Passed peacefully away at the Palliative Care Unit, Roy Gollop, aged 82 years. Predeceased by his parents Charles and Hilda Gollop; brothers Doug (Audrey), Dave, Cyril (Nina) and George (Bella); sisters Joan, Jean Driscoll (Bert) and Ruby Power (Fergus).

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife of 48 years Betty (nee Collins); daughters Alison (Mark) and Adrienne (Steven); grandchildren Thomas and Harry Newell and Charlie, Audrey and Poppy Lindsay; brothers Bob (Jean Anne) and Jim (Maisie); sisters Flora Churchill (Harold) and Linda Churchill (Ern) and sister-in-law Joyce Gollop, as well as many nieces and nephews and a large circle of relatives and friends.

Roy will be remembered for his talent for gardening, his love for his beagles and hens, his skill in stonework and his deep respect for nature. Whether he was out in the garden, chasing moose and rabbits or taking his quad into the woods, he found peace and joy in the outdoors. He had a remarkable ability to take a pile of rocks or bricks and turn it into something beautiful – whether it was a sturdy wall, a fireplace, an inukshuk or just a little stone path winding through the garden. Well-respected and liked by all who knew him, Roy was always ready with a joke and a story and easily made friends wherever he went. What we will miss most is the love, warmth and light-hearted spirit he brought to the lives of his loved ones. He left a lifetime of memories – some true, some a little fibbed, but all cherished.

We would like to thank family physician Dr. Matthew Ryan as well as the doctors, nurses and staff at the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Centre for their care and compassion throughout Roy’s illness.

As per Roy’s request, cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at 11am. The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Old gardeners never die, they just go to seed.
