Passed peacefully at home in the presence of his family, Roy William Myers, age 83. Leaving to mourn his devoted wife of 61 years Heather (nee Frew), his children and their families: Carol Ann (Maurice, Jillian and Eva), Peggy (John, Erin and Ryan), and Sandra (Greg, Alex and Robyn); and brothers Gordon (Glenn) and David (Judy). Predeceased by his sister Anne (Paul) and parents Lex and Ena Myers.
Roy’s story is one of perseverance. As a young man, he began his studies in Engineering at Memorial University and spent summers in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. At age 21, his life changed dramatically, losing his leg to cancer. Faced with a challenge that would have stopped many, Roy took just one year away from his studies, before returning with determination. In 1966, he graduated from Nova Scotia Technical College with a Degree in Chemical Engineering – a milestone that reflected not only his acumen, but a resilience that would define the rest of his life.
That determination became the hallmark of an outstanding career with (Golden Eagle) Ultramar. Starting as a young engineer at the refinery in Holyrood, Roy earned the respect of colleagues through hard work and unwavering commitment. In recognition of his leadership potential, Ultramar sponsored his studies at Harvard University Business School, where he completed the Program for Management Development in the Fall of 1976. He became President of Ultramar, Atlantic Canada, an achievement of which he was immensely proud.
His work ethic was remarkable. He believed there was no substitute for preparation, organization and following through. Those values became some of the greatest gifts he passed on to his daughters and his grandchildren, who have learned that hard work is something to embrace, not avoid.
Roy was perhaps happiest sitting behind his desk with his ‘in’ and ‘out’ trays within reach. He loved a good spreadsheet. Excel wasn’t simply a program; it was a way of life. His trusty label maker was never far away, and few things escaped his labels. In later years, he became the family’s unofficial Wordle statistician, faithfully recording the daily scores – in Excel of course – and sharing the monthly results.
Away from his desk, Roy found happiness on the golf course. Whether enjoying rounds at Bally Haly or playing courses in Florida during treasured family vacations, golf brought him countless hours of enjoyment – a sport which Heather often enjoyed with him.
For more than 40 years, Roy was a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of St. John’s and earlier this year the club established the Roy Myers Scholarship, an endowed undergraduate bursary at Memorial University, created in recognition of his years of service. Roy also served several years on the board of the Cancer Care Foundation, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In his later years, Roy suffered chronic back pain and, more recently, a prostate cancer diagnosis. As always, he met these challenges with courage and quiet resilience.
Above all else, Roy loved his family. He loved Heather with all his heart and was so grateful for the love, devotion and care she gave him throughout their life together. His daughters, Carol Ann, Peggy and Sandra will forever be grateful for his guidance, encouragement and unconditional love. His grandchildren brought him immeasurable pride and joy. Roy also valued his sons-in-law, never too shy to ask for their help.
If there is one thing his family will miss most, it is his hugs. Roy gave the very best hugs. Strong, reassuring embraces that somehow said everything words could not. In those moments, you knew you were safe, loved and exactly where you belonged.
Roy leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond professional accomplishments or personal successes. He showed us that courage is choosing to move forward after life’s hardest moments; that integrity matters; that family comes first; and that there is real joy in a perfectly organized spreadsheet.
Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., on Thursday, July 23 from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m.
Funeral service to be held Friday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Logy Bay Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy’s memory may be made to the Cancer Care Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador.

My sincerest, heartfelt condonences to Heather and the family. Roy was one of the finest and kindest men I’ve ever known. He had been a client and a mentor for more than 30 years.
Roy sat in my chair for the first time in 1998, and at that time, I was at the start of my career. He was always a pleasure and a wealth of knowledge in many ways, much of which I didn’t know at that time.
I’m beyond gratefut to have known Roy and will remember him fondly.

I worked at Golden Eagle/Ultramar for 15 years along with Roy. As well as co-workers, we had an adversarial relationship as I was president of the local union and had many bargaining sessions together.
Roy was honest, straightforward and a man of his word. I believe he was the first refinery manager from Newfoundland and was certainly the best.
During his tenure, the worker’s salaries were brought up to national standards and allowed many of us to live very nicely in Holyrood.
He was a good and fair man who I deeply respected.
Many years later I met up with him at the Terra Nova golf course and shared a couple drinks and good memories. I also told him of a wonderfully wicked prank I pulled on him because it was too good to keep to myself. He laughed his hearty laugh and probably called me out a bit.

“I am a thousand winds that blow.” Roy’s well-deserved legacy is that his positive influence will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him and through them will spread far beyond anything he could have imagined. Roy was an outstanding example of a truly good family man, friend, and neighbour. We have been Roy’s and Heather’s next door neighbours for more than 22 years. We could never have wished for better beighbours, and the Woodlands Condo community could never have wished for a more dedicated and committed community builder. Betty and I extend sincere condolences to the entire Myers family.. As an engineering student I had the privilege of knowing both Roy and his brother Gord. Roy won the admiration and respect of all students when he returned to class with one leg and a crutch after being away for a full year. That respect extended to everybody who got to know him for his entire career. He finally has the peace he deserved.

Roy and I worked side by side at Ultramar for years… he was great to work with and following his lead , the team had success in significantly growing market share and profitability in Nl. When Ultramar Canada purchased Gulf Oil and Texaco, in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, it was telling that Roy was given the responsibility of running the Easter Canada Division which included operations in NS, NB and PEI. No doubt the many hours we spent on airplanes directing the Atlantic Division and attending meetings in Montreal and Toronto contributed to his chronic back issues… he never once complained . When Ultramar ownership in the UK decided to totally reorganize the Canadian operations , it was not surprising that Roy was given a leadership role in this initiative.
We shared many enjoyable rounds of golf …. he was a keen competitor . He will be remembered with reverence and a smile by the Super Bowl Annual all day poker game crew over 30 years …. Ian, Lee, Vic, Chris, Roger, Bill … did I say that Roy was competitive !
Rest in peace my friend…you leave a great legacy with family , friends , business and community associates .

That’s a wonderful obituary! I was privileged to get to know Roy quite well when we both worked for the Economic Recovery Commission. He was a wise, thoughtful and greatly respected member of our team.

We have only known Roy and Heather for a few short years but it didn’t take long to see that whatever task he found to do, he did it well. He will definitely be missed in this neighbourhood.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Roy Myers’s. I worked at Ultramar in the early 80’s and Mr. Myer’s, as he was known, was always someone we all admired. I remember he championed the move from Elizabeth Ave. to Pippy Place, with the newly built Ultramar Building., and the pride we all felt with our new home. Can’t help but look back on those years fondly and with appreciation for the atmosphere of comradely created within the various departments. RIP.

Dave Gregory and I would often visit your Dad looking for help and guidance during the 1980’s for this project. He was always very supportive and through these Rodeos helped in developing safe driving practices in many new drivers. While we have lost contact over the years the memories of the good old days will remain. Thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

I am sorry fore the loss of my friend Roy . He suffered so much over the years, and never ever showed the pain he endured. I will miss Roy and our telephone calls.
In later years health issues kept us from getting together, his issues and mine. I can only say that Im so happy he is no longer suffering knowing he is now at peace.. You may be gone my. friend but will never be forgotten.
