Robert Strong Driscoll passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Center on August 1, 2024, at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife Karen (Jensen); his children Timothy (Yanna), Beth Ann (Duncan); sisters Judy (Ed, deceased) and Sharon (Sheldon Mitchell), and grandchildren Leonore and Jack and their mother Sophie.
He also leaves behind nephews Neal, Shawn and Darryl and their families, Duncan’s children Logan and Jordan (Ela, grandson Thomas) and Yanna’s children Gemma and Lena. Robert was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Joyce Driscoll, and parents-in-law Bill and Gladys Jensen. Robert was a gentleman’s gentleman and had a number of important friendships throughout his life, in particular brother-in-law Ed Stratton.
A quiet soul, Robert loved his family, Acadia University, and their summer place in Bay Roberts, in that order. Robert and Karen traveled yearly to visit Tim and his family in France, returning with several bottles of wine selected with great care by Tim. This wine was rarely drunk as it was too special, and there were few occasions important enough to warrant “a bottle from France”. Pearls of wisdom from time at Acadia was a frequent topic of conversations, and while there may be a more perfect educational institution, somewhere, we’re not sure that’s possible. “Bay Roberts”, as he called their summer place, was a place of joy and fun, and allowed Dad to have his beloved fire all year round. Time spent in Bay Roberts was often with Judy and Ed and was made more special by a visit from Sharon.
Summer long weekends were reserved for the Bonnell’s at Middle Gull Pond and Bay Roberts; Saturday morning breakfasts all year long were reserved for the Young’s and A&W. Many other friends were welcomed in town and Bay Roberts throughout the year at parties, bridge games, and visits. His friendships were lifelong, returning to schoolboy days. There are too many to list, but he valued everyone.
Other passions were the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Green Bay Packers. He would discuss his pilgrimage to Green Bay, WI with Beth Ann at great length and in great detail, needing very little encouragement. Robert volunteered at Bridges to Hope Food Aid Centre for many years in a variety of roles, from board member to packing tea bags for clients, and was proud of his work.
Robert adored his wife Karen, saying when asked “she’s the best” long before they dated, and telling the story in a quiet, reverent voice. Dating for just six weeks before becoming engaged and marrying six months after that shows how certain he was of the match. His final words before slipping away were “there’s the girl with the gorgeous hair”.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Monday, August 5th from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 9 pm. A service will be held Tuesday, August 6th, 11:00 am at Wesley United Church. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Bridges to Hope Food Aid Centre, Voice of Wesley Radio (VOWR) or Wesley United Church would be gratefully appreciated.

My sympathies to Robert’s family, especially his sisters, Judy and Sharon. My dad and his (known to me as Uncle Albert) were the best of friends, and I can recall the dads along with Robert and my late brother Bill taking fishing trips to their cabin in Mahers years ago. While it has been many years since I lived in Newfoundland, frequently when I returned I would see Robert on Sunday mornings at Wesley Church. He was always friendly and gracious. He will be greatly missed.
We were so sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. We’ve been fortunate to see him regularly at gatherings over the years, particularly over the holidays and at Middle Gull Pond. The many references to him as a gentleman are well-founded. Our heartlfelt condolences to Karen, Tim, Beth Ann and families.

Dear Karen and family. It was so sad to hear of Robert’s passing. It has been my privilege to have been friends with Robert ever since childhood and to have gotten to know his family. It is sad that friendships have to come to an obvious end. Barb and I understand his love for Bay Roberts because Cape Onion is our equivalent. Right now we are actually driving back there for our second visit this summer, so we will not be able to directly honor the life of this very fine gentleman. Please be assured that you are in our thoughts. We are confident that you and your familys, together, will have the strength and courage to get through your loss. Barb and I pass on our deepest condolences.
May your gentle soul R.I.P. Bob

Dear Karen, Tim, and Bth Ann, Sharron and I offer I deepest condolences to all of you ad your families.. Both Sharron and I considered him a close friend and a caring,, considerate, kind and compassionate man. It is no exaggeration to say our friendship was based in those characteristics which epitomized Bob and the way he lived his life. He deeply loved Karen and that love extended to all his family and in the form of friendship was extended to all those he dealt with.
Karen and family I’m so sorry to hear the news. My sincere condolences!
My condolences on your loss. I worked with Bob at Aliant. He was a true gentleman and soul, smart and kind.
Karen and Robert’s family members. I was blessed to meet Robert at Acadia in 1963. He saved me from quitting school a number to times. He listened to my plights and guided me when I needed and benefitted from his good sense. He was an old soul before there were old souls. He took me back to Rennie’s Mill Road and showed me his world. I have had the pleasure of being in loose contact over the years.
I am honoured to have met and maintained our friendship over many decades.
Thank you Robert Strong Driscoll.

Karen, Beth Ann & Family,
Getting to know Robert was a pleasure. He was a gentleman in every sense. His support and excitement regarding me going back to school is something that won’t be forgotten.
I will think of him every time I pick up a John Grisham book.
My thoughts are with you all during this difficult time. Robert was a very special person. May his memory be a blessing.
Karen, Beth Ann, Tim and families!
Yes indeed, the world, our ‘neighbourhood world’ has lost a wonderful gentleman!
We enjoyed his company in our lives and his kindness and appreciation were always his hallmark.
Wine was mentioned in his obituary and at the dinners we enjoyed with himself and Karen in their home, wine flowed and the conversations were lively. Always a treat!
We all on Rennies/Carpasian have wonderful memories that will make him present in our thoughts for years to come! Cheers, Robert Strong! Hugs, Karen💕

The world has lost a truly good man with the loss of Robert Driscoll. I have been privileged to have experienced his laughter, wisdom, open heart, friendship, and example of joy and love for his family, and will continue to hold all of that close into the future. Karen, Tim and Beth Ann, I am so sorry that I can’t be with you in the next days, but my heart, prayers and thoughts are most certainly with you, Robert and your families.
I am very sorry for your liss, Karen and family. I always found Robert to be a warm welcoming person whenever I was in his company. He was a happy man and was quite open about how much he loved you. I am sure you will miss him but will find comfort in your memories
