Baseball Great Ted Williams said, “You have to hit the fastball to play in the big leagues.”
Robin John Short did just that. Award-winning Sports Editor of The Telegram for 36 years, he was a consummate journalist and respected writer within sports communities at the provincial, national, and international levels. Professionally, Robin did play in the big leagues, attending and covering NHL Drafts, NHL Winter Classics, Olympic Games, and other historical moments in sport. Robin witnessed Team Gushue’s Gold Medal win in 2006, Danny Cleary’s Stanley Cup Victory in 2008, and Sidney Crosby’s Golden Goal in 2010, to name a few. He was a published author, wrote for major sporting websites and publications, was a radio correspondent for TSN and a colour commentator for Rogers Television and VOCM for the St. John’s IceCaps and Growlers.
The sports world has lost a prolific journalist but the deeper loss is for his loving family and friends. His greatest title was “Dad” to his son Cameron. He was the best husband to Kim – together they called themselves ‘the Three Musketeers’. He was a loving son to Mary. Their hearts are shattered but they are comforted by their beautiful life together and the overwhelming outpouring of tributes and support.
Robin Short was a good man. He had razor sharp wit and a quick sense of humour. He loved his family fiercely and was a loyal, devoted friend. His home was his haven where he enjoyed an open fire, 80’s music, family game nights, and a good glass of wine. His man cave was his domain and his collection of sports memorabilia was the envy of many. He loved hosting shed nights with his friends and colleagues. Robin was very well-read, well-travelled, and drove all over North America (often without a map). Robin was an athlete who enjoyed a game of baseball, softball, squash, golf, and weekly hockey nights with long time buddies. Robin was a coach and mentor to youth in baseball, basketball, and hockey. He believed in children having an opportunity to play sports, and collaborated with corporate and sport organizations to start A-C level teams, tournaments, and leagues for love of a game.
Robin passed away on Sunday morning, August 29, 2021 surrounded by the loves of his life – his wife Kim, his son Cameron and his mother Mary. He was 56 years old. Arrangements have been entrusted to Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, with visitation on Tuesday, August 31 and Wednesday, September 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Corpus Christi Church, Waterford Bridge Road at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 2 followed by inurnment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Please register to attend the funeral service during visitation at Carnell’s. The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend with the link available on Robin’s obituary page at www.carnells.com or www.streamingservices.ca. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to KIDSPORT Newfoundland and Labrador.

I was one of the lucky people who got to meet Robin through sports. He supported my career through the ups and downs playing of professional hockey and was always in my corner no matter what other media outlets were saying about me. I want you to know how much that meant to me. I was fortunate enough to be named the Newfoundland Male Athlete of the year many years ago. What many don’t know is that it was Robin who really pushed for me to receive the award. I can’t thank him enough for his support through the years. The world lost an amazing writer but even better person. I send my deepest condolences and hope Robin can rest in peace.

There are no words I can use to express my sadness upon hearing of Robin’s passing. I feel very fortunate to have known and played hockey with him at O’Hehir arena for many years. I always used to kid him about his name being Short, while he certainly wasn’t. He always had a great comeback too. He was a great guy, very knowledgeable in his field, and always kind. Robin was taken from us too early, but despite the fact he was only 56 he lived a life that many would envy. He was an eye-witness to some of the greatest performances by this province’s athletes and his ability to describe them was second to none. As a columnist, he didn’t hold back when it came to expressing his opinion. Whether you agreed with him or not, you looked forward to reading his next column because he was always informative. We knew Robin for many years and we shared many laughs along the way. He will be missed. Our sincere condolences to his wife Kim, his son Cameron and his mother Mary.

I just wanted to say sorry about hearing of Robin’s passing!
I’ve known Robin for a long time. I first met Robin when he played baseball with Holy Cross down at St. Pat’s Ball Park and then got to know Robin more when he became a great sports writer for the Evening Telegram. His articles showed a commitment to honesty and integrity but also never shied away from saying it as it is no matter what. Robin Short, the writer was the same as Robin Short the man, reflecting that brutal honesty in everything he did but with an underlying compassion for people he met or wrote about.
I will miss our conversations about sports and about the simple things in life.

I often think about the story you told me how you asked Robin if he believed in God and how he replied there had to be a God as that was the only way that his Grandmother arrived safely home after she bought a car in Toronto and drove back to Newfoundland following Newfoundland license plates.

