Raymond Ward Rose, age 82, passed away peacefully at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland on June 17, 2021, after an intense battle with cancer.

Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 58 years Cora Rose, his sisters Florence Hann and Meta Janes, devoted son Kevin Rose (Elizabeth), cherished grandson Alexander Rose. He leaves many other friends & relatives including nephews, Lewis Hann, David Marsden, Gary Marsden, and Bryan Janes; nieces, Deanna Hann, Peggy Hann & Tracey Parsons. Raymond is predeceased by his parents, George and Harriet Rose, sister Mamie Marsden, and brother Roy Rose.

Raymond was born on Fox Island in Newfoundland. He later met the love of his life, Cora, in Burgeo.

Raymond graduated from Memorial University before receiving a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Columbia University in New York City. He had a successful career in education first as a teacher, then as a principal, and finally as a regional superintendent. Raymond served as a regent for Memorial University for several years. To his many friends and family, he was respected as a patient and gentle mentor.

Raymond had a passion for the outdoors. During his time teaching in Labrador, he enjoyed snowmobiling and hunting caribou. When visiting his hometown of Burgeo, he would never turn down the opportunity to get out in a boat or jig a codfish. He looked forward to moose season at Peter Strides with his sister Mamie & Norm Marsden & family.

Throughout his life, Raymond was an active community leader. He cared deeply about Newfoundland’s future direction and participated in politics at the local and provincial level. He was on the executive of the local CARP and also served as a lay Committee Member of the Disciplinary Panel of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Raymond and Cora loved to travel and visited many exciting places together. They shared especially fond memories of their time in Florida, Hawaii, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Raymond was a honourable man, kind and diplomatic to a fault.  He was blessed with a warm, positive energy that drew people towards him. Even up until his time at the retirement centre, Raymond was sought out by others to assist with problem-solving because of his sensitive, balanced and considerate demeanour.

Most importantly, Raymond was a most dearly loved husband and father. He adored his grandson, Alexander, and cherished their time together.  We will forever be grateful for having Raymond in our lives.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and other health professionals who contributed to Raymond’s care during his final days. We would like especially thank: Dr. Seal, Dr. Fardy, Dr. Coleman, and Dr. Ralph (CBS Clinic). The family would also like to thank his sister Meta for the extra support & care. He would like a special mention of his niece Peggy for her kindness, support & all the seafood chowder.

Family and friends may visit Carnell’s Funeral Home in St. John’s at the following times: Saturday, June 19th from 2-4 pm and Sunday, June 20th from 2-4 pm.

The funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Gail Coley MacDonald on Monday, June 21st at 2 pm from The Carnell Memorial Chapel. The funeral will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend.

My condolences to Ron’s family! I was a teacher in Labrador City during some of Ron’s years there. He was a very professional, fair and kind as an administrator. May your memories of him keep him with you always!

My sincerest condolences to the Rose family on the passing of Mr. Rose. I have many memories of him from JRSC in Wabush but one that stands out is from after I left Wabush to move to the island. Mr. Rose and his family were on the same coastal ferry as I was, on a return trip from my Mother’s home town of Ramea. It was quite a rough trip and I was traveling alone at the age of 14 or 15 and Mr. Rose told me to come sit with his family for the trip to Port Aux Basques, one of the roughest trips I’ve ever experienced. I was so glad to be with people I knew at a terrifying time like that. He put me at ease and made me feel very safe. It was something I never forgot. Rest In Peace

Very sorry to hear the news of Mr. Rose’s passing. I remember him as a lovely, compassionate and caring individual when he was principal at J.R. Smallwood Collegiate. I remember the year Mrs. Rose travelled with us on our Young Voyageur trip to Saskatchewan. My sincere condolences to her and to the whole family.

Sincere condolences to family and friends , he will be greatly missed . Mr. Rose was my principal years ago and have many fond memories

He was and as we continue to remember him, still can be a great role model for us all. May you find comfort in the support of family and friends as you share beautiful memories of your loved one.

