Robert John Campbell

October 4, 1951 to June 17, 2022

Obituary

Rob died peacefully in the presence of his loving family.  Left to mourn his loss and celebrate his life, his loving wife of 48 years Betty (O’Neill), his beloved children Gillian and Andrew and his cherished grandchildren, Arabella, Ariana, Avery and Camren Campbell; brother Scott (Cathy) Campbell, sisters Susan (Michael) Murray, Anne (Janet Lenover) Campbell; brothers-in-law Reg (Paula), Ed, Paul (Andrea), Adrian (Vita) and an extended circle of life-long friends and relatives.

Predeceased by his parents Angus and Maureen (O’Reilly) Campbell, his precious grandmother, Mary (Halley) Campbell who lived with Rob and Betty for a few years, his infant brother, Richard and his parents-in-law Bill and Olive (Kent) O’Neill and sister-in-law Mary O’Neill.

Rob had a wide circle of associates from work and long time friends from St. Bon’s, Gonzaga and King’s College NS. Rob completed studies at Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic.

After his professional training, Rob worked with his father, Angus Campbell, in his architectural firm and benefited greatly from his dad’s mentorship before striking out on his own with other architectural firms and then with the provincial and federal governments in Public Works. He had a real flare for design and worked for many years in association with others in the architectural community. In his years at Public Works Canada his co-workers always counted on Rob for his support.

Rob deeply loved and was dedicated to his family and he experienced tremendous joy when his grandchildren were near.  He was a man who had a deep reservoir of humour, sense of fun and comedy. He had a great love of animals and enjoyed an assortment of beloved family dogs. His two dogs Crosby and Sydney miss him dearly.

Rob’s compassion and kindness for others and his work has always been marked by his ability of finding the good in others.

Rob was a man of deep faith, he served in his parish life as a pastoral minister for many years both at St. Pius X and in visiting seniors in various long term care homes. His presence was always a welcome one to the frail elderly folks who shared their memories with him.

Rob faced his illness with fortitude, strength, and his abiding faith. The family extends their gratitude for support from a wide circle of friends, neighbours, faith community, and all the excellent health professionals for their compassionate care.

Donations in Rob’s memory can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation, The Gathering Place, or a charity of your choice.

Cremation has already taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, on Monday, June 20, 2022 from 2-4 pm and 6-9pm.  Funeral service will take place at The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 11:00 am with interment at Belvedere Roman Catholic Cemetery, St John’s.

RIP Rob

Such very sad news. My sincerest condolences to Rob’s family. One of the finest gentleman and most gentle souls I’ve ever met. Was lucky to have met Rob and worked with him for many years. It was my pleasure to have known him. RIP my friend.

Betty, Andrew, Gillian & Campbell/O’Neill families.
Our deepest sympathy to you at this difficult time.
Rob was truly a great friend from the time of growing up until the very end. Each time we spoke or met we shared a good laugh over the times we spent together on Osbourne and Shea Streets. Rob was the only person I knew that could mimic a police siren and get cars to pull over.! Oh, the memories I have where we discussed topics from health to politics and more. The wise cracks, jokes and laughter will remain with me forever.
In summation, Rob was kind, fair and honest. If you combine those attributes with a talent for logic & reasoning, add a great sense of humour, a passion for life, his intelligence and love for his dogs and embracing the responsibility of being a devoted husband & father, then you have the recipe for a great friend. Rest in peace my friend.
