Passed peacefully away in his sleep, our dear brother Paul, age 61.  Predeceased in 1993 by his mom who he absolutely adored, Marjorie (Halley) Murphy, and in 2010, by his dad, former mayor John Murphy, to whom he was totally devoted.

Missing him but with many happy memories are his sisters Jane Phillips and her husband Kermit, Karen Murphy, Trish Greene and her husband David, as well as special dear friend who was like a sister, Karen Newman and her husband Randy, Paul’s friend.

Uncle Paul also had a very special place in the hearts of his nieces and nephews:  Paddy Greene (Anna) and Katie Greene (Collin Goyman and baby Benson), Teddy Skiffington (Emma) and Halley Skiffington (Scott), Grant and Leah Phillips, Jeffrey Furneaux (Heather and Malia, Audrey, Halle, and Shea), John Furneaux (Lesley and Nash and Piper), Heather Furneaux, James Furneaux (Tiffany), and Karissa Furneaux (Lee) and all his cousins in the Kent and FitzGerald families.

Paul was a loving brother, a funny uncle, and a teller of stories. From a young age Paul was happiest when on the ocean. To this end, Paul created his own successful life as a well-respected tuna fisherman and, in recent years, as captain of Ocean Quest Adventures  – a position he enjoyed immensely.

Paul was a lover of animals and the very best cat and dog sitter! Most of all, he was a truly amazing and loyal friend.  He was always the go-to for friends and family in need. There wasn’t a thing he couldn’t fix and he was always there with his kind heart. He enjoyed many nights at cabins with his dear friends especially Paul and Maureen Gorman, Bill and Connie Fitzgerald, Pat and Brenda Tucker, Sean Noah, Paul and Janice Carew, Nelson Newman, Dean and Cindy Whelan, Bob and Janet Kent and Neil King and Maureen Baker. He was truly loved by all and will be dearly missed.

Til we meet again dear brother.

On Thursday, March 3, from 7-9 pm, Paul’s family would like to welcome to Carnell’s any of his close friends who want to share many funny and heartwarming stories. Due to these COVID times, this will just be a small gathering. We will have a celebration of his life on Friday, March 4th at 11:30 AM from Carnell‘s Chapel. Vax passes and masks required for both.  The service will be livestreamed for those who wish to join virtually, with the link available on Paul’s obituary page at www.carnells.com.  Donations in his memory may be made to the SPCA.

Don and Sarah Osmond

My deepest condolences. I met Paul while working with Ocean Quest – he was so kind and a total joy to work with. His love for being on the water was infectious to all those aboard.

Paul was our best friend for 30 years. There are no words for the depth of our sorrow but his memories will sustain us in the coming weeks, months and years. Our hearts are broken. RIP Murf until we meet again. ❤️

Sitting with Paul up top on the mermaid while we waited for divers in the water was a very peaceful memory I have with him. He was so happy to chat about the ocean and his time as a fisherman. It will not be same to board the mermaid without him on it. My deepest condolences.

Working with Paul at Oceanquest was truely a pleasure. I could listen to his fishing stories all day long. My deepest of condolences.

Karen, Trish, and Jane. My deepest sympathies to your and your families on the loss of your beloved Paul. . Sudden death is such a shock, especially in one so young. Thinking of you all now and in the months ahead. Your hearts must be broken..

Paul and I had some great experiences together back in the 80’s. Camping at Grosse Mourne, boating on Conception Bay. Always a smile and a story. All our thoughts and happy stories from New Jersey. Lisa & Chris

Paul was an amazing guy, upbeat and always full of conversation on our drives from St. Johns to the wharf for Ocean Quest dive trips. Always ready with a timmies coffee and a donut. We were lucky to have him with us! My thoughts are with all those who knew and loved him

My deepest condolences to Paul’s family and to all the team at Ocean Quest! 😢

I met Paul while working with ocean quest and we had the best chats on the mermaid! He was such a welcoming and friendly person. I am so sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with his family.

Trish, Dave & family,

We didn’t know Paul personally but know the shock you must feel. He will be deeply missed by all of you. Please accept our heartfelt condolences, and take care.

To Paul’s family,
Sincere condolences on Pauls passing. I had the greet privilege of spending many days with him on the water chasing the giant tuna we were all so obsessed with since I was a child. And we spent just as many days talking about it! We shared a love of everything tuna related and were both collectors or old tackle. He told me many stories of growing up on the water and how he got into the fishing. I also remember the days of the old “Sea Hunter” chasing tuna around the bay. Paul was often our first call when myself and Dad needed another hand aboard the boat with us and over the years we accumulated many stories of the the ones we landed and the ones that got away. He was as good a friend to my father and often called him over the winter to talk tuna and plan the upcoming season. He spoke so often if his family, and especially his sisters of whom he was so fond of. He was a fixture in Long Pond chasing the sea trout in his small when there were no tuna around. He’d always call us when he saw the first tuna of the season. He was a large presence in our lives and we’ll miss him dearly. Take care.

