With great sadness, we wish to extend our sincere condolences to Bill’s family and friends. Bill was a great member of our community here in Canso. He could often be seen walking to and from the hospital and just about everywhere else; even when someone would stop to ask if he needed a drive somewhere. We also frequently saw him with his nephew Don and Matt leaving for many trips around and out of our small town, or back home to visit his beloved Newfoundland. He was cherished by everyone he befriended during his time with us.

We will remember him for his smile and his kind words, and he will be missed by all of us who had the honor to call him friend. God speed and God bless. From Melissa & Kenny

I am so very saddened by Bills passing. Bill was such a dear friend of our family, and always there during my childhood and early adult years. Bill was a kind and gentle soul and will be missed in the hearts of many!

My condolences to all Bill’s friends and family!

This is a loss that is more than I can ever explain! I find myself crying at random times remembering the years we had with him, mostly my childhood & teenage years. All good memories! From the treats he would bring me to his trips around the bay, how he spoiled me with each birthday & holiday, waiting for his cab truck to roll in our driveway on Friday evenings to spend the weekend with us, his love for moose hunting & admirals beach, that time he ate a loaf of homemade bread because he thought that was supper due to too many beers, meals around the kitchen table, trips to ocean pond, basketball tournament sleepovers at his house in town because everyone was always welcome to stay, rides on the big red & towing slides, his laugh & love for story telling, & most of all the hugs that will be missed dearly.

He was one great man, healthcare worker who cared for others, a chosen uncle to us, my godfather and most of all a big part of our family! It saddens me that the last few years distance grew between us as he moved away but the memories will last a lifetime & we will continue to reminisce with story telling.

Love you always Godfather Bill! We hope there are many angels welcoming you at the gate & I know skipper will be sitting there in his rocking chair waiting for you ♥️🕊️ xo

From when I was a young child, Bill was such a huge part of my life. From every weekend staying at my parents house in Admirals Beach, every Friday bringing in those yummy Venice pizzas, to those big red bike rides (we spent more time stuck in the mud lol), Sunday boilups, falling asleep in the rocking chair EVERY evening, copying dad’s dress code (even if dad changed 10 times so would he lol), moose hunting and and Colinet Island he loved so much, laughing at the most pathetic things lol, always spending time with him at his cabin in Ocean Pond, stealing his booze and he would never know lol, living with him during my university years and having many friends stay with me lol, and just being a down to earth best friend to my family and I.
The past years we have lost touch when he moved away but our connection and email exchanges would always catch us up.
He will always be that one person who meant the world to me. Anyone who had the privilege to know Bill would agree that this man was far from original and the world lost a good guy but heaven gained an extraordinary angel.
He will always hold a special place in my heart ❤️

I am sadden to hear about Bill. My son Don and his partner Matthew have lost a great person in their lives, Bill was such a nice person and had a wonderful attitude towards life, he always cared for everyone and put himself last before others. I always enjoyed when bill and his “boys” (Don and Matthew) would come and visit me in Ontario every year. I have so many wonderful memories of Bill.

We will definitely miss him

My prayers and condolences are with my son and Matthew and all of Bill’s family and friends in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

Bill, Don and my son Matt always came to our house or cabin anytime bill came home to Newfoundland for a visit, we have so many good memories of Bill.

We are so grateful we had the apportunity to visit him in Canso this summer past 2022.

My Condolences go out to Don and Matt and all other family and friends of Bill Freeman

It is with a heavy heart and deepest sympathy that we give our condolences to the friends and family of “ Bill” – Phillip William Freeman.

I had the privilege of working several years with Bill as a fellow staff member of the Eastern Memorial Hospital in our village of Canso Nova Scotia. Not only was Bill a greatly respected professional and valued member of the medical team, but a well-loved friend to all who knew him. Bill, a highly skilled radiology technician, also generously gave much appreciated assistance to his colleagues ensuring that each patient he came in contact with was greeted with a friendly face and treated with care! Everyone who came into contact with Bill, from either a professional aspect or as a friend or an acquaintance, appreciated him for his calm, welcoming and reassuring manner!

With a twinkle in his eye and an affectionate grin, Bill used to talk about his adventures with his beloved nephew Don Freeman Di Stasi and his partner Mathew Power whom he referred to as “the boys” from his beloved province of Newfoundland!

A true Maritimer, Bill loved the sea and the outdoors! He seemed most at peace when out in a boat on the ocean fishing or exploring the many islands and shorelines. He would spend many happy hours “on the water” with Don and Matt relaxing and embracing the never-ending gifts of the ocean and would come back refreshed and tranquil from these interactions with nature and his companions.

Bill was one of those unique individuals who dedicated his life to serving and supporting all those with whom he came into contact with! His extensive career led him to all parts of Canada including years spent serving the indigenous residents who live above the Arctic Circle!

To his family and friends, we extend our sincere condolences as well as my gratitude for the enrichment that knowing this wonderful individual has given to our lives! We are sure that Bill will be greatly missed but always be loved and remembered for the generous, kind and wonderful individual that he was.
Rest in peace our friend!

Our Condolences go out to all of Bill’s family especially his nephew Don and Partner Matt.
We met Bill through Don and Matt who came to visit Bill every year in Canso and later moved to Canso to spend more time with him.

As an X-Ray Technologist myself, I worked with Bill at the Old General Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre in St. John`s since 1973 until my retirement in 2009. Since then I had mostly lost touch with Bill, I did not know he was still working in Nova Scotia. Godspeed Bill and Sincere Condolences to all of Bill`s Family at this difficult time.