Cora and family,
We are very sorry to hear of Ray’s passing. Dorothy remembers Ray, sitting at the head of her class in Row 1 in Grade 7, as a cheerful and friendly young person, always with a smile – something he carried with him all his life. I remember Ray as an enthusiastic math student in some of my math classes as Memorial University. The last time that we met was at my sister’s (Daphne & Bert) house where Ray talked with us in that typical friendly manner about old times as if it were yesterday.

Our sincere condolences to you, Cora, and your family and friends.

Sid & Dorothy Troke

Eleanor and I will cherish the conversations that we had with you and Ray over the past few months. Ray’s courage, steadfastness and his concern for you reminded me of the many ways that I knew and remember Ray from our first year university in 1956, to the warm and friendly Christmas that I spent with Ray and his family in Burgeo wilie I was teaching in Ramea, to the years of friendship and leadership that Eleanor and I had with you and Ray in Wabush. Ray left a mark of caring, understanding and friendship on the lives of everyone who knew him. W e a re all very thankful for that and he will be sadly missed.
Kevin we know that you had a very special Dad and that you have many great memories that will sustain you in the days to come. We extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Cora, our hearts go out to you as you begin to cope with the loss of your husband, soul-mate and best friend. We knew that Ray was waging a strong battle with the scourge of cancer, ready for whatever he had to face. He was ready but we still have problems accepting the fact that he has gone from us.
Thank goodness we have years of great memories to look back upon. Our paths first crossed when Ray came from Burgeo to Port aux Basques in 1955 to complete his Grade XI. From that time, through Memorial University, onward to teaching in Wabush and school administration in Labrador West until 1994, we were part of each others lives. We even overlapped our time at Columbia U in NY during the mid 1960’s. Yes, there is much to be thankful for and Ray would want us to hold those good times in our hearts.
We extend our sincere sympathies to you, Kevin and family.

To Cora, Kevin and family: It is with great sadness that we learned of Ray’s passing. We remember him so well from our time together in Wabush and our chance meetings after we returned to the Island. I worked with Ray for years while living in Wabush and remember him as a kind man. Please accept our deepest condolences.

The epitome of a gentleman!!! We remember with fondness how we bumped into Ray and Cora in Florida many years ago!! We were typical, proud Newfoundlanders that day. May beautiful memories comfort Cora, your son Kevin and all your family. “You were a good man, Sir!!”

Ive known Ray for many years and it was always a pleasure tio have a chat. My last conversation was just prior to the pandemic when Ray wondered if I would come visit his retirement place and play some music. I didn’t get that opportunity but it would have been nice to see Ray again. My sincere sympathy to all the Rose family.

To Ray’s Family
I met Ray at MUN. Then as a student when we were doing a survey on Burnt Island off Burgeo, we hired Ray as a helper and we boarded with the Rose family in Burgeo. We last connected at the MUN 50th Anniversary and he told me then that I gave him his first job. Of course it was the first real ‘paying’ job.
He was a kind, gentle soul with a conscience, much respected.

To Cora, Kevin and family;
Deepest condolences to you all and to Ray’s extended family. We have shared a few stories over the past two days and have very fond memories of Ray, from work and play. Thinking of you all at this very difficult time.

Sorry for your loss. Our deepest and most sincere condolences to all the family.

Dear Cora,
How incredibly sad you must be. And what a loss for you and your family..
I have known Ray for a number of years and from the outset he impressed me a a true gentleman of sterling character., a gentleman to his fingertips. Weather he was representing CARP or dabbling in the political process, Ray was in for the long haul. He could always be counted upon to be completely candid but he possessed the gift of being able to be honest while never attacking or belittling anyone. He was the soul of discretion and could be trusted to hold a confidence, no matter what. He liked to recall his days as an educator and told great tales about his time in Labrador.. One thing I truly grew to appreciated was his habit of seeking you out weather he saw you across Walmart or at a meeting or conference. His handshake was so warm and his presence so genuine. .I will miss running into him and enjoying his love of just a gab and some catching up.
You have always had my great admiration. And today I’m sending along my profound sympathy. Again I say, what a loss!
God Bless,
Al Antle

Cora and Kevin, we are so sorry to hear of Ray’s passing. Your family is fondly remembered from your days in Wabush.