Shocked and very saddened to learn of Robins passing. I’ve had a long relationship that began through my sports career and he shined a light on many NL athletes both local and abroad. He always took the time to catch up whenever I got home and we always had a good laugh. It won’t be the same without his words or presence.

We send our heartfelt condolences to you all at this most difficult time. I was fortunate to be be a teammate of Robin’s both on the baseball diamond and at the hockey rink . My brothers , Mike , Gerard ,Andy ( bat boy ) and I all had the pleasure to be on the same team with Robin during our Holy Cross Senior baseball days back in the late 80s and early 90s . After the games we would go to the Wadden room , have a few cold ones and laugh at stories from Robin , Mike or Gerard Hags ! The same would happen at the hockey rink . In the dressing room late after the game just laughing and telling stories . Robin was a great teammate but more importantly he was a great friend to our family ! He will be truly missed . Robin was a “ salt of the earth person “ , with a soft heart and caring personality ! Rest In Peace , Robin !

The NL sports world lost a big one, a great big one in Robin Short. Please accept my condolences in the passing of Robin he certainly was a larger than life figure. I first meet Robin way back in the early days of The St. John’s Junior Hockey League in which he covered on many occasions, as I was involved with the league. Over the years Robin and I did not always agree with everything that the other did but I can say there was no hard feelings as we both respected the others opinion.
I am sure that you all have many great memories to reflect on in troubling times that may come your way. I end off by saying God Bless you all and to Robin who was referred to way back in the early days of the St. John’s Maple Leafs. After a boat tour we took together, when in the The Telegram in was reported “…. and hence a new meaning was given to ‘The Jolly Green Giant’.
I didn’t know Robin personally but I had great admiration for the way he covered Newfoundland athletes and his outspoken pride of being a Newfoundlander.. The accolades from the people who knew him personally are testimony to his competence and decency. RIP.

My wife & I were in Corner Brook in January to accept our son’s award for entry into the Newfoundland Hockey Hall of Fame. Robin was the emcee. He was so upbeat & did a great job. We never would have known he was ill as he was the same jovial person we had met over 20 years ago.

I was saddened to hear of Robin’s passing and send along my heartfelt condolences.
Like many people have described, Robin’s gruff and tough “work personality”, was different from the true version of this gentle giant.
He treated me with respect as I was starting out as an inexperienced “kid” out of university and over the years our working relationship turned into a friendship. Sharing many laughs in the press box, the dressing room and numerous road trips.
While we had not crossed paths much over the last few years, when we did it was like we had seen each other yesterday.
He was a true professional covering the provincial sports scene bringing passion and commitment to his work, regardless if his story was about the professional or amateur athlete.
I hope the memories you have and the many, many tributes you see will help get you through this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.

The world has lost one of the great sports writers . Robin Short Jr reported sports and sports stories with a genuine conviction , never wavering and uninhibited, always willing to tackle the controversial stories that others would not . Robin was knowledgeable about so many sports and was not limited to only the sports aficionados, he was verse on current affairs and politics as well . I had the fortunate opportunity to engage with Robin in three different sports over the years, in which he was in depth, both
in his research and knowledge in all areas of the game . A fantastic sense of humour and a shoot from the hip kind of guy . I worked for Robin periodically over the years where he was always thoughtful of his employees.
The feeling today that there is a loss of journalistic integrity or it is in the very least diminshed , is abound in Robin’s passing . To Kim and Cameron and Mrs. Short I have no words just positive memories of Robin that I hope remain forever . RIP big guy and go Yankees and yes go Habs . ⚾️ 🏀 🥎 🏒

So sorry to hear of Robin’s passing. Jim remembers well Robin’s start with The Telegram and how he wasn’t sure whether this was for him as a career. His father always used to say – Robin – “stick with it”. It turned out to be a great career for him in which he loved. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all.

How we will miss him. Great in so many ways and was always there for the Province’s athlete’s from the pros to the kids. He was synonymous with everything in Newfoundland and Labrador related to sports. He was warm and friendly on a personal level and always positive. Loved talking to you about hockey and basketball. Still hard to believe he’s moved on.

I was so saddened to hear of Robin’s passing. He was a sports journalist of the highest caliber and I enjoyed, and valued, his insights whenever I had the good fortune to speak with him over the years for Here and Now. But beyond his professionalism, Robin was a decent man and so funny at times. I can only imagine the loss being felt by his family and closest friends. My heartfelt condolences.

