Rita passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, after a long and full life. Born to Margaret (Spurrell) and Clarence Winsor in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Rita attended Bishop Spencer College where she won awards in proficiency in academics and her passion, athletics. She was a Track and Field and Basketball star and won many awards and trophies for first place. No one could outrun Mom.
After completing her post-secondary education Rita worked for McNamara Construction and Concrete Products as bookkeeper before securing a job with the Provincial Government in the Department of Finance. Rita married Harold Rowe on June 11, 1958 and they raised their daughters, Beverley and Kathy on Vaughan Place in St. John’s. Together with Harold she gave her girls a loving and happy home where friends and family were always welcome and well fed. Mom’s birthday parties were epic and friends still talk about them to this day. She was a member of the Anglican Church Women’s Association, spending countless hours making her soups and sandwiches for Church fairs as well as volunteering in other capacities. Her stories of vacations at Trinity Cabins were filled with laughter and later, annual trips to St. Pete’s Beach with family and friends brought joy. Mom found pleasure in travel into her later years and particularly loved a recent trip to Lake Louise, Alberta, where the air was pure and she felt she could breathe. She travelled to Toronto yearly to visit family and quickly became part of an Ontario group of friends, where she was loved.
Rita is survived by her daughters, Beverley Rowe Karagianis (Elliot) and Kathy Rowe (Rev. Robert Earle), her three grandchildren and two great granddaughters: Andrew Karagianis (Ally) and Rae Karagianis; David Karagianis (Sammie); Heather Walker (Matt) and Sage Walker. Also survived by her brother-in-law, Hal Lilly and her lifelong friend, Suzanne (Sue) Bursey.
Rita was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Margaret Winsor, her husband Harold Rowe, and her sister Jean Lilly.
Thank you to Dr. Amanda Coleman and Tiffany Village staff for their kindness and care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Canada Red Cross in Rita’s memory.
As per Rita’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
Visitation will be held at Carnells Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday October 15th. A funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 11a.m. on Wednesday October 16th.

I will miss my Aunt Rita always good for a laugh and a very strong woman. One of my endearing memories of her which in my mind encapsulated her perfectly was picking her and my Uncle Harold at the airport. While waiting for the luggage she spotted John Crosbie in the crowd and I swear I saw a tiny bit of apprehension in his face. I could tell she was animated but I had no idea what they were talking about but his facial expressions could have been used in an acting class to simulate being uncomfortable! That was the Winsor girls and was directed towards me at times by both, funnily enough I secretly enjoyed Aunt Rita’s dressing down than my mother,, funny that. Unfortunately I will not be able to make the service but a donation will be made to MS. Best to you Bev, Kathy and families at this time. If there is a higher power he/she better be on their toes.
Bev and family,
Sorry to hear about your loss. My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time.
Rita has left a big hole in our family and our hearts, and her legacy will not soon be forgotten. I will always remember my first trip to Newfoundland and St. John’s in 2015, where she seemed to cook for us all day. I will also remember how I often struggled to understand Rita’s accent and euphemisms in the early days of my relationship with Andrew (I think I do better now). Lastly, I know Andrew and I will treasure the times and memories that Rita got to spend with our daughter Rae. That was very important to us. RIP Rita/ Great Nanny, Love Ally, Rae & Andrew

Dear Bev and Cathy,
I want to say how sorry I was to hear of Aunt Rita’s passing. We’re never prepared for this news as we never want our loved ones to leave us.
I’m grateful for the many years of memories I have of your Mom. As family, we’d gather together during the holidays. Even when I moved, I’d always try and visit or get her to the house for tea. There was also an occasional game of cards which we all know she loved. My Mom used to call her a card shark, so I guess that meant she was pretty good.. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to see her in July while I was home. We treasure these memories so much more now.
Please take good care and know your mom will be missed by all whose lives she touched.. I’m sending you and your families love and care during this difficult time.
Sincerely, Debbie
