Eric (Debbie), John (Lynn), special family in Virginia, and an extended circle of family and close friends.
Owen lived a full life. Born in a third-generation farmhouse in county Donegal, Ireland, he spent two fondly-remembered childhood years in Australia with his family, before settling back in Glasgow, Scotland, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Strathclyde. His engineering degree brought him to, in his words, “the great metropolis of Port-aux-Basques” in August 1967. He eventually moved to St. John’s where he worked with the Telephone Company before branching out on his own and building houses across the island. It was here he met his wife, Pamela, and they raised their daughter, Hilary.
He had a voracious love of travel that took him, Pam and Hilary all over the world. Being an engineer, he remembered every fact and figure along the way. His joint love of work and travel afforded him many great opportunities, including contracts in London, the U.S., Cuba, and the Azores with the United States Air Force. Despite all his travels, he most loved spending months at their home in Virginia, sitting by the water, binoculars in hand, reading the numbers of every Navy ship that passed.
Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, from 5-8 pm on Thursday, February 12th and from 10am-1pm on Friday, February 13th.
A funeral service will be held in the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 2 pm on Friday, February 13th.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson Society Newfoundland & Labrador or another charity of one’s choice may be made in Owen’s memory.

Pam and family, i feel sad for your loss. I only met Owen a few times, but I have the fondest memories of your beautiful, welcoming home at our book club Christmas gatherings. The few times owen dropped by to greet us, it felt warm and gracious.

Although many years have passed since the last time I saw Owen, when we were both younger men — a relative concept, I’ll allow — our paths would occasionally cross at the Duke. My father, Ron Reardon, worked with Mr.. Crossan at the Tellephone Company. Dad spoke very highly of him and his work ethic.
I also taught Maureen at Our Lady of Mercy. She was such a lovely girl.

I met Owen as small child 30 years ago when my dad went to work with Regency Management and I have many fond memories of coming home from school and hearing a big belly laugh before I even opened the door, I knew Owen was in for a tea and I was going to have a long conversation. Even as a young child, he spoke to me in a mature way about my interests, what I was reading and what I wanted to be. I remember when he became very email savvy and he’d send e-cards that he thought were funny so I could share them with dad who hadn’t quite figured out how the Internet worked yet.
I loved getting little surprises trinkets from his travels and spent many a day pretending to do important office work on Logy Bay Road.
We fell out of touch in more recent years but in his spirit of generosity, Owen was a supporter of my oldest son in our Autism Society fundraising efforts and I am so grateful to have known such a wonderful person throughout my life.

I am so very sorry and heart broken to hear of Owens passing. He was a beautiful person with a kind heart. We would have many conversations in the dining room at Kenny’s Pond and he would always make it a point to ask how my dad was doing.
He will be greatly missed.
