Philip Budden

May 20, 1956 to February 3, 2022

Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Philip Budden. He passed peacefully away at home surrounded by his beloved family on Feb 3, 2022 at the age of 65.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Joy (Whitten), adoring daughters Krista and Ashlee, sons in law Brad Donovan and Karl St. Croix, and his treasured grandchildren, Lila Donovan, Charlie and Vivienne St. Croix. Also leaving to mourn, his sister Elizabeth and brother in law John Coleman, and nephew William; father in law Reginald Whitten; sisters in law Janice and husband Dan Fallon, Jodi Whitten and husband Tim Sutton, nieces Katelyn Hiscock (Gavin), Deann Locke; nephews Matthew Fallon, Colin Grimes; and lifelong friends Maurice and Mary Bruce. He will also be missed by a large circle of family and friends in Newfoundland and Florida, coffee buddies and business associates.

Predeceased by his parents Reginald and Lillian (Garland) Budden, sister Phyllis Marello and mother in law Joyce Whitten.

Raised in Dunville, Placentia Bay he loved reflecting on his fond memories of being raised there. He moved into St. John’s at the age of 16 to attend Memorial University and gained a B.Comm degree in 1977.  He joined Chester Dawe Ltd in 1979 and proceeded to build an immensely successful career in the construction and building supplies industry. He often said he never worked a day in his life, because he loved his career, and had the utmost respect for his employees and business associates. Retiring at the age of 49 when he sold his business, he spent all his winters on his boat in Florida, spending quality time with Joy, his close friends and his daughters, sons in law and grandchildren.  His most memorable trips were to Battle Harbour, Labrador, and Bimini, Bahamas. When the pandemic began, and travel ceased, the family began their new adventure at their cottage in Whitbourne.  Many special weekends and holidays over the next two years took place with his family, and the most treasured memories include side by side rides, boil ups, and stogging the fireplace with birch.  He enjoyed Christmas 2021 immensely, especially watching his grandchildren skate and play hockey on the pond.

Special thanks to Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Bussey, nurses April Adams and Ryan Quinlan, and all the compassionate and competent nurses at the Bliss Centre.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a celebration of his life will be planned for later this year.  Donations in his memory can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.

As a fiercely proud Newfoundlander, he would often say “Let me be a man and take it, when my dory fails to make it”.

Uncle Phil was an extremely generous man. He always supported me in my hockey endeavours and will always be remembered as a genuine, hard working man who had the best Christmas Eve gatherings. You will be missed.

Joy, Krista, Ashlee and family
Our sincerest condolences on the loss of your wonderful husband, dad, father-in-law and grand-dad. Phil was such a humble, kind, generous and insightful man. We always loved the opportunity to
have a chat with him. His positive attitude brightened many days. He will be dearly missed by many.

I met Phil when I was responsible for the advertising account for Chester Dawe in my capacity as a sales representative for The Telegram. Despite the fact he was the managing director and I was “just” a sales guy he treated me like I was his peer. I was brand new to the business world and he made me want to work harder and be better. Very sorry to hear about his passing.

Budden Family

I am deeply saddened to hear of Philip’s passing. He was a wonderful and kind person throughout his life. You have my sincerest condolences. Philip and I grew up in Dunville doing the things kids do such as biking, playing softball, and many games of cards on rainy days. In later years he was an enthusiastic mentor to me, when I was setting up a new venture. Knowing Philip and seeing the comments people have expressed, be proud that Philip’s passing will never take away the impact he has had on us all and in setting a standard that we we should all rise to.

Joy and family

I’d love to see him coming as we shared several passions including boats, cars and hockey and could go on for ever talking about either one.
He will be greatly missed…

So, so sorry to read this obituary. We were business acquaintances that developed into business friends. Phil was of strong character and a loyal friend. During his retirement I always looked forward to seeing him at Tim’s while holding court with his buddies. We all enjoyed hearing some city gossip and of course a good laugh.

Please accept my condolences and know my prayers and thoughts are with his family at this time.

