Ronald (Ron) Harte

December 11, 1944 to June 11, 2022

Obituary

Ronald (Ron) Harte passed peacefully away, aged 77 years after a humble and courageous period of illness.  Ron was predeceased by his parents: Rose and Andrew, his siblings: Reg, Dotti (Charlie), Jack, Anna, and Willie, his parents-in-law: Mary and Thomas Keough, and sister-in-law Betty (Johnny).

Left to mourn their sad loss, his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Joan, son Shane (Jane) and grandchildren: Taj, Teyo, and Lucy. His siblings: Kevin (Sharon), Marion (Bruce), Eileen (Ernest deceased), Janice, sisters-in-law Patty and Edith and brother-in-law Robert.  Joan’s siblings: Brendan (Judy), Michael (Carlann), Andreine (Gilles deceased), Peg (Stan), Dot (Adrian), Molly (Adrian), and Eileen (Conrad).  Also mourning their loss are many nieces and nephews and close lifelong friends.

Ron worked hard – not retiring until the age of 70 in 2015 – but he worked to live rather than lived to work. His love of the outdoors was only surpassed by his love and devotion to family and friends. Despite his recent health, Ron continued to enjoy life.  Hunting, trouting, and snowmobiling were his passions but he also enjoyed the simple pleasures – a good boil-up, reading a book in the sun, early Sunday morning coffee and drives through downtown, feeding the ducks with Lucy, watching Taj and Teyo excel at sports, and enjoying the sun set into the Red Hills, just to name a few.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Health Science Centre for their kindness and care of Ron.  Special thanks to Dr. Trent Parsons, Dr. Jamie Farrell, Dr. Frankie O’Dea, and Dr. Barry Rose for providing excellent care and guidance over the last few years.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, NL on Thursday, June 16 from 1-4pm and 6-8pm.

Funeral Mass will be held from St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent, St. John’s, on Friday, June 17th, 2022 at 9:30 am. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Topsail Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gathering Place, The Daffodil Place or a charity of one’s choice.

Lonny and I are so saddened to learn of your lose. We have many wonderful memories that will remain in our hearts and bring us smiles. Keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Throughout life’s journey, we meet and interact with a lot of people. Some are leaves, some are branches, and some are roots. Ron most assuredly was a root. And perhaps one of the strongest ones for me, second only to my parents. His first ‘role’ in my life was that as my godfather, but over time, he became a father-like figure and someone who kept me on the straight and narrow, and later a friend.

Very few memories of my life don’t involve Ron. His family and mine were very much intertwined. Especially when it came to ‘da woods.’ Where there was Ron, there was my dad; where there was my dad, there was Ron. And even beyond the woods, Ron was involved in my life: family dinners, birthday meals, vacations, and so on.

His passing has left a void. He was loved, and he will be missed.

Deepest sympathy to Joan and family and the Heart family. Cherish all your special memories. I have many wonderful memories of times Ron spent at our house but am especially thankful for the time Ron and Mont took my dad to Merasheen island. Thanks for the memories

To Joan, Shane, Kevin and family, we are so sorry to hear of Ron’s passing. So many memories of Ron I wouldn’t know where to start, such a good family friend, especially when dad needed him most. Ron always lit up a room or a boil-up while out ski dooing or hunting, if Ron Harte was present, you knew it.
Ron was kind to all, young and old, he enjoyed telling stories, stirring the pot, giving a little advice here and there and bringing laughter. A true friend you could depend on. Our sincere condolences to all Ron’s close friends, especially “the cabin crowd”. On behalf of our mom, Catherine, Tracy, Les and Noel, we send our thoughts and love, we will all miss Ron.

Joan & family ,my sincere sympathy on Ron’s passing..

My deepest sympathy to Joan, Shane and family. Being a close friend of Ron’s sister, Janice, I have heard countless stores about RON. I was fortunate to meet Ron, Joan and Shane when they came to visit Janice in Calgary. Ron was super friendly, interesting, great sense of humour, generous , and very patient ( I drove them around CALGARY for hours trying to find my way back to Janice’s). Every trip to St. John’s meant for Janice being welcomed at Ron and Joan’s. A husband , father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother in law ,son, and a friend to so many. He will forever be missed and remembered with love.

To Joan and family. We offer our condolences to you on Ron’s passing. When Cliff was recovering from heart surgery , Ron was there to visit. We remember him fondly.

Aunt Joan, Shane and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Ron and will forever be grateful for his support and friendship to Dad. I was pleasantly surprised to see Ron when I was home last summer and I am glad I did. It is hard to know what to say at times like this and sometimes words just aren’t enough. I wish I could be there to give you a hug. May you be comforted at this difficult time by the many warm thoughts of those who love and care for you and Ron. May he Rest In Peace.
Love, Julie