Robin had an amazing talent and his devotion to his family was one to be admired so much. But he was also an exceptional supporter of fellow co-workers. I remember him as being very kind and welcoming from the first time I stepped inside The Telegram. He will be missed so much. I had the opportunity to work with Robin at The Evening Telegram for a number of years back in the late Eighties and Early Nineties. I loved the fact that he reported it as he saw it, not how other people sometimes wanted him to see it. We may never see his like again on the sports scene and he made a huge contribution that will be felt for years. God Bless.
It was with a profound sense of sadness that I learned of Robin’s passing on Sunday morning.. Our friendship has spanned close to four decades, going back to
provincial senior hockey at Memorial Stadium and then 30 years of professional hockey.. His passion and commitment to covering sports in Newfoundland was second to none and he leaves behind a great legacy. which will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed.

Kim, Cam, and Mrs. Short; Sorry for your loss.!! We are shocked and saddened to hear the news of Robin’s passing. Deepest and sincere condolences. I have many good memories of Robin over the years, playing sports together (ice hockey, baseball, softball, and road trips). My first memory of Robin is when he showed up at Conway Glen Park to play baseball in the summer city run league. He was a chubby 12 or 13 year old kid, with braces, thick rim glasses, and wearing his New York Yankees Jersey. We were all like, who is this kid, where did he come from. He wasn’t from our neighborhood, so he stood out like a sore thumb. I played in a Saturday Night Ice Hockey League with Robin for many years at Fieldian Gardens, and spent three years down at St. Pats playing baseball with him for Holy Cross. I also, played a few softball tournaments with Robin over the years. We had so many good times and laughs. In the dressing room after hockey talking sports, drinking beer, and smoking cigarettes. There are too many to mention them all. Robin was an all-around great guy and teammate. Although I hadn’t had much contact with Robin over the past several years, I still consider him a good friend, and I would still reminisce about those times whenever his name was mentioned or showed up on social media. There are no words for such an unimaginable loss. You’re in our thoughts and prayers. Rest easy Robin.!! God Speed.!!

It is with such sadness today that I try to recapture the very pleasant moments I shared with Robin over the years. We first met 35 years ago, of course on the baseball diamond. I was a player with the Grand Falls Beothucks and Robin doing what he did best … writing ✍️ for the @Evening Telegram. We had so many great chats over the years then I had the chance to be a teammate of Robin’s when I joined Holy Cross Baseball Club during the early 90’s in St. John’s. . We had so much fun in those days. Yes he referred to me as the “ diminutive “ Center fielder ( I’m 5’ 5” and I referred to him as the gentle giant , him being 6’6”.). We have had several chats via telephone over the past couple of years ranging from many topics and always talking sports. I was with Team Nl Mission staff for 4 consecutive Canada Games and Robin would always reach out to have a great chat and get the lasted story. He was a true professional in his job , but much more than that, a great friend. I stuck for words here today but can’t help thinking he is in a better place free from pain . As the days , weeks and months go by, we whom were fortunate to know Robin , our tears will be replaced with smiles as we cherish the great memories he has given us. RIP Robin

I first met Robin through the St.John’s Media Softball league. He was just an incredible player. He would hit monster shots out over my head at Mary Queen of Peace field, Victoria Park. With Mark Dwyer and Rosie Mullaley aboard, Robin would trot the bases with his red cleats on and high five them both at home plate, like they were kids.
After the inning, Brendan McCarthy would come into the dugout and would say to Craig Jackson that you cannot pitch Robin inside. Craig would say – it doesn’t matter where you pitch Robin and he was right. Robin owned the field.
As time went on, I got to know who Robin Short was. Through the 100’s of media softball league games, having beers at media hockey games., I learned that Robin was this great all-around person , wanted to be your friend and when you spoke to him, he made you laugh.
The stories he told me would never hit newsprint.
Back in the day, our little Media League gave us a chance to get to know opposing media players and who their significant others were and then who their children were. We were all close buds. People like Robin taught me that the beer was as cold after a loss as it was after a win. The highlight of the day was the beers and laughs you had with the crowd from the Telegram, NTV, Hearld/Oz, etc.
Gonna miss our laughs Robin. Thanks for the memories. RIP
