Passed peacefully on December 6, 2024, Raymond Douglas Hiscock of St. John’s, aged 91 years old, formerly of Champneys West, Trinity Bay.
Predeceased by his wife Shirley Marina Hiscock (nee Vere-Holloway), his parents Robert and Mary Ann Hiscock (nee Barnes), brothers and sisters-in-law Shirley Hiscock, Percy Vere-Holloway, Lillian Connors, Max Vere-Holloway, Alma and Fred Osmond, and Hubert Driscoll.
Raymond leaves to mourn his children: Wanda Thompson (Robert), Raymond (Deborah), Greg (Bonita), Donna O’Brien (Dan Burt), Jeff (Jackie), and Stephen (Amanda); grandchildren Emily, Kathryn, David, Justin, Mitchell, Jennifer, Ashley, Heather, Leah, Matthew, and Natalie; and great-grandchildren Jaylen, Dallas and Madelyn. Also leaving to mourn his brothers: Harvey Hiscock (Shirley) and Ernest Hiscock; his sisters-in-law Olga Bursey, Monya Driscoll, Vicky Brace, Karen Abbott (Keith) and Loretta Vere-Holloway; and his brothers-in-law Harry Holloway (Sandy) and Derek Holloway (Mary); his companion Beatrice Reid and a wide circle of friends.
Ray was raised in a traditional Newfoundland outport and he carried the love and character of that place his whole life. He worked on the Great Lakes before he established a business and his career in St. John’s in the agency sales industry and the pharmacy industry. He married Shirley in 1958 and together they provided a loving home for their children. He was deeply involved in the activities of each son and daughter, from coaching hockey, to homework, to Sunday School lessons, and driving them to every engagement. He was overjoyed as the family grew to include new spouses, plus many grandchildren and great-grand-children. Ray was a kind and friendly soul and was forever trading news and views about politics, business and family. At Kenny’s Pond he met many new friends and he especially loved the opportunities to play cribbage and attend the dances.
The family wishes to thank the outstanding staff of Kenny’s Pond Retirement Home for the care and friendship they provided during the past five years, as well as Dr. Amanda Coleman, and before her Dr. Patrick O’Shea, for their constant attention and devoted care. The family wishes to note the kind and professional support of the staff of 5 North A of the Health Sciences Centre during his final days, as well as the pastoral care of Reverend Amanda Taylor and Reverend Wayne Parsons.
Raymond is resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Monday, December 9th from 2pm to 9pm. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Logy Bay Road, on Tuesday, December 10th at 1:30pm. Our sympathy goes out to Wanda and her entire family. We saw that Wanda’s father was never far from her thoughts. In all our travels together with Wanda and Robert, she always made time to check in and share the day with family at home. She often lovingly shared stories of her father with us. So sorry to learn of Ray s passing. I knew him through work and coincidentally he was a co worker of my brothers many years ago. It was only a month ago we were remembering him.