To Mrs. Budden & Family,

My husband Paul and I were so saddened to learn of Mr. Budden’s passing. As we recently became neighbours, we did not get a true chance to get to know him, but he always offered a smile and a nod when we would see him on the back deck or in the driveway.

My godfather, Vern French, told us what wonderful friend and gentleman Mr. Budden was.

Please accept our most sincere condolences.

Dear Joy,

Captain Budden!
Deepest condolences to all family and many friends of Mr. Phil Budden. Your voyage was cut too short here on earth and I hope you are now planning new trips with friends and family that have gone before you. Calm seas Phil, as we reflect on the shared fond memories of the journey, the people along the way and those like you who made a positive impact and will always be remembered!

To the Budden Family,

Very sad to hear of Phil’s passing. I worked with Phil in his early days with Bank of Montreal. Many good memories and fun times!
In later years I remember Phil visiting his mother daily in Saint Luke’s Home. When Phil entered the home his personality was greater than life. His smile & interest in people was quite evident. After attending to his mothers needs Phil made it a point to go around and chat with as many of the tenants as possible and try and make their day brighter.! Weather it be a boating/ fishing story , supplies from Chester Dawe / construction job / or a lady baking bread / concern about her family needs , etc. Phil’ s personality had it in spades !
Keep those fond memories close of Phil.
Gone far to soon. Sincere condolences.

Joy & Family,
So saddened to hear of Phil’s passing. He was a great gentleman with a big heart and an even bigger smile. He loved his family and his work dearly. He was a great mentor to many and as previous writers have mentioned, a deal was a deal with Phil and didn’t require much more than a handshake. We certainly enjoyed our time with you in Florida. He dearly loved the water from his early days at Chester Dawe on the Hemmer Jane. Wishing him smooth waters on his final voyage. Our best wishes and condolences to the family. RIP.

Joy and family; Elizabeth and family,

Joy and Family
My sincere condolences to you and the Family. I was fortunate to have almost morning conversations at McDonalds with Phil and the boys until COVID. While we didn’t solve world problems we would talk about our youth, our careers, and politics amongst many other topics. I had a connection with him through a career at sea and we would talk about his love of his boats and the people and family who enjoyed that part of his life with him. He often spoke affectionately about his family especially his grandchildren and their extracurricular activities. Keep your memories close and he will always be a part of you. Gone too soon. Fair winds and following seas my friend.

To The Family.
So sorry to hear of Phil’s passing. We were good high school buddies. When we both started university, in 1975, we boarded together in a house on O’Dea Place., along with four other guys; you can imagine the fun and sometimes commotions we often had there. He was a very steady and focused fellow then, and it comes as no surprise to know that he led a highly successful business., and was a dedicated family man. RIP, my friend.

Our heartfelt condolences to Joy, Krista, Ashley, Elizabeth, John, and Willian and family.

To Mrs. Budden and family,
Our sincerest condolences on the passing of Phil. I first had the pleasure to meet him one stormy winter day checking boats while he was checking the Sea Princess. I was 15 and what has never left me since that day was how he treated and spoke to me like an equal and not a child or teen. Myself and my father spent many days helping him do an oil change, or pulling rubber gloves out of the generator intake so he’d have power when the grandkids showed up lol. Every second of it was an absolute pleasure. He was always anxious to have us aboard to show us whatever new vessel he had at the time because he knew we loved such things as much as he did. And looking back, I realize now it wasn’t the just the boats he loved, as much as it was the social aspect that came with it. He was quick to boil the kettle or offer a beer. And he’d always update us on how everyone in his family was doing and asking about ours before we got to talking boats. I’ll certainly miss running into him around the wharves and sending him pics of him proudly steaming up the bay.
One of the last times I saw him he “urged” me to get the teak done on my own boat lol. I think his words were “Ted! Your teak!” Take care. His presence in our lives will certainly be remembered with great fondness!

Joy, Krista, and Ashley. Our sincere condolences to all of you on the passing of your husband and dad and grandad. You guys have a lot of great memories of your trips together, weekends at the cabin and spending time at the rinks. Our prayers and thoughts are with you at the time. RIP Phil.