It’s with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Paul Murphy. Paul was a great guy to be around. He like myself loved fishing especially Tuna. His concern
for the guys he represented far outweighed personal gain. This time of year we should be discussing the up coming season. Tuna and Salmon.
You will be missed
Calm seas my friend

To Paul’s family and friends

Offering you my condolences on Paul’s sudden passing.
He and I have shared and made many memories with our love of tuna fishing and being on the water. Many trips turned into adventures and stories larger than Paul could tell. He was a great boating enthusiast and an ambassador for the tuna fishery. I will miss sharing these times with him but am left with an abundance memories of this great guy and friend.

Dear Karen, Trish and Jane
I was sad seeing this obit in yesterday’s paper. Paul had a big warm heart, full of kindness. Any encounter with Paul, left me in a more positive mood. He had a good sense of humour, which he shared with ease, and he never spoke an unkind word of others. Too young to say good-bye. Thinking of you all.

The Murphy family, Paul was one of a kind. I spent quite a few years fishing tuna with Paul in Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. he was always there to do tuna favors, lend a hand and we always had a laugh with him telling his stories. I will miss his “yes byes”.
Deepest Condolences for his family.

Karen & Randy I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend Paul. Karen spoke of him fondly and his friendship with Randy often at work. Friends are truly the family we make for ourselves. Hugs.

Dear family and friends of Paul, my husband and I had the pleasure of meeting Paul at his cabin with the Kents many years ago. He was so pleasant and easy going. His friends always spoke of ‘Murph’ with great respect and love. He will be dearly missed. Carry his legacy in your hearts. God bless!

With our sincere condolences
Colleen Hanrahan and John Abbott

Very sad to hear about Paul’s passing. My sincere condolences to his family. My friend called and told me about him passing away. I didn’t know him well, but he made a lasting impression. When I read about the Tuna Fishing, the first thing came in my mind is when Paul and Ron Power took a few of us out fishing for Tuna. He had all of us fooled because he worked so hard to land the Tuna and when he brought it in, it was a bucket. I am so sure he will be missed an awful lot by his family and friends. I am deeply saddened by this news.

We are so very sorry to hear the sad news on losing Paul. Mom was very shocked to hear this news as were we all. He was always kind, warm and pleasant. A real gentleman. Sincere condolences to you all. May you take comfort in the happy memories you have of him.
Karen & Jerry, Nan Furneaux, Guy and Annette.

Trish, family, and Paul’s friends,
Please accept our condolences on Murph’s passing. While his life was relatively short in years, I hope there is consolation in that it was not short of experiences, good friends, and laughter.. Best thoughts for family and friends in this tough time.
Don and Frances Ash

Paul was ever the indestructible one in our youth. Afraid of nothing, strong when others were weak, clear-eyed when others were uncertain, practical when others were lost in detail…

I can only think of Paul as pillar, a constant, a force, a friend. There was simply no better person in an emergency and no better company for a laugh.

Not that we always agreed, oh no! 🙂 With his strength came a certainty of purpose that tested friendship at times. However that legendary stubbornness (if I may say) was always tempered with humor and caring that let you know the tension was temporary and the friendship was forever.

Such qualities are not easily found in life. I saw less of Paul in recent years and our friendship, though now distant, was warm. When we met, we smiled.

Paul, Godspeed.

Had many good times with Paul. Big man. Big loss

My sincere condolences to the Murphy family on Paul’s sudden passing. I have many fond and fun memories of my brother Paul and your Paul (“Murph”) over the years, particularly weekends spent at Thorburn Lake. Paul always had a smile on his face and was more than eager to share an entertaining story or two…. and usually had beagle in tow! He was a great friend to my brother and to our family. He will be missed.

Trish,Karen,Jane & Families i am very sorry to hear about Paul ‘s passing. . I have many happy memories
working with him at the Arcade . My deepest condolence .

To my cousins Karen, Trish & Jane. Having grown up around Paul (always young Paulie to me) I knew him as one of the strongest, kindest, happiest and funniest of family members. He was so good to my mom, his Auntie Peg, after dad passed that it made living far away from home a little easier for me. I would see him occasionally when visiting for Christmas or summer vacations and he always had that same sparkle in his eyes, a yarn to spin and an act of kindness to share. His big heart, free spirit and love of all things outdoors were evident to anyone lucky enough to have met him.
Paulie, may your soul rest peacefully together with Auntie Marge and Uncle John.

Dear Trish, Karen, Jane and families
We are heartbroken that our dear friend Paul has passed away so suddenly, we can only imagine your shock and grief. Paul was a true, loyal friend and we loved him dearly. He could handle a boat, cook a meal, fix any motor, vacuum a cat, tell a great story. We will miss your brother and are so lucky to have many great memories of our times together.
Rest In Peace, Murph

Dear Karen, Trish and Jane, I am so sad about Paul. I have vivid memories of growing up with him on Winter Avenue and in Manuels. In adulthood, he marched to his own drum and found his niche in life. We should all be so lucky to have as large a circle of friends and to leave this life doing exactly what we love, in Paul’s case, being at his cabin with friends. He will be dearly missed. Love to you all.

Jane, Trish, Karen and families I am shocked to see Pauls obit. I thought of Paul always and the many, many laughs we had at the Arcade, I write this now an smile at the crazy , silly things he did. Oh boy I have stories but to long to write here. I’ll always remember him as such a kind and gentle man but, more importantly, as a wonderful friend to my father. Always there when you needed him; whether that be help fixing something or just to have a few laughs.
